It didn't take Brian more than a moment to realize that without him, she was going to sink because, with only one arm, she couldn't swim. It was a detail he'd overlooked. Still, he'd gotten her this far, and he believed if he pasted himself to her, it would all go well. Just a bit of diving for fun. Maybe it would ease some of her insecurities about feeling so useless and impaired.
With their dive lights, he took her down to see some of the rock formations and ruins. There were schools of all sorts of fish everywhere and all sorts of underwater life. It was always fascinating.
But something brushed up against her almost right away. She turned away from Brian, alarmed, trying to see what had gotten so close. She'd only looked away for a few seconds.
But she felt a sharp jerk on her arm. She turned back to see Brian being yanked away from her somehow. In the turbulence, she couldn't see clearly. Eerie blue green lights shot up through the dark waters, and she found herself clinging to Brian by his severed air hose. She panicked. She pulled herself closer to him and found that he was caught, but what the heck was it?
He was without air. He had the tank but the air was escaping wildly. He was caught behind bars of blue green light. A trap. Some sort of a trap. He fired wandless magic but the spell didn't fire. Nothing happened. He tried to escape but the bars sent him a shock, and knocked him down to the rocky floor beneath him.
She drew her wand and fired, but it merely absorbed her spell and had no effect. They both began looking towards the top and bottom of the trap but it was no use. And he was running out of air fast. She tried to pass her mask through the bars but it didn't fit.
He gripped her fingers tightly to get her to look at him. It had struck him. This was a magical trap and they were out of time. He looked at her, wanting to say a lifetime of things in a moment without words. She wasn't willing to stop fighting, unwilling to let him go. But he was clearly in trouble, out of air, unable to breathe.
Up on the deck, Marcus had finished unpacking for Khaat and Brian and came back up. He looked for her but didn't find her. Surely they hadn't actually been foolish enough to go diving, were they? The more he looked for her, the more dread came over him.
"Where is she?" he demanded, dreading that he'd let anyone talk him out of being away from her for a moment.
