Fenrir came through the trees, dressed a little warmer tonight because the trees generally kept out the summer sun, and it made it colder in the deep woods at night. He had the same dark duster coat that he had had during the second war, but nowadays it looked more threadbare and old. Still, it seemed to service him well.
"So, tell me how this happened," Fenrir said, wanting to know how it had come about that there were new werewolves and that Lupin's people weren't just blindly killing them. They were going to give them to him. He sat down on a log opposite Jack and he listened.
"James has gotten entirely out of hand. The fact that you're willing to let him live instead of just killing him speaks well for you and well for Lupin. Lupin has more than sufficient justification even by our laws, to want to kill me and James both. But, clearly he hasn't seen fit to do that. Donohue has always had a reputation, even in our kind, of leaving most werewolves alone. He has always only eliminated those who present a significant threat to his kind. If I were a younger man, I would not trust any of you any farther than I could spit you.
"However," he said. "seeing that Lupin's pack does not follow typical human behavior, I could be persuaded to take a chance to come with you. So, let me just get this straight. You had a battle with James and this new pack while they were under his control, and you have dead werewolves on the ground. But, no additional deaths since you captured James, correct?" He was trying to get straight about the fact that he would expect to see dead werewolves."
"And I can bring a pack member with me? Alright, we'll travel with you." He whistled and got a sturdy younger male werewolf that responded to the whistle, while a third stood off in the shadows. "You're with me," he told the one. Then he looked at the one in the shadows. "If I do not return, move the pack to the alternate location." The one in the shadows nodded.
"We're ready," Fenrir told Jack, as Fenrir's traveling companion moved to stand beside Fenrir.
