"It'll be okay Chase.. Jack is your friend.. Calvin is taking care of the kids.. I'm here... I'm alive!" Chase said softly to herself as she walked across the grounds. The kids were okay.. Calvin was taking care of them.. along with Reid.. who, not to any offense of Cavlin, she trusted slightly more. Thierry was probably suffering a bit, as Calvin was more of a kid like Fauve then a kid like him. He was very smart, but he would understand.. he would know why for now, she had to leave them, and then they'd be somewhere she could trust, and stay close to them, protect them from their father.

Chase sat down on the ground below a tree and stared out at the lake. She knew the Krums were probably freaking out. Probably hating her, Viktor would never look at her the same.. never understand.. never know what it felt like. He had been her savior.. he had SAVED her from either killing herself, or being killed.. she had been so happy, even with all the rumors, all of the crap that was spread around, told to her without them realizing her connection. He had wanted to keep her away from eyes.. and now that she thought of it, she understood why. He didn't want everyone else to know she even existed.. why?

Because then no one would question him when he went off and did something with someone else! If they didn't know he had a wife at home, who was absolutely devoted to him, why would anyone question it if he was with a different girl every other day? It made sense now that she thought of it, but at the time it had been great. Knowing he loved her so much that he wanted her to himself.. even if it did make her feel a bit.. stifled. She had resigned herself to being the loving wife and mother. And then she had walked in... found out that he just didn't give a rat's ass about her.

No.. he did, but he didn't know how to show it, and it's true what they say.. how can you know someone else.. if you don't even know yourself.. and obviously he hadn't known himself.. or loved himself enough to realize he was above all the sex, and drugs, and whatever else he did! He didn't know anything about himself.. but still.. the way he had reacted when she was getting her things together.. how sad he was.. the look in his eyes, knowing he was losing her, even though he had said he wouldn't live without her.. obviously he could.. and he would, and he would never change.

He would never change.

They’d been looking for Chase for what felt like years now. None of the Angelovas wanted to turn around and admit to Viktor that they couldn’t find her or the children. So, they’d stayed out there. They’d split off into different groups, hoping to make the search quicker and more efficient. They needed to find her. This wasn’t a game for any of them. No one wanted to find out what their punishment was. Gavrilo doubted Viktor wanted to see any of them unless they had, at the very least, the girl. He cared more about the location of Elijah’s children and frankly, so did everyone else. They could only assume she’d taken them with her and no one wanted to think about the alternatives to that. They needed to be found – all of them. That was what mattered and until they were found, they weren’t going to be able to go home. Gavrilo had come to terms with that fact; his cousins, however, had not.

    ‘Why is this important again?’

James called from further back. Gavrilo didn’t spare him a glance and pressed on through the undergrowth of the Forbidden Forest. How they got there, Gavrilo did not know but it was through there that they’d get onto Hogwarts grounds without tripping the wards. James was Elijah’s age and he seemed to have inherited the Krum ‘womanizing’ gene. They’d all seen his little black book and Edward and Charles (James’ older brother’s) were willing to bet that it was a bigger book than Elijah’s. There were a lot of eligible young women in Durmstrang – many of whom that were just begging to be deflowered. From what Gavrilo had been told, James could only do but indulge the young ladies. James was not nearly as charming as his legitimate counterpart though. He couldn’t make people fall in love with him; he was just a twat. And it was for that reason that Gavrilo ignored him and continued walking if only to stop himself from hexing the little sod.

‘It’s important because we can’t go unless we’ve got her, prick.’ Edward retorted in Gavrilo’s place and the latter was pleased to hear the clap of Charles’ hand against the back of James’ head.

Smirking, Gavrilo stepped over a large root that clamped one of the towering sycamores into the ground. After the protruding root there was a lot more flat ground so Gavrilo managed to pick up pace. He could see the opening of the bracken not too far away and the prospect of leaving the forest made him pick up further pace. He wanted out of the disgusting, intolerable place. He also wanted to get out of the presence of Charles, Edward and James. He liked them well enough but not enough to want to stay with them longer than necessary. They’d all retained the Krum surname and so there was a special place in the hearts of every legitimate Krum for them. It was that locker of hatred in which they all had their own special shelf.

    ‘Gavrilo! Come back!’

He ignored the shout from behind and continued on, anticipation flooding through him as he neared the light of the open. Gavrilo pushed the branches out of the way and emerged, his shoes sinking into the emerald blades of grass. He exhaled gently and reached up to take the grey beanie off of his head. He shook his hair out and ran his hand through the front of it. He let his fingers fall and he winced instinctively as they grazed the deep, scar channels. He tore his hand away and shook his head before dragging his eyes across the lush green expanse that was the Hogwarts grounds. His eyes found the person they’d all been searching for and he felt a great weight lift off of his chest. Gavrilo knew he wouldn’t have long. He didn’t doubt that someone would come out into the grounds with time. He didn’t want to be found particularly – by anyone.

Gavrilo stomped up one of the embankments and stumbled down the other side towards the lake. Looking up at the castle again he decided he much preferred Durmstrang. There was something powerful there. It exuded dark power. Hogwarts just made you feel welcome. At present though, Gavrilo wasn’t really feeling that. He was anxious, skittish and wanted to get Chase out as soon as possible. He knew that she wouldn’t want to leave. That didn’t mean he wouldn’t give it a good go though.

Taking his bag off of his shoulder, Gavrilo dumped the backpack on the floor. He then proceeded to lower himself to the floor, carefully so as not further irritate his tired body. Gavrilo looked at Chase and couldn’t quite keep a frown off of his features as he spoke to her.

“You have a lot of people worried about you. I’m Gavrilo by the way. I am one of Elijah’s...cousins I suppose.”
Gavrilo sighed and contemplated what to say next before finally adding, “Where are Fauve and Thierry? Obviously you took them with you but I doubt they’re at Hogwarts. Viktor is desperate to know where they are. We can’t go home without their locations or you in hand I really doubt you want to go back there.”

Chase heard feet beside her, and glanced over to see one of the boys who had been there when she had had Kitty. Chase frowned and then turned to look out at the lake again. They had found her at last, and to be perfectly honest.. it had taken them long enough.. and it seemed they hadn't exactly done it very legally either... seeing as he had emerged from the Forbidden Forest, meaning they weren't supposed to be there.

The boy had an extremely strong Bulgarian accent, and it took her a moment to understand what he had said. When she had deciphered it, she turned to look at him with a small amount of sadness in her eyes. "I'm afraid your efforts are wasted, for you aren't getting either of those things." She said lightly and turned to look at the lake again, pulling her knees to her chest. "I want nothing to do with your family anymore.. and I think Fauve and Thierry would do much better growing up away from all of.. that." She said, her voice staying in a single monotone, as though she had completely given up and was just a shell of her former self.

"The Krum's are selfish.. and cruel, and only think of themselves.. how is that a good environment for children to grow up in? Look how Elijah turned out.. I will not have those innocent young children turn out like that.. If he can't take care of himself and his immediate family, he should not have taken in children he knows nothing about.. I'm rich, I can pay for them.. they will go to school, be loved, cared for, and have family and friends.. they will grow up happy. So I am sorry.. you will not find out where they are.. and I have no intention of going anywhere." She said and went silent finally.

It was amazing how much Viktor would hate her after this, the entire Krum family, they would never look at her again, even if she somehow made up with Elijah, which at this point was impossible, and she would never be able to love him again. "Blame it on motherly instincts.. but I took them because they needed to be taken." She said softly, and rested her forehead on her knees, unmoving after that, only listening for his response.

Her eyebrows came down into a frown and immediately, Gavrilo realised he was going to have some trouble convincing her to come back. He didn’t know where the family was. What he’d heard before he’d left had been brief. Elijah had been found by his Aunt Arlene who had called her husband who had called Viktor who had called Stefan who had told their cousins and from there it progressed. Soon every Krum knew and the Angelovas found themselves straddled with a task that would gain them the respect they so badly wanted – or so they thought. This was a chance to impress them, though, and Gavrilo wasn’t going to pass it up. He couldn’t afford to. She was right there.

Gavrilo couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Pureblood girls clambered over each other to try and get a place of the Krum family tree. And she...she seemed to hate them. Gavrilo could only lamely stare at her, his mind having failed his lips. What was his retort for something like this? It was ridiculous! How could she say that? Well, Gavrilo knew how. He harboured a similar distaste for all of them but he didn’t voice those opinions. If it wouldn’t have been too bold, he would have covered his mouth but she was headstrong and he doubted very highly that something like that would go over well. He knew that he couldn’t do anything to convince her, not if she’d already made her decision, but he could only do but try. He had to. He couldn’t go home without her. He’d be fried.

Pinching the bridge of his nose, Gavrilo let out a shaky sigh. He knew he’d have to defend Elijah, even if he truly didn’t want to. He’d do it begrudgingly. He knew that somehow he’d have to prove to her that Elijah was a better alternative for the children than their own mother’s. Gavrilo had overheard many a story about Vivienne and Giselle. Both were thoroughly unpleasant and although the latter was slightly nicer, the former was like hell in human form. Gavrilo knew how much Elijah hated the woman and he knew that despite the fact that Elijah was a nutcase that clearly couldn’t see how good he’d had it...he loved his children. He loved his children more than anything in the world. He put more energy into them than anything else. Gavrilo had only seen him without them a handful of times and he knew how lost Elijah was. It was as if something was missing, something that should have been by his side – like the cigarette belonged in one hand and the wine glass in the other.

“He loves them!” Gavrilo spluttered finally. “They all love them. Right now, you must like the Krums as much as I do but there is a difference between you and me. They can stand you. They would prefer to see me and my family dead and they would gladly dance on our graves. If you do not come with me then they won’t even bother putting me in a coffin. They will just chop me up and put me in a shoe box. I know how you feel about them. You have made your feelings care but Elijah loves you. That was always apparent. You of all people should know that those flings never mean anything! He does that because...well I do not know why he does but I am sure there is a reason. You cannot take those children away from him. He has not had a happy life, Chase. He cannot...”

Gavrilo broke off and pursed his lips. He wondered why he even cared. He didn’t though. He didn’t care about Elijah or his children. He didn’t even care about the family as a whole. This was a job for him. This was a job that would have positive repercussions – or at least he hoped it would. He only needed to bring her to Viktor and let them battle it out. Gavrilo was sure they only really cared who had the children though. They wouldn’t necessarily go and see them, especially if they were happy, but they’d definitely keep tabs on them. That would be another job for Gavrilo no doubt.

“Chase, please. Elijah was always a better option for them than their mothers were. He has his faults but we all do! Above all he loved those children. Above everything he loved them! If you do not let him near them then that is fine but you cannot keep them from everyone. None of us have any claim to them. No one does – not even Elijah. I need to know where they are. I cannot go home if I do not. I cannot go through the doors of that hospital and tell Viktor that I do not know where his grandchildren are. He’ll incinerate me and I will be in the morgue with that woman they found him with. Just...please...humour me. Please. This cannot happen like this. This has to be...you have to cooperate. I have spent far too much time looking for you. I refuse to walk away without what I need and I do not care whether I have to drag you kicking and screaming. I am tired and I am hungry. I want to go home to my family so can we make this painless? Just tell me where they are. If all else fails I will use Leglimens. I do not want to so cooperate. Please.”

Chase looked at the boy for a long moment, before her eyes traveled blankly back over to the lake. The Krums hated his family.. why would he be here then? He hated the Krums.. and they hated him.. so why would he be working for them? It didn't make sense. He spoke of how Elijah loved the kids, he loved them, and needed them, the flings didn't matter, but they did overall... the flings mattered a great deal.. his cigarettes, the wine, it was all corrupting, maybe he didn't realize it now.. but what he did influences a child.. children will listen.. if you tell them something, they watch when you do things, and it makes impressions. Sometimes the kid is smarter then the impressions made, but children to listen, and they watch...

"I can tell you hate the Krums, so why do you help them? Why struggle to be apart of a family that would put you in a shoebox just for not bringing me back to them? But at the same time.. why would they send someone who is obviously not that important to them.. on a task such as finding out where these kids are?" She asked lightly, her gaze drifting back over to him, and she held his gaze steadily. "He has not had a great life.. do you realize that there are people a lot worse off then us? This struggle is nothing compared to other things! We have money, power... friends and family to love.. well... some of us do... and yet we can't look at the big picture! He has not had a hard life! He has been a spoiled child with everything he has ever wanted. Maybe he didn't have a mother or father figure in his life, maybe he didn't get the care he needed, maybe he watched people die, but there are a lot worse things out there!" She said and found she had stood up in a sudden burst of anger.

"So do I really give a damn about this man? No! He still has family to love, he has relatives, if he wants children, why doesn't he go find one of the model's he's screwed and take one of their kids! He doesn't need anyone but himself! He needs to learn that there are some things you CAN"T get in life!" Chase didn't know where this anger had come from, but she knew that it wasn't going to stop any time soon, if it did, it would only be because it had dissolved into tears.

But something he said stopped her, something that he said made her pause, and she stared at him for a long time in silence, before she was able to speak again. "What do you mean that woman they found him with?" She whispered. "Why would she be in a morgue?" She asked softly, her eyes locked on the boy. Chase stared at him for a long moment, her eyes like steel as she watched him. "What happened to the woman Gavrilo?" She asked softly, still standing, her hands in fists at her sides.

Gavrilo knew he could never gain the family’s respect. He knew when he’d fall in love, he’d be denied her. He knew he’d be given someone he didn’t like (or want) and be expected not to reproduce with her. That was the idea wasn’t it? So far they one-upped the Krums and had managed to fall in love with the wives they’d been given. Then they’d have as many children as she could bear. There was a problem in doing this though. Gavrilo knew that, in the case of his cousins’ children, if they had too many then the babies would be taken away. Gavrilo knew that his cousins had lost a great number of theirs and so had more to compensate. But that never went down well. The Krums wanted to trim the Angelova stock. They couldn’t just leave them be. Gavrilo hated the thought of his own children being taken away just for existing. He didn’t know what they did with the children but he doubted whatever it was, was good.

Gavrilo bristled and averted his eyes. This wasn’t about him and he didn’t appreciate being turned on him. He knew he’d made a point of making his situation known but he didn’t want her to throw it back in his face. He knew he hated the Krums and that they hated him. He was already aware of this thank-you-very-much. He didn’t need to be reminded. He knew why they’d chosen them. They’d chosen them because everyone else wanted to be at the hospital and they were disposable. It was a wonder they hadn’t sent the young ones but Gavrilo thanked Merlin that Stefan (who had sent them) wasn’t nearly as cruel as his brother when angry. Come to think of it, Stefan had been livid and Gavrilo hadn’t even thought to wonder why.

Pushing those thoughts from his mind, Gavrilo set his eyes on Chase whose anger was steadily building inside of her. Swallowing, Gavrilo rose to his feet as he did, formulating some sort of plan in his mind to get her to calm down. He was drawing nothing though and he could only do but gape at her. She was...wow. He could understand why Elijah would have gone for her. The sex must have been...no – he was not to think about that. He’d been wandering through forests too long. He wasn’t the girl in every port type of guy but sweet Merlin...it had clearly been a while.

“I am doing this because it is the only chance I have to make them trust my family. They hate us. They would like to obliterate us but they do not because we are useful. We are used to fulfil their sordid wishes. They use us in whatever manner they wish. This is the only possible opportunity I will have in my lifetime to make them see that we are people and that they can trust us. I need to do this. If I can’t then what am I supposed to do? I cannot go home to my parents and tell them that I can’t find Fauve or Thierry! You are right! They should have sent someone else but everyone else is at St. Mungo’s waiting on news about your fiancé! You should be there!”

Gavrilo rolled his eyes and sighed angrily. “Please do not compare this to the dying children in Africa or the starving Mudbloods in the Malfoy basements. This is a struggle. This is about money and power and goodness only knows what. The Krums can do whatever they want because they have money and power. You should have known he was bad news the minute you even considered him for a lover. They all are! All of them are bad news! They will bleed you dry if you cannot survive there. Do you not realise that that is why they have so many children? They lose a wife – someone gets them a new one. You are disposable but until you break off the engagement you have a duty to him! He is a selfish bastard but all he has ever wanted to be is ‘loved’.” Gavrilo certainly did not forget the air-quotes.

Internally, Gavrilo groaned. Why was he here? What had he done to deserve this punishment? He didn’t want to know, frankly but this was his reality and he had no choice. He had to make her see whether it was the last thing he ever did. He had a feeling it would be one of the last things he ever did too if he couldn’t get her ‘home’.

“He does not have a family to love! We all stand alone in this family! No one can rest on each other because everyone is waiting to stab someone in the back. In a few months time...Viktor will have a new wife. Months after that, she’ll have a new baby and then Elijah will have another heir to fight with. It is dog eat dog and you need to tread on people to get anywhere! What Elijah did was hid himself from that! His hedonism kept him away from that and when he found those children, they became his salvation. I do not want to pretend that I know the ins and outs but I know what sort of affect they had on him. He wants to do good by then but if you take them away from him then he’ll never be able to do that will he!? He will never be able to prove to himself, much less you, that he is a good person!”

When she softened, Gavrilo too calmed down. He had no energy to fight with her, let alone reason. He wanted this to be easy but nothing would ever be easy in this life. He was a fool to think she would cooperate with him. Sighing dejectedly, Gavrilo dropped himself to the floor. He let himself fall back so he was lying down and his eyes fixed themselves on the leaves on the branches above him. How in Merlin’s name was he supposed to explain this to her? Gavrilo doubted this would go over well. In fact, maybe it would end well for him. Somehow though, he didn’t think so.

“Elijah was found with a woman. As it so happens, she was dead. I do not think they think he murdered her. He is incapable of that – he is too floppy.” Gavrilo sighed again and closed his eyes, enjoying the feeling of the sun on his face. “She was dead long before the fire. Everything was incinerated. They were just in time. They got them out but it was too late for her. She’d felt the chill of the most unforgivable curse there is. He was supposed to die with her I think...in a crueller way. He was supposed to suffer. They are claiming memory loss now. That was the last I heard. Viktor seems to think he’s lost a grand total of three to four years of his life. They do not know exactly but he certainly will not remember you. How convenient for you. If it is any consolation,” Gavrilo added standing up. “He might not even survive. He might die. Then you’ll get to keep his ‘legitimate children’ as well as his bastard. You lucky little thing!”

Chase stared at him in disbelief. "Then why don't you leave? If you are so under them.. make your own family... go away from them.. what they do doesn't matter! Not everything rests upon the rich and powerful! I had nothing to do with them before, and I will have nothing to do with them now! Do you really think that doing what they want will make them think differently of you? They will only know that you will continue doing as they please, because they know your position! They know that you want in, and so they send you to do their dirty work.. because they know you'll do it with the hope to get in! I don't get it!" She said and put her hands over her head. "Just leave them! You will be much happier!" She said with an anguished cry, sounding like a hurt dog for a moment.

"You really think that by having a wife will make him feel loved? This power struggle? It never concerned me! I didn't! It shouldn't! Why shouldn't I compare it to the dying people in Africa? Why should I be concerned about people in the Malfoy Manor! Is it my fault that I care so much about that family that I will leave them to help them grow! Don't you realize why I did it? I want them to be able to grow! I want them to change, to learn that they must depend on themselves to grow up! Not on other people! They must be able to look at themselves in the mirror and know who they are! Not be surrounded by mystery! I have been starved, nearly killed, disowned, and penniless.. I have had no family or friends in the world, had it, and then lost it! He doesn't need a wife! He doesn't need children! He needs to get an apartment in the worst part of London and LIVE!" she half shouted at him, her fists clenched so hard small flecks of blood were beginning to leak from under her fingernails.

"He needs to grow without a crutch! Like everyone else in the world! He needs to learn that there are things bigger then him, and I will help him do that! I will take away his crutch.. whether by force, or with love.. either way, his crutch will be taken away, and he will have to survive or die! Because like you said.. it's a dog eat dog world.. and even the richest people need to learn that you don't get what you want because you have power, you get what you want with love.." She said and sat down heavily beside him.

Chase was in shock by what she heard next.. about Elijah nearly killed, the house burnt down, a dead woman. Memory loss, the words floated through her mind, but didn't stick, just kind of floated being pondered over. If he lived.. he'd get a new lease on life.. he'd get the life Chase wanted for him, a fresh start.. she had had one of those, it was her second chance, she didn't have any other chances, and she wouldn't have any other chances, she had used it, and now.. Elijah was getting his. Surprisingly, after he made the jab about her and the bastard children, she smiled, a smile so sad it could break your heart. She slowly looked at him. "Good..." She said softly. "So he either dies.. meaning he won't ever have to worry again.. or he gets a second chance at life.. he'll get to start all over and learn to love again.. good.." She said softly, the small sad smile still in place.

Suddenly she stood up. "I will go talk to Viktor... he won't find out where the kids are.. but I will speak to him." She said firmly. "It is the best you can do... and you won't have to suffer complete shame to your family if you bring me to Viktor... though I kind of feel like a hostage doing this... I will go with you." She said and looked down at him, an odd fierce glint in her eyes as she watched the man who she knew was in the same situation as she was, except he wanted in, and she wanted out.

-----------------------------------------------------------
What was with this woman? Gavrilo knew she wasn’t doing it on purpose but he couldn’t help but grimace as she threw back everything he was already are of in his face. He knew that if they broke away and disappeared everything would be good for them. They could be prosperous and wealthy. Eighty percent of everything his father earned went to them. It had always been like that. Never had they known anything but the bare minimum. That was why Gavrilo adored the manor as much as he did. They didn’t get to go there often but when they did, he took in as much as possible. He loved the beauty, the aristocratic air that they exuded. He’d wanted to be a part of that since he’d been a child. He wanted to show his family in a good light and he would have given up anything to put them into favour – to make the Krums trust them.

Chase was right though. He was better off just taking their branch away – somewhere where they’d be safe. He knew his father had always liked Austria so perhaps there would be a good idea. He didn’t want to risk it though. He’d heard rumours of someone trying it before and no one wanted to say how they’d met their end. All Gavrilo had ever been told was that it wasn’t present. He knew though that they couldn’t live like that much longer. They couldn’t. They were waiting on Elijah though. For some reason, they saw him as their saviour. They saw him as a fresh face, someone who wasn’t nearly as prejudiced as the rest of them were. They were hoping against hope – Gavrilo’s mother even praying – that he would do something for them – anything – just something to make their lives better. Or even, dare they even think about it, set them free.

“Do you not think we have thought about that? Do you not think that I do not see the desperation in the eyes of my siblings? Do you not think that I want us to be free? I want that more than anything in the world but we cannot leave. We are blamed for the mistakes of my great-grandfather. Nia Angelova was his mistress. She gave him the children he needed – the ones his wife could not supply.” Gavrilo smiled humourlessly. When she had Elijah’s great-grandfather...well, there was no need for her then. The otherwise baron wife gave him the son he needed and so Nia was discarded. But of course...the Krums wouldn’t forget. As we ‘multiplied’ they clawed us back and kept tabs on us. We are illegitimate but they treat us like we are threats to them. So they keep us where they can affect us most – right by their sides. We have to endure that. We can’t just walk away, Chase. It doesn’t work like that. I want to live, frankly. If we disappear they’ll find us and that’ll be it. They’ll kill us.”

Gavrilo swallowed the lump that formed in his throat and he rubbed his hands across his face, groaning as he sat up. This wasn’t about him for goodness sake! Her voice, her reason, pounded against him. It was as if she was throwing bricks at him and hitting the target every time. She knew exactly what she wanted for those children but it wasn’t dictatorial. She wasn’t planning out their lives. She wasn’t taking their freedom away. Gavrilo found himself admiring the woman before him. He admired her resolve and her determination. He wished he possessed such strong traits. She was brave. He was...like a cow that got into the line with the rest of the cattle. He hated it but he knew it had to be done.

“He can’t live.” Gavrilo replied quietly, defeated. “He won’t live. He refuses to look in the mirror because he knows what he’ll see and he’s scared that everything he already knows is true will be recognised in his reflection. He doesn’t want that does he? He doesn’t want to know that his whole person is based on lies and deceit and the person he was doesn’t exist anymore. He knows what he’ll find. If you listen to him, you’ll hear him tell someone that no, he isn’t a good person. He knows what he is. He is very aware. He doesn’t know any other alternative. He had one extreme – total weakness. What he has, or had, was some form of power within himself. He was strong. Now...he’s back to square one again. He can’t flourish on his own. He’s never been able to do things on his own. He’s dense. He’s not stupid but he’s reliant. He wants so desperately to have what he’s never had and it has ruined him – poisoned him. What you saw wasn’t what many of us remember or ever knew. I don’t know who he is. I don’t even think he knows. He’s not...real. What you saw wasn’t real it was just a coping mechanism of sorts.”

Gavrilo looked over at Chase and shook his head. “Then you have condemned him to death.” he said simply.

Scoffing, Gavrilo ran his fingers through his hair. He dropped his hands into his lap and stared at the rings on his fingers. Every one was an heirloom something he possessed only ever by chance. His fingers dipped to the feminine ring on the last finger of his right hand and he slid it off. Gavrilo held the ring up to the light and held it out for Chase to take.

“He doesn’t know how to love.” Gavrilo murmured, taking her hand and placing the ring in her palm. “But maybe he will learn. Wear it; it was my great-grandmother’s. Viktor will...appreciate it.” Gavrilo’s lips twisted into a smirk and he chuckled. “Either that or he’ll curse me into oblivion and I’ll be nought but a pile of ashes. Come on...I think my cousins are spying. I had better get you on common ground so you two can meet. The forest will do won’t it?

Chase listened to him in shock. The Krum family... Viktor.. Elijah, everyone she had met, everyone who had seemed like such a nice place to be, a big loving family, sure they had their differences, but she had been right in there, close and personal, pregnant, and watched, wondered over and happy, and now.. after she left, she found out about this horrid side to the family. The Angelova's... the family she had seen, but hadn't really talked to. The family that hoped, and prayed for a way out of their position in life.. just as Chase had hoped and prayed every day of her life. They were the same.. Chase and the Angelova's.. except that Chase wasn't as useless as the Krum's thought the Angelova's were.. in fact, they couldn't kill Chase BECAUSE she had the kids with her.. as long as the kids were safe.. she was safe, for if they killed her before they found them, well... they would never find them.

Chase was shaking all over. The Krum family.. they had seemed so.. good.. and now? She despised them, every single one of them. The family felt rotten, like she had picked the biggest healthiest apple off the branch, and then bit into it to find it was rotten. Now she was trying to spit it out, but it wouldn't go.. she wanted it away, but it was stuck to her hand.

Chase listened to Gavrilo speak, he knew Elijah better then Elijah knew himself it seemed, and yet.. Chase wasn't sure what to believe anymore. He was coping.. that was all Elijah was with him. Chase stared ahead for a long time, and then looked at him. "Do you think he ever loved me Gavrilo? Do you think he is ever even capable of love? If he is... if he's back to square one.. and can't figure out how to do it himself.. then maybe.. maybe they can get his memory back.. maybe someone can.. and he can rebuild himself.. with the knowledge of what he's done.. maybe he just needs me away.. needs the crutch taken away.. but needs the memories there to do it.. The Krums.. They feel wicked to me now.. You are nice.. you are brave... and strong.." Chase looked at him and then reached out, taking his hand lightly. "You deserve to get what you want.. you deserve it, and I believe that from the bottom of my heart... You deserve to be free... just as much as Elijah deserves to be free.. to break apart that family once and for all..." She said with a small sad smile again.

When he held the ring out and opened her palm. Chase gently closed her hand around it, and then brought it up to her eyes, looking at the ring. "Thank you Gavrilo... I want to help you so badly... but at this point.. if I were to even mention you I'm sure it would be worse on you.. but I will do my best.. in fact... I will try as hard as I can.. you have given me something to work for now.. if I must.. I will join the family again.. do what they want me to do... I will free your family Gavrilo.. I will free them, and I will help you... I will save the children.. I will set this right... if I have to die trying.. my child is in safe hands.. the kids will be safe... I have them hidden where no one would look.. in plain site, but unseen... and you can quote me on that.. if I die helping you Gavrilo... know that the kids at least are safe." She said and nodded, standing up and heading towards the forbidden forest, to meet the other people he was with.

There wasn’t anything Gavrilo could really do to comfort Chase. She needed to heal on her own. Elijah needed to apologize for his misdeeds and they needed to work it out between them. Gavrilo knew that the children would need a firm father figure within their lives and somehow he had a feeling that Chase had already supplied that for them. Oddly he was glad. Picking Elijah hadn’t really put much stock in her taste in her taste in men but Gavrilo had a good feeling that they were in the right place. They were in a good environment – not in a poisonous one. Elijah could claim to love them, and it was clear that he did, but the environment that they’d been growing up in hadn’t been ideal.

Now he just hoped they were safe and well and happy.

“Elijah...” Gavrilo bit his lip and managed a smile for Chase; a warm one that created a fuzzy feeling in his chest. “He always loved you. I don’t know what he plans on doing next. No one can really predict his next movements. He’s a loose cannon.” Gavrilo looked at Chase as her hand slipped into his and he squeezed it gently. “Thank you. Elijah can’t afford to break away though. Too much would happen that would be determintal to the family’s wellbeing. He cares about all of them and he knows as well as I do that if he...abdicates so to speak...everything will go to pot. I can only hope he does right by us.”

Gavrilo didn’t think Elijah would though. As images of the day in the kitchen flashed through his mind, he was reminded that Elijah wasn’t as promising as Zaria, Gavrilo’s mother, though. Perhaps though, with the memories being returned...he’d change.

The idea that she would sacrifice herself just to help him made Gavrilo’s blood run cold. He leaned over and placed a kiss on her cheek in thanks but shook his head. “You are brave. Just...don’t worry about us. We’re alright. We’ve lived with it for long enough, we know how to handle the Krums. There is a little girl out there that needs her mother. You can’t afford to die. Now come on, I’m sure this will be a whirlwind and I am eager to get it over and done with.”

Gavrilo followed Chase across the grass to the forest where he could see the boys and several others lingering by the entrance. Gavrilo smiled, noticing his great-uncle among the group that had gathered. A brown head of hair broke through the mass of people and Gavrilo brightened upon seeing Irania. She toddled down the hill and broke out into a run, much to the dismay of Ali who seemed to be looking after her sister. Gavrilo knelt down and held his arms out for the three-year-old. She bundled into him and Gavrilo whisked her up into the air. She screamed and giggled, reaching out to grab a fistful of her brother’s shirt to steady herself. Gavrilo smiled and kissed her forehead before hugging her to him. She yawned and nestled her head into the crook of his neck as the motion lulled her to sleep.

“Ali, I thought you were staying home.” Gavrilo chided his sister as he handed Irania back to her. Ali blushed and scuttled away but not before reaching up to peck her brother on the lips. Gavrilo smiled wistfully and shook his head, once again dumping his bag on the floor. “Have you called them?” Gavrilo looked over at Jakob and smiled a little when the old man nodded.

“The Gods are smiling down upon you my son,” Jakob murmured, placing his hands on Gavrilo’s shoulders. “You have done well. You mother and father will be pleased.” Jakob retracted his hands and let his wife embrace Gavrilo as he moved on to the redhead. “So you are the girl Elijah is so enamoured with. Yes, I understand why he would be. Now, tell me all about yourself Ms. Moor. I’ve heard many an old wives tale. What’s this about you having a baby?”

Gavrilo shook his head, amused by the way his relative fired questions at her. He was a kindly old man. At ninety-three he was still as sprightly as ever but he was getting forgetful now. He read the stars. He’d grown up as an astrologer and that was why his words at first did not confuse Gavrilo in the slightest. He embraced them. As Gavrilo began to drifted into his thoughts, he was pulled out of them again by James who was shouting at his youngest brother – Rupert.

“Look at this! Look at this! Look what the dozy twat got!” His eyes fell on Gavrilo and he beckoned his cousin over. With a sigh, Gavrilo decided to comply and he stepped off of the embankment and walked across the clearing to the boys. Around nine pieces of card were thrust into his hands and Gavrilo turned one of them over, surprised by what he found.

“Tickets to the Harpies-Tornados game!” Edward exclaimed, peering over Gavrilo’s shoulder. He looked up and glared at his brother. “Who’d you get to make them then you little scammer?”

Charles leaned over and swiped a handful of the tickets out of Gavrilo’s grasp so he could inspect them. “Let me see them.” He hummed for a while before adding, “Well...they look legit. Where the bloody hell did you get these?”

All eyes turned to the fourteen year old who shrugged non-comittedly and replied, slap-happily, “Nicked ‘em o’course. I’d have to work for months just to get one ticket and to be honest; it is much more fun to take ‘em. Your best friend had ‘em lying around and they looked awful lonely so I just...took ‘em.”

Gavrilo blanched while Edward spluttered and forced the tickets back into his younger brother’s hands, yelling, “You took these from Andres? What have you got – a death wish?”

Charles snickered and grinned, adding, “I’d love to see his face when he figures out that it was you. We’ll come to the funeral, have no fear.”

Rupert paled considerably and let the tickets fall to the floor. “Oh Christ...he’s going to hurt me isn’t he?”

“Yep. We may as well go and see the game because it’ll be the last thing you’ll ever do.” Charles replied unhelpfully.

With a growl, Gavrilo slapped his cousin around the back of the head. He yelped and Gavrilo reached down to pick up the tickets. He took Rupert by the shirt collar and dragged him over to where his grandmother was stood. Gavrilo handed the tickets over and Rupert sniffled loudly, muttering something incoherent under his breath. Gavrilo released the boy and ruffled his hair, whispering quietly to Nia, telling her to “take him home.”

The was a rumble of magic overhead and Gavrilo looked up to see the dark smoke that signified the Krum’s appearance. He gestured for Ali to come over and he took her hair grip. He mumbled the charm needed to make a Portkey and got a disapproving look from his great-aunt. “Go home.” Gavrilo ordered. “I want the children out of here. Ali, you shouldn’t have come at all. Just, go!” He thrust the hair grip into Rupert’s and they all disappeared as the magic tugged on their navels. Gavrilo whirled around as the Krums arrived, sending Edward, Charles and James scattering. The boys ran up the embankment and hid behind their mother who had decided to join them.

There, in all his glory, stood Stefan, wand at the ready and eager, no doubt, to strike a bargain. “Gavrilo!” He drawled sarcastically, waltzing forward. “How have you been?”

“Let me at him and I’ll knock his freaking block off,” Charles hissed under his breath. Gavrilo heard the faint sound of Edward holding him back and he stepped forward, sliding down the embankment to meet the person they usually did business with. Stefan was like a portal – a sneaky, conniving, backstabbing portal that would screw them over continuously even after they helped him.

“Whose life have you been ruining today? You seem to be in a good mood,” Gavrilo replied with equal venom. “Let me guess...you dug Marina up and raped her again.” One of the women stifled a gasp and he heard a scuffle from behind as one of them tried to press forward but was obviously stopped by whoever was in front. Gavrilo remained firm and raised an eyebrow at Stefan who remained unsettlingly smug. “Or better...” he continued. “You got to what meant to her the most.”

“What was that? Her shoe closet?” Stefan quipped, making the sides of Gavrilo’s lips quirk slightly. “Rape is such a strong word...”

“A word that best fits exactly what you did. Though actually I was referring to her first love – her children. What exactly have you been up to?” He lowered his voice slightly and Stefan smirked.

“A little bit of this, a little bit of that. It is all advantageous. Perhaps you should try not being as loyal to that family as you are. Perhaps you should start being loyal to me.”

“And come out like Marina did? No thank you.” Gavrilo shook his head. “We wanted Viktor – where is he?”

“With his son. He’s all screwed up. Brain damage they say. Extensive memory loss. Three years.” Stefan couldn’t keep the grin off of his face and Gavrilo whistled lowly.

“Wow. Well done you. Now, let’s get to the good stuff shall we? I want my money first and then I might just think about giving you the information you want.”

“You might think about it?” Stefan raised his wand threateningly and Gavrilo smirked in return.

“The money, then go and get Viktor. I called for him, not you, you filthy creature. So, firstly, the coins if you please.” Gavrilo extended his hand and Stefan begrudgingly reached into the pocket of his waistcoat. He produced a plum-coloured bag and dropped it into Gavrilo’s hands. “It’s a pleasure doing business with you. Now leave. I want Viktor here.”

“If you keep on wanting boy then you might just end up dead.” Stefan hissed.

“Yes well, we all have our time. Now...Viktor if you please?” Gavrilo prompted. Growling, Stefan disappeared with a crack. Gavrilo exhaled and turned around, tightening the draw-string and tossing the coins to Edward. “Count them won’t you? I want to know if he’s screwed me over again.”

“Why do you bother with him, Gav?” Charles complained, striding down the embankment. “He’s the worst of the lot.”

“He’s the only one that makes deals, Charlie, that’s why. Now shut up, here comes Viktor.” Gavrilo looked up and watched as Viktor dropped elegantly out of the sky and landed easily on his feet. The boys dropped into low bows, as did the rest of the ones on the embankment. Only Chase and Jakob were left standing.

“Well done, Gavrilo,” Viktor commented as he strode past. “Evidently you’re not as useless as I’d first imagined.” Edward straightened up immediately and turned, abandoning the coins and stalking after Viktor. Gavrilo gathered his cousin up before he got to close to the head of the family and Viktor turned, raising an elegant eyebrow at the two boys. “Jakob,” Viktor turned back around and addressed the elderly man. “Why don’t you bow?”

“I don’t see anyone worth bowing for,” Jakob replied bravely. He snapped his fingers, feigning comprehension. “Of course! You mean why don’t I bow to you?” Viktor nodded slowly. “I think my feelings towards your family were clear the day I married Milena, Viktor.”

“And yet...both of your children suffered the consequences for your actions. Milena also to my knowledge,” Viktor remarked as Jakob bristled. “Chastity, you will be leaving with me. I will place you in Kalina and Arlene’s care at the manor. You will tell the Angelovas where your children are and I will send Gavrilo and his cousins to collect them. They will be brought to you and it is there where you will remain. Any questions?”

“What crawled up your arse and died?” James quipped bravely. Viktor rounded on him and the bravery soon fled from his stance as the man – easily twice the size of him – strode towards him. Viktor drew his wand and Gavrilo dropped Edward. Viktor flicked his wand and a flash of green light sped towards Viktor. Gavrilo shot from where he was standing and tackled his cousin to the ground. James gave an ‘oof!’ but seemed unheard and wands were drawn as the spell bounced off of one of the trees. Jakob was the one that ended the spell though, with a simple wave of his hands.

“James was rude but there was no need for that, Viktor,” Jakob said coolly. “Now, Ms. Moor has her own stipulations and I’d rather prefer it if you didn’t turn your wand on my family members. You would have any of us killed if we touched your children with our wands in a detrimental way. Kindly refrain from becoming hypocritical. James meant nothing by that. He is headstrong, like your boy. He is merely being a teenager.”

“You would do well to keep your ‘sons’ in line then wouldn’t you?” Viktor replied as he sheathed his wand. Gavrilo helped James to his feet and they dusted themselves off as Viktor turned his attention to the elder. “What exactly are Ms. Moor’s stipulations, then?”
