James cast them an amused smile. He'd accomplished what he wanted.
"Bye, Jackie Boy," he laughed, leaving in a swirl of black smoke.
As Brian saw them bringing Abbey back, he ran up to them and took Abbey from them, hugging her tightly. "Thank you," he told them gratefully. He kissed the child's cheek, and Abbey slowly curled her head into Brian's neck, hiding her face.
"I hate doggies," she said finally in a whisper.
"Yeah," he said, kissing her. "I know. And that's okay. You're safe now. Let's go in the house." He knew he couldn't stay with her as long as there were 'doggies" on the property. He carried her towards the house, and Marcus met them outside the back living room door.
"I'll take her," Marcus said, taking her. Abbey smelled Marcus's after shave, and it finally got the smell of James out of her nose. Marcus had scents she remembered, smells that were safe. She finally began to cry. Brian was relieved. He turned and headed back out to the yard, his anger renewed now that Abbey was safe.
"Its time to take out the trash," he said, determined to get the remaining beasts out of his yard.
