Remy was unsurprised as she posed her question to see a few stragglers coming across the lawn to the gamekeeper’s hut, one at a time. Their expressions ranged from embarrassed to tired to smug, the third of which was surprising, but only momentarily until the girl introduced herself. The first two had made no effort to introduce themselves, but they could in no way be fooled into thinking that their late arrival had gone unnoticed – Remy’s eyes fell heavily on them and she smirked in their direction before allowing her attention to be diverted by the smug girl who chose to speak up.
The girl was from Slytherin, evidenced by her robes, but the attire wasn’t altogether necessary for that deductive process. She was late, full of herself, and full of excuses. Her appearance was impeccable, not a hair out of place, and she carried herself as though someone had told her she was very important. All of this would have been enough, but the last name was what really put the nail in the coffin. A family name, to be sure, and she bore a striking resemblance to her father, who had taken a liking to Remy immediately – who wouldn’t with a wife like Pansy? – and the… arrangement Remy had with him had proven quite useful in forming early alliances with the Death Eaters. Having processed all of this in a matter of seconds, Remy returned the girl’s smirk as she completed her inspection of the girl, watching another student come dashing over the grass to take her place in the class, looking far more winded than Miss Nott.
“I’m glad you all could join us,” Remy said in an overly-pleasant way, intentional in her choice of tone to suggest that she had noticed their lateness but was letting it go, “Miss Nott, thank you for the introduction, and for your contribution to the class. As to the rest of you, introductions would be appreciated, starting with mine, I am sure: I am the new Care of Magical Creatures Professor, as you’ve probably deduced, and you may call me Remy.”
It was slightly disappointing that most of the new arrivals were female, taking away some of Remy’s ability to completely control the situation. Women were more difficult to have power over than men, mostly because they did not respond to the same stimuli. Also, they threw a wrench in Remy’s usual interactions with men, because they had a tendency to judge her methods. But that would be no problem for now, as Remy pushed her disappointment to the back of her mind and quickly adjusted her plan of attack to suit the new situation. Remy was a chameleon, both out of necessity and choice, and it had served her well.
“As to your answer, Adelyn,” Remy said, returning her attention to the brunette with an god-complex, intentionally giving the girl the attention she wanted. People who were self-important liked to feel that others knew their worth as well, and with all the powerful men in Remy’s repertoire, she was well practiced in the act of showering with attention, “You have brought us to the subject of today’s lesson. Chameleon Ghouls, as you suggested, are shape-shifting creatures that disguise themselves as everyday objects.”
“There is a very specific way of detecting chameleon ghouls,” Remy continued, addressing the class as a whole now, “and that is by examining closely their appearance. Chameleon ghouls only shift themselves into perfect items, that is there are no visible deformations. A chair with no wear or tear, a suit of armor without a single smudge or nick. These often appear out of place in the environment which surrounds them because that level of perfection can rarely be attained in common objects.”
“If you suspect there is a chameleon ghoul disguising itself, there is a simple spell which will force it to show itself. The incantation is ostendo mihi with a sharp jabbing motion in the direction of the suspected ghoul. This spell will force the ghoul back into its native state, at which point you can dispose of it by employing the simple spell Diffindo.”
“Now, if there are no questions on that,” Remy said, looking to the faces of her students for evidence of inquiry, “I will ask you all to find a partner for today’s task.”
