"Are you sure you want to go home right now?" Brian asked Khaat. He pointed off into the distance, "Look. What a beautiful sunset over the water. " She looked where he was pointing. It was magnificent. No magic could ever match the natural beauty that was in the world.
"It's incredible," she said softly.
"You know what I want to do?"
"No. Tell me," she said.
"I know a small, candlelit 5 star restaurant overlooking the ocean, and it serves the best Italian food. I would love for us to go back, unload the car, change for a really great dinner. Did you happen to bring, maybe a dress?"
She smiled at him, "Oh, I brought a dress. I did bring a dress." He laughed.
"Shall we, then?" he asked. She nodded. He drove home and they unloaded the car and their new groceries. They went to their rooms and changed for dinner. Khaat went to her closet and pulled out short little cockatil dress. It was a one shoulder ivory lace dress. She liked how it accented her tan. She paired it with a pair of the tallest ivory stillettos she could find. It amde her legs look long and tanned and shapely. She used magic to style her hair in an updo, and fastened it with a gold haircomb studded with little diamonds. She added a pair of diamond earrings and a diamond tennis bracelet. She accented it with a brown silk shawl that she draped over her arm for now, but she thought that perhaps it would be welcome when it got cooler. She added just a touch of a light perfune and, after a quick check, she went downstairs to meet Brian.
He had changed into a pair of dress slacks, dress shirt, and a beautiful black leather blazer. He was incredibly handsome. He was no longer the boy she had accompanied on so many advertures of their imagination. He stood, looking at her, speechless. He cleared his throat nervously. "Wow," he said softly, "That really is some dress."
"It'll do?" she asked. "Oh, yeah," he said, smiling affectionately. "You really are very handsome, Brian," she said, stunned by him tonight. Either that or the Tuscan air was going to her head. "It'll do," he laughed gently.
He took her up the coast to a little place well hidden away from the tourist trade. It was very small and intimate. The maitre'd clearly knew Brian and greeted him by name and commented it was nice to see him bring in a woman for a change, instead of a big group of men, and he commented it was nice to see such a beautiful woman as well. He said he had just the right table for us. He led them out to a beautiful candlelit terrace with just a few tables on it, but Khaat hardly saw anyone else at all except how breathtaking it all was and how perfectly safe and happy she felt to be here with Brian tonight.
The sommelier brought a perfectly chilled bottle of wine for Brian's approval, and he selected it flawlessly like he had been doing it all his life. When the waiter arrived, Brian chose their excellently prepared grilled garlic shrimp with an herb risotto and a frisse salad. He ordered tiramisu for dessert, and ending with espressos as they sat under the stars and listened to the waves lapping gently against the shore.
After dinner, he led her down to the beach where they kicked off their shoes and walked down the beach together, carrying their shoes and just talking. Khaat felt all her stress and all the ugliness from the recent months melting away. Her father had been right when he had told her that a holiday was not only well deserved but much advised. It had been a long time since she had been truly happy, and it was nice to have it back. If no man ever loved her again, living with Brian would still be wonderful. Life was beginning to taste sweet again, and she was liking it.
When they drove home it was late, and the night air was getting cold. They had lost all track of time. She didn't know whether Steven and Ronata were home yet, but if they were she had no desire to disturb them. "I know the perfect nightcap," he smiled. "Find your nightgown, and I'll meet you with it outside in a moment." She changed, went out to the terrace on the second floor, and was just tying her robe as he arrived with two mugs. He handed her one. It was hot cocoa. It made her laugh. He'd changed to his jeans and a longsleeved shirt and he sat beside her in the other lounge chair. It had been a completely perfect day, and now, sitting here in nothing but the silence of the night and the ocean below, they sat together and looked at the stars.
