In regards to the plot, we have been listening. But, in all honesty, much as we'd like everyone to be happy, Eli and I have some serious concerns. We've been working to compose a message, with much editing, to try to voice our mutual concerns. So, yeah, its long, but pull up a soda and read. We don't speak for anyone else, but since we have the same thoughts, consider this as coming mutually from both Eli and I.
Here it is:
Subplots.
You're out of your depth trying to do a site-wide plot whether you're willing to acknowledge it or not. Work with what we've got so far. We've got plague. I have the next plot in progress which I fully intend to run though I do not plan to elaborate on here as it is meant to be a surprise. Surprise plots are always nice. It works IC with the post-plague Wizarding World trying to cope with diminished numbers, revolts and the like. I'm tempted, also, to put food shortages in the mix but this will obviously before the new one is implemented.
I'm disinclined, though I am not denying it has a good structure, to allow a site plot to run that is eerily similar to the Grindy plot. It has the same underlying plotline as the Grindy plot did so there is no use claiming any differently. The make-up might be of a different shade and you might be using some different eye guff (for the lack of a better analogy) in the form of spies but the foundation is still the same. It’s totalitarian government whichever way you shake it and that has been done and it has been done far too recently for the members to be plunged back into it. Period. They hated it. They did. There’s no two ways about it. The novelty wore off before we’d even begun and it nearly cost us the site as a whole so we are not going to run it imminently.
Listen to me now: I am not saying we will not run it. What I am saying is that we’re not going to run it yet. There is a queue.
However, you are all far too optimistic about member interest, about activity and the like. Too optimistic to be able to run this successfully right off the bat as you assume you will. It is for that reason that I want you to compose several subplots to get an abundance of members involved. And it certainly doesn’t count if it’s all of you plus Red, myself, Madd – whoever. Doesn’t count. You clearly like the dystopia. Work with post-plague Wizarding World as your base line. I suggested food shortages – run with it.
I am well aware three out of the four of you have been admins in the past but the nature of the job is not as similar as you may recall it to be. Members have shuffled round somewhat and now there is a different predictability about them. You have to work assuming the worst then hope they’ll surprise you and give you the best.
But you four are keen, I’ll give you that – if not a little bit idealistic – so I’m asking you to run subplots. Run large but underlying ones. Move away from the totalitarian government for now. It will do you no favours by trying to press it into the subplots you design. I’m not saying you will ... just, fair warning.
I want proof you can run this, start to finish. I want three subplots out of you lot. Good ones. I want everyone involved in some small way or another. Or at least, members who’d you consider to “never be involved in plot.” Do that, then I want this totalitarian government plot redone and worked on. It’s got a half-decent foundation. Don’t take this like an attack on an idea. It’s not a bad idea. It’s a good idea but it’s a dodgy plot to go with. It’s not as stable as you think. Especially when we consider how the other one bombed. And no, it doesn’t matter how it’s run or how it’s dealt with. It’ll bomb again. I don’t want to force it on the members for a second time. This time, the site will end.
So, before I start getting too emo: this is the task for you. Don’t get the hump. It is a good idea. Please, I’m not trying to shoot you out of the sky or the like. I’m bringing you down slowly in a hot air balloon before you run away with yourselves.
Work on subplots. There’s no need to jump straight for the big guns. Start small, then work up to it. Let us deal with site-wide plottage. You can chip in, I’m not going to deny you this, but you need to walk before you can run, you know? Get the activity you insist you’ll get, get the good plot-substance you are determined to get. Do it in subplot, then we’ll talk about side-wide plot. Right off the bat...it’s too fast and you’re stepping on toes and crossing a line that ought not to be crossed. Don’t shoot me, alright? Just take my advice and start small. You’re not going to do the site, the staff or yourselves any favours if you jump in without practise and it bombs out.
