Robert decided to allow Brian and Edward get Khaat acquainted with Enzo, and he returned to the house. "You two are looking like this is a permanent thing," he laughed. "No, no, no. I figure just a few days at best. You watch. Her hearing will heal first, then the burns and then her sight will return last, but she will be back to herself within a few days. It'll be fine."
Khaat and Brian and Edward got a distance from the house, and Edward could feel Khaat tiring. "You need to stop and rest," He told her. "You haven't been taking care of yourself. Stop and rest. Do you think you and Enzo can get back to the house on your own?"
"If not, I"m here," Brian said.
"Yes, but you're just the backup plan. You need to let them do this on their own," Edward said. "I'm going back to the house while you rest a bit. We'll see how you do. If you do it well, I might head home and let you practice." He walked back to the house. Brian helped Khaat sit down on the grass with him, and Enzo sat tight against her side.
"Remus tried to reach me earlier apparently," she told him.
"I know. Your father told me," Brian said.
"Should I try to reach him?"
"If you think you have the energy," he said.
"Maybe," she said. He let her lay back with her head in his lap, and she allowed herself to go deep into a visionary state. It didn't take long before she saw Remus's hand reaching out for her in the darkness. She took his hand and he drew her into a clearing in a woods. It was the same place he usually met her on the other side of the veil.
"You tried to reach me?" she asked.
"The stone didn't betray you," he said. "James' blood lust must have been dangerously high. The stone was trying to protect you."
"So, it amps up its power in direct proportion to the threat."
"Well, it surely seems to," Remus said. "Tell me--why are you depresed?"
"Depressed?" she asked. "Maybe because I can't see? Its hard for a seer to not see. Maybe because between Gelding and Blood I havent had any peace in years. Maybe because this damned plague is killing people and I can't do anything to help...Maybe its because I'm tired. And I miss you. And there are times when I'd rather be here with you." He let her vent, his typical half smile on his face.
"Well," he sighed. "I do understand that, but..." he paused to let her prepare for his rebuttal. "Seers do not need eyes to see. Thats not how that works so thats a lame argument on me. And its temporary and you know it. Gelding needs to be stopped. He's just stupid. But Blood--he's got too much bloodlust now. He needs to die. He's lost his humanity. He's becoming a bigger threat the more he embraces the curse. You need to watch your step there. And everyone with you. You're tired because you've stopped taking care of yourself. Thats your own fault, and you know it. You know how to fix it. And you can miss me all you want, but the fact is, I'm right here. And this is the way it will be until your time comes to cross the veil yourself. Don't think there arent' times I'd rather be there with you too, but...It is what it is. Robert is right, you know. You do need some time off. You do need to take some time to enjoy that new family of yours. Have some fun. When is the last time you just had fun?"
"I have no idea" she said.
"Well, then?" he asked. "You surely don't think that life on this side is all depression and gruesome and doing nothing but hovering over you lot, do you?"
"I dont know."
"Well, it doesn't work like that. I can keep an eye on you and enjoy my afterlife too. I suggest you try to find a way to do the same...." She began to feel she was fading from him.
"No!..." she wanted to stay. He just laughed gently.
"Come back when you can stay a little longer--like when your energy is recharged," he smiled and waved. And then he was gone. And she was waking back up in the grass with Brian.
"Brian?" she called.
"You're back?" he asked.
"I..think so," she said.
