A practice duel

Jess walked into the Duelling arena, waiting for his oponent, the owner and proprieter of Staffs and Sticks, Caelani Bittel, to arrive and face him in a duel. He didn't really need the practice, he'd had more than enough versing evil people over the past year or two, but it didn't hurt to get out and have a practice... or maybe it did, physically, but not that bad.

If Jess Potter had known that Caelani had duelled him just days ago, maybe he wouldn't have been so eager to face her once more. And you thought death eater masks were just a bad fashion statement. No, they're practical as well.

She came out from behind the till, beckoning for Angelique to follow. They would need an adjudicator and it was about time 'Lique learned the ropes.

"Potter," she greeted her opponent. "This is Angelique. She'll be our judge."

Caelani bowed to the do-gooder. Hating his innards was insufficient reason to be impolite when it came to duelling etiquette.

Angelique had only been helping out at Staffs and Sticks for a week. She already hated it, but her daddy said it would be good for her to learn "life skills." Also, he wouldn't buy her any new robes if she quit.

When Caelani called her over to help with a duel, things were definitely looking up. The place had been empty the entire time Angelique had been working there. Finally, a break from the monotony.

"Um, take your positions," she told the duellists, "and begin."

She hastily jumped off the platform to get out the way of the spell that Caelani was bound to fire at that poor man. Angelique had been working with the other woman long enough to know how fast she could curse someone.

Jess smiled and bowed to the lady. "Bittel," he said, a measured ammount of spite in his voice. The sound of her voice was familiar, and he thought he recognised her, in fact, he did, not the face, there was reasonable doubt about the face, but all signs pointed to her being one of the Death Eaters he'd fought, not even a week ago.

"Ladies first," he said smiling at her

Oooooh, was that anger in his voice? Jess had no reason to be angry at her; he had no way of knowing who she was. Calli let it go. Maybe he was just here to blow off some steam. A smile crept across her face. How deliciously ironic!

"Well, aren't you the gentleman?" she said.

Now that she said it aloud, it did seem to be a trait. Caelani would have to mention that at the next death eater meeting. No doubt they could use it against him and through him, all of the Order.

"Hmm, whatever shall I use? Something gentle to start, yes? Allium Auris."

"Obsidio," Jess shouted, blocking the spell easily. "Is that all you've got? A hex? Honestly, i'dve thought you would've tried something harder," jess said, smiling at her. "I suppose it's a good starter, but really it's up to you," he said shaking his head.

"Stingo," Jess cast, flicking his wand at Caelani, watching the spell head towards her.

"Not all I've got, no," Calli just had time to get the sentence out before Jess' spell hit her.

She took it on the shoulder, and winced as the stinging sensation inflamed her arm.

"This isn't some dirty little fight, Jess," she continued. "Duelling is an art form. One must test one's opponent. Find their weaknesses."

"Tremulus!"

Her wand flicked toward his legs.
