Kate picked up on Jess's feelings. "You were only asked to protect the children, Jess. And, if necessary, to give Michael time."
"Not so true," Angus said. "If you think for one minute that Brian wouldn't throw himself between anyone or anything and her, even if he knew it was suicidal, you're sadly mistaken. You won't just have to deal with Robert, even if the rest of us are on board with this. You also have to contend with Brian."
"Some sort of overgrown werewolf, most likely not alone, an out of control husband, and a half crazed father," Michael sighed, getting out his cigarette case and lighting up. "Seems like reasonable odds to me. Not a problem. Just the everyday Lupin crisis, is it not?"
"Michael," Kate frowned.
"I can't do this, Kate," Michael said. "I can put up with all sorts of lunacy, but this one is beyond me. What the hell do you think Remus would be thinking if he were here?" Kate got up and went to him and hugged him.
"He wouldn't approve either," Kate said quietly. "I know that...."
"She won't tell Brian either, will she?"
"No, not the full extent. She hasn't even told us all of it," Kate said. "There's something else she's holding out. She's trying to protect us from fear. Don't forget she was trained from as long as she can remember to think and behave like a true Gryffindor. To be a fighter. She values others above herself. Gryffindors will toss themselves under a speeding train if thats what it takes to protect the ones they love. It just is who she is. And she loves all of us. If she could face this whatever-it-is alone without us, she would. But she needs us. She needs to know that her children and her father will be safe, and she's putting their lives into our hands. Its the highest form of love she knows--to be wiling to give it all up for the people she loves."
It wasn't her plan to tell Brian. She wanted to spare him, but he knew her. Of anyone he had ever known in his life, he knew her. He didn't give her the option of keeping everything secret. But she chose to not tell him everything. She told him what she had told them. Brian's mind knew there was more. He mentally filled in the rest to an extent. It was extremely dangerous, dangerous enough that she was willing to rely on a former enemy to protect her if it shielded her loved ones.
And it was Brian who decided to tell Robert enough to not leave him entirely in the dark. He simply went downstairs and met Robert as he finished his shower in the locker room downstairs. Brian told him that Escobar had come, not to harm Khaat but to protect her because he believed that the werewolves were bringing back some sort of threat that Escobar believed was legitimately exceptionally dangerous. Robert immediately knew that there was more, but he also realized he wasn't going to get it. He walked upstairs and saw everyone gathered, the tension in the room enough to be cut with a knife.
"I know enough," Robert told them quietly. "I surely don't know the full situation, but I do know enough for now. We will operate as we always do. We will fight. We will protect ourselves. And for now, we will go into a full lockdown. Steven and Jim, cast age lines around all the doors and windows and floos so that the children cannot leave without one of us. I do not want our wandering toddlers to wander outside without us. Jack, keep your eyes peeled. I want to know when the werewolves shoiw up. Ladies, do not leave the children alone for 30 seconds. Angus and Michael, prepare nonperishable rations so we can eat quickly if we have to. I have assigned Brian to make sure Khaat doesn't leave his sight. If you'll excuse me, I have a couple ideas of my own. I need to go to my potions lab while there is still time." He went upstairs quickly.
