Nonverbal magic – With a father whose soul job it is to research spells and their effectiveness, Amelia became a perfect experimental candidate for almost anything that had to do with magic. Her father had impressed upon her the necessity of being able to perform non-verbal magic when she was in her fourth year, and through his constant tutoring she became proficient. Because her mind was already so ordered, Amelia had little trouble blocking out other thoughts that might interfere with her intentions. This made her progress somewhat faster than her father had anticipated, earning her the rare nod of approval from her father.
Apparation – Just as all others in her year, Amelia had taken courses which were designed to teach apparation. As her father could not legally help her with the magic while she was underage, this had been new to Amelia. Unaccustomed to starting at the same point as her classmates, Amelia had been handicapped by her frustration for the first few lessons. After much practice and coaching, Amelia had finally been able to master the skill, though she still uses it rarely both because of her nearly constant presence inside the Hogwarts grounds (where apparation is impossible), and because she does not like to remember her inadequacy when she first began lessons.
Occlumens – It had been Amelia's mother, not her father, who had brought up the subject of occlumens. Antoinette knew that Amelia's thoughts were not always as controlled as her words, and thus she had begun to teach her daughter to protect her mind, so as to protect herself. Amelia's mind was a hazard to her mother's perfect social appearance, and thus must be closed to any who might pry for information. It was last summer that Amelia mastered the skill, and although her mother was reassured by the fact that Amelia would no longer spill family secrets to others, she was not as thrilled when Amelia used her newfound skill to keep her mother out of her mind as well.
