"I didn't tell him much except that there was something we found that belonged to Enzo's master that needed taking care of," Michael said. A moment later, Edward apparated in to the middle of the street and saw them sitting at the cafe and walked over to them.
"Popi!" Giovanni got up and ran to Edward and clung to him, wrapping his arms around Edward and hugging him tightly.
"Giovanni!" Edward was stunned and he crouched to come face to face with him. "Where have you been! We've been looking all over for you!" The boy was quiet and stared that the cobblestones suddenly. "Giovanni," Edward prompted gently.
"Papa...is gone," he told Edward. "Enzo...I can't have him anymore....Nobody wants me...."
"Giovanni," Edward said, reaching into his pocket and giving him an orange flavored sugar stick. "If I had not wanted you, would I have looked for you? Would I have come? Would I still give you candy?" Giovanni had taken the sugar stick as Edward was talking. Now he looked up at him.
"Why do you want me?" he asked.
"Because I need an apprentice," Edward said. "I'm getting older too. I need someone to help me in my house like you helped Papa."
"I could do that, Popi. I could do that!" He nodded.
"I beleive you could. And Giovanni," he looked at him. "My hunting dog, Mira, had puppies. She's got too many to nurse. Someone will need to look after the puppies...."
"Puppies! Popi, could I have one?"
"That depends. Can you keep it in your room and take care of it?"
"Room? I have no room?"
"An apprentice needs his own room, doesn't he?" Edward asked. Giovanni slowly nodded. "Then you'll have to keep your puppy in your room and raise him or her."
"To be like Enzo! I can do that! I saw how Papa trained Enzo. I can do that."
"Its a lot of work."
"I can work. I can work hard."
"Yes. Yes you can. And its better than the workhouse, isn't it?"
His eyes narrowed at Edward. "Would I have to take a bath?"
"Maybe just once in awhile," Edward resisted the urge to laugh. "So what do you say?"
"Do you have food? Money?"
"Do I look like I go hungry?" Edward laughed out loud now. "Do I look poor to you?" Giovanni shook his head. "Then its settled. Come now. Let's go finish the lunch Michael has bought for you." He brought the boy back to the table and the waiter returned. Edward ordered just an espresso and pulled up a chair beside Giovanni.
"Thank you," Edward said to them. "You have no idea how hard we've been hunting for him. Giovanni didn't know he was supposed to come with us. He's going to be surrounded by more family than he can wrap his mind around."
"And yes, he does need a bath," Michael laughed.
"Well, maybe just this once," Edward laughed.
"Popi," Giovanni asked. "Can we get gelato?"
"Their cannoli here are much better," Edward said. Giovanni's mouth was watering too much to speak. He just nodded.
"I think this should go very well," Michael laughed. "If you dont' spoil the boy."
