Metamorphamgus: Metamorphmagi are common in Ruby’s family. Her grandfather was one as was his mother before him. And her mother before her. And her father before her. And.... well, you get the point.
Ruby’s mother, Heather Donagher, inherited the metamorphmagus gene from her father. Since she was also a Squib, being a metamorphmagus was pretty helpful. Her twin sister didn’t inherit the gene though but she died when she was only 2 so no one actually talks about her. Heather loved being a metamorphmagus and was constantly changing her appearance.
When Ruby was born and her eyes wouldn’t settle on one colour, Heather was thrilled. She knew Ruby was a metamorphmagus and started teaching her from an early age how to use her abilities. At the time, Ruby’s father, Carlo, thought it was very amusing to watch both his wife and daughter change their appearances at will and he also encouraged Ruby to master her ability.
By the time Ruby was 6, she was an accomplished metamorphmagus and could imitate anyone’s appearance just by willing herself to do so. Her parents were proud of her and her grandfather was very happy to see that his only granddaughter was following in his footsteps. Unfortunately, he died that year and Heather was so devastated that she became unable to properly change her appearance anymore. She had trouble using her ability and could not hold any shape for more than a few seconds. Over time, she stopped trying and held her original appearance instead.
However, she still encouraged Ruby to practise and made sure she didn’t stop using her ability. With her mother’s help, and her father’s encouragement, Ruby improved more and more, until she eventually had the morphing ability of a person 5 times her age. She used her ability to play pranks on people, including her parents, but most people just thought it was cute. At school, she avoided getting in trouble for things numerous times and even though teacher’s knew about her being a metamorphmagus, they didn’t comment that much since she only used her ability for harmless things.
When Heather died 6 years later, Ruby became depressed and withdrawn, but she carried on morphing and practising in memory of her mother. She was naturally extremely pretty and so she mostly used her ability to take on comical appearances. Her father, who hadn’t interacted much with her before, very rarely talked to her since she reminded him of her mother too much, and when he married her step-mother Serena 3 months later, Ruby became practically non-existent. Serena was always trying to get rid of Ruby but though Carlo was not particularly fond of his daughter he still had a soft spot for her and avoided the subject as he always felt guilty when he looked at her, being reminded of Heather whenever he looked at her.
Ruby does not morph that much nowadays, but she occasionally uses her ability to her advantage. Most people never notice that she is a metamorphmagus until they see her very angry, sad or happy. This is because when she is feeling extreme emotions, Ruby’s eyes change colour according to her mood. She thinks it’s pretty cool and is very proud of what she is. She has yet to test her ability in Hogwarts though.
