Khaat knew Jess was tapping into Brian's inner strength--the parts of him that made Brian so special and prt of what made Khaat admire him so much. She watched Brian lead her a little deeper in the water--perhaps not as much as Jess might have wanted, but enough that the water rose around her by a few inches. It didn't take Khaat's seers abilities to know Jess was struggling with some new flashbacks about old traumas. Brian was already onto that, and he was addressing it the best way he knew how--by helping her move through the fear.
Brian was a great believer in not being crippled by fear but rather in moving through it. He understood fear, but he was determined on mastering it as best he could. And Khaat was glad that Jess was really trying to face hers.
It made her own thoughts drift to Rob and how she had been so afraid she could not live without him. Well, that fear was leaving slowly, she recognized. She knew she didn't have anything to take its place yet, and now she was having to cope with just utter emptiness and the feeling that she had no real purpose anymore. That, though, seemed silly. Rob had never really been there much even when they were getting along.
"Khaat," her father said very softly, interrupting her thoughts, "I know that look. You're thinking of Rob again. Let it go. Just enjoy tonight for what it is. There is nothing saying you have to have all the answers for all your questions right now. Give yourself time. It's a lot to take in and adjust to. Be patient. It'll work out. I promise."
"Yeah," she smiled at him, "I know. I stil sometimes miss him. That's all."
"That only makes you human, my dear," he took her hand supportively.
