Flying Lesson 1 - Beginners Empty Flying Lesson 1 - Beginners

Post by Jaquellene Jack Dyllan Wed Sep 04, 2013 1:29 am

Jack could very vividly remember her first Quidditch class. She had thought it spectacular but had, in hind sight, found it very dull. She had hardly learned a thing that first day, and wished her professor had been more willing to involve some risks. So, Jack had made it so that risks could be taken. She had found an old muggle inflatable machine and had transfigured the bouncy castle into a large slab, forty feet by forty feet. In the center was a wooden platform that she and the class would begin on. An enchantment prevented any child from flying farther than the reach of the inflatable, and Jack (being on the platform) could prevent any injury there.

She would get at least one kid in the air today.

She knew not to hope for much. First years would learn to summon their broom, and learn to mount their broom, and learn to hover. Perhaps one would manage to hover over the inflatable for some amount of time. There would be several tumbles and falls, but the inflatable would take the fear out of falling, she hoped.

The first years began to approach, but seemed hesitant to get onto the inflatable. She waved a hand. "Come on up to the platform! Grab a broom and space yourself out. Everyone say your name when you get up here too, so I don't have to call you Things 1 and 2 and so forth."

Flying Lesson 1 - Beginners Empty Re: Flying Lesson 1 - Beginners

All that Gabriel could hear as she ran out of the stone corridors of Hogwarts was her own panting breath. There was one thought on her mind. To not be late to her first class of the day.
She had been at Hogwarts for a couple weeks and almost knew where all her classes were. Almost.

As Gabby caught up to the other students that were taking the flying class as well she recognized a few from in the hallways, but most of them were new faces. The strange thing was that the teacher looked oddly familiar. Once Gabby was in front of the teacher she exasperatedly said, "Gabriel Silverwood!," She eyed the teacher, looking her over and then it clicked. Slowly, the memory entered Gabby's mind and she gaped, but quickly closed her mouth. The flying instructor was the same person who owned Weasley's Wizard Wheezes! That thought slowed Gabby's heart a little knowing that at least the teacher wasn't a total stranger.

Flying Lesson 1 - Beginners Empty Re: Flying Lesson 1 - Beginners

Post by Henry Yewbeam Sat Oct 12, 2013 11:15 pm

Annabelle was excited. She'd woken up exceptionally early, more early than usual. Not that waking early in her Slytherin dormitory was out of the ordinary, Annabelle was a morning person and didn't the other girls know it.

She wasn't the sort of girl to sleep all morning on a weekend she wanted to get up, make the most of the time she had - after all, time really was little. Of course Annabelle hadn't always been like this, she'd once slept in until three o clock in the afternoon before her Grandma had died... Before her Grandma had died.

The death of Ariana Carrow had changed Annabelle. Not drastically, just slightly. She was still outgoing, adventurous, somewhat troublesome and always enjoyed a gossip. Although the death of her Grandmother had made her realise time is precious. That death is inevitable and that the thought of it scares the magic out of her. She's brave, for a Slytherin she's incredibly brave, so brave the sorting hat thought about sorting her into Gryffindor for a moment. In the end, however, it had cried 'SLYTHERIN!'

Slytherin had served her well. Annabelle had only been part of the house for a month but already she'd made friends, some nicer than the friends she'd had back in France before her Grandma's death, but mostly not. Not that this information could account for anything, they'd only known each other for a month. There had seven years to go, and who knows what could happen in that time.

Marching across the pitch the Slytherin noticed an inflatable box, thing? It reminded her of a muggle bouncy castle that the French muggle's had once had at a birthday party.

Annabelle had grew up in France. During the second wizard war Ariana Carrow had fell pregnant and fled to France to avoid the discrimination from her brother and sister. Not that Annabelle was aware of this, Ariana had protected her grandaughter's sweet ears from this fact.

In fact, if it wasn't for Ariana's passing Annabelle would be at Beauxbatons, she was all set to go their, after all that's where her Mother had attended. Unfortunately Abigail Carrow had taken her daughter Annabelle to Britain after her Mother's funeral to escape the place that felt so dark without the Mother, Grandmother and their friend.

It helped Annabelle. Not having to be where her Grandmother had died, it allowed her not to dwell as much. Yet, it still had changed her daughter - well, it would be odd if it hadn't considering how close the pair were.

Whilst Abigail worked Ariana taught Annabelle how to read, write, cook, brew potions (the later of which Annabelle was absolutely awful at so stayed away from) and how to fly. Annabelle was in her element. This was the class she was looking forward to, the class that would bring her the joy she'd felt with her Grandmother hovering around a French field not far from their cottage.

Annabelle was by no means a phenomenal flier but she was good for a first year. She could summon the broom, mount the broom and hover - move and hover too. There was just once thing, she'd never manage to go higher than a hover without falling, perhaps that came with practice and there had been limited practice due to people possibly seeing them. Ariana had made sure they never went higher than a hover, it would simply look like they were holding sticks from afar that way.

Grasping a broomstick, it's twigs sticking out at odd angles and the handle slightly chipped, Annabelle made her way to the Professor. 'I'm Annabelle.' She greeted with an eager smile as she held the old broom with some sort of respect. Today was the day she would get to fly (hopefully). Her Grandmother wasn't here to finish the lesson but hopefully she'd be watching over. Or at least Annabelle liked to think so.

Taking a position besides a girl in Ravenclaw robes Annabelle laid her broom besides her and beamed at the girl. 'Hi, my names Annabelle!' She loved to meet people. 'Have you done any flying before?'

Flying Lesson 1 - Beginners Empty Re: Flying Lesson 1 - Beginners

Gabby heard a voice behind her, instantly picking out the cheerfulness in this person's voice. She turned slightly and offered a slight smile, not sure what to think. She hadn't talked to many people in her short time that she had been at Hogwarts, but the few people she did talk to didn't offer much conversation or any real invitation for a friendship.

Sighing slightly Gabriel knew decided that to think negatively was to use a wasted opportunity. Instead of doing what her mind told her to do, she just ran with it. Slowly, Gabriel shook her head, her eyes darting to the broom sticks beside them and then back up at the girl. It was in that moment of silence that Gabby realized just how nerve racking flying seemed. Determined not to show her fears she put on a brave face and replied, keeping her head high, "Have you?,"

Quickly her eyes widened and she added quickly, "Oh! My name is Gabby, it's nice to meet you,"

Flying Lesson 1 - Beginners Empty Re: Flying Lesson 1 - Beginners

Annabelle noted that Gabriel hadn't flew before and how nervous she seemed about the prospect of riding the broomsticks. For a dare devil like Annabelle she'd never been nervous, never had the anxiety nor had she been at all bothered about the risks of falling.

In all fairness Annabelle hadn't flew extremely high, not because she was scared but because her Grandma had always restricted her in case a nearby muggle saw. The corn fields of Souther France were rather tall, giving them the ability to hover and fly rather low but height was a big no no.

'I've flew with my Grandma,' Annabelle started, a look of nostalgic happiness in her eyes. 'We used to fly around 'ze corn fields all the time. We'd never full zu high though because of the muggles. It's so fun.' Annabelle reeled off the tip of her tongue, a slight french twist to her voice in parts.

In spite of her Grandma's recent passing the Slytherin still aimed to be optimistic. It was who she was, a bundle of joy. She never bothered too much about getting into trouble and was always up for an adventure. Who cares if she was out of bounds? That was another thing about Annabelle: she was too curious. When she wanted to know something there was no stopping her. She'd do whatever it takes, perhaps it was this reason why she'd been sorted into Slytherin. Her ambition had the slight edge to the bold, Gryffindor inside of her.

'Nice to meet you to!' Annabelle exclaimed holding out a hand for Gabby to take.

'Do you reckon we'll get to fly high today? I'm so looking forward to doing that.' Annabelle questioned, looking up slightly at the sky, a slight breeze fluttering the strands of hair that had escaped the main lock that trailed down her back.

Flying Lesson 1 - Beginners Empty Re: Flying Lesson 1 - Beginners

Jack looked about at the youngsters, all so eager to fly. It was almost enough to warm her heart, but she wanted to get these kids flying so they could utilize the skill for safety, not for fun. Of course, she enjoyed her sport very much, but it did not mean she could not teach it seriously. More than she wanted these kids to enjoy flying, she wanted them to live to enjoy flying. Perhaps she was a bit paranoid, but so far, her way of living had kept her alive this long.

"Alright, young'uns," Jack said, pulled out her own broom, her voice booming over everyone. "So, I'm going to be teaching you the basics. No fancy stuff - that'll come, I promise. If you want to be good, you have to start right, not fast. So everyone approach your broom, like so-" she set it down and stood next to it, "-put a hand out-" she did so "and command it to yourself. Up!" Her broom immediately rose into her grip. "It may take a few tries, but that's fine. Say it with authority. Some of these school brooms are a bit pesky."

Flying Lesson 1 - Beginners Empty Re: Flying Lesson 1 - Beginners

Post by Gabriel Silverwood Wed Oct 23, 2013 7:11 pm

Gabriel listened, posture erect, hands folded neatly in her small lap. As she listened she took notes on how Annabelle talked and how her hands motioned when she repositioned herself. It was all quite intriguing to study human nature because everyone was different and interesting in their own way and Gabby was determined to find out what Annabelle was like. For better or for worse.

When Annabelle stopped speaking, Gabby took a mental note in her head about the accent she had heard. It instantly stuck out among all the other things going through her head. French. The accent is French.

Responding the previous question asked with a slight twist to her smile she said, "I don't know about you, but I sure hope not. I don't really want to risk getting a broken arm. There's still so much I haven't seen of this school. I feel like I need to know every inch of it," Gabby knew she was rambling, but her excitement of this school year couldn't quite keep itself invisible. Before Gabby could get another word in she saw the instructor clear her throat and taking that as a signal for that the lesson was going to start she hastily took Annabelle's offered hand, gave it a firm yet delicate shake and then looked forward with eager eyes.

Doing as she instructed, Gabby raised her hand over the broom, the wind tickling the back of her neck and making her hands feel as though they've been dipped in ice cold water. Honestly, she didn't believe the broom would come up the first time she summoned it. Her hypothesis was right. With a small voice she said, "Up."
Nothing happened.
Before entering into a complete stage of panic that she couldn't get the broom to fly up into her hand the first time she took a deep breath.
Closed her eyes.
And commanded in a firm voice, "Up!,"
This time her face twisted itself into a face of shock.
The broom that had been on the ground a couple seconds before was now in her hands in only moments. Her breath caught in her throat as she erupted into a fit of smiles. Her thoughts pleasently soared through the sky with her confidence, now if I only could get people off the ground! Now that would be something I could use!
