"They'd better all hurry, or they'll be late," Marcus said, looking at the clock.
"They certainly will be," Angus frowned.
"I'll get the girls if one of you rousts out Victor," Angus said. He went downstairs to see the girls had left their room door partly open, not expecting anyone to come down. And as he went downstairs, he heard Ginger talking to Anise.
"What are you gonna do? If Dad sees it, he's gonna go nuts," she was saying. Approaching the doorway, Angus saw Anise was in her jeans and her bra, and had yet to put her shirt on. Even from where he was, he saw some clear, fresh bruises on her shoulders and on her back.
"I wrote down Marcus's glamour spell," Anise was flipping through a notebook. "I'm gonna try it..." Angus walked in, uninvited.
"The glamour spell won't hide bruises. I'll tell you what. Don't ask me to do this twice, but I'll help you hide it for now," Angus said, knowing exactly how she felt. "And I won't hide it for you forever. Where's that new purple and black plaid shirt you just bought?"
"Still in the bag. Haven't had a chance to cut the tags off," she said.
"That'll cover it for now," Angus said. "Wear that. And, here." he handed her a single vial of pain potion from his pocket. "Take half now. It won't affect you if you only take half. You can take the rest with you in case you need it after lunch. Now, how did it happen? Or do I need to ask? She couldn't get to me, so she came for you, didn't she?" Anise tried to ignore him by getting the shirt out of the bag and cut off the price tags. "Anise," he prompted.
"I didn't want to tell you because I know what you'll do," she looked at him, frightened for him.
"My dear," he told her quietly, "I know you're concerned about that, but, frankly, it's one thing if she comes for me, but it is quite another if she even thinks about touching you. I have to respond now. I don't have a choice. I'll be fine...."
"You have to take Marcus with you and..."
"Stop. Take a breath, and calm yourself. It's alright," he said, still very calm. He drew both girls close and gave them a kiss on the forehead. "I'll make that dark chocolate cake you showed me the recipe for, alright? We can have it for supper tonight. Oh, and go check out the terrarium. The new Fae are hatching. That's something I'm sure very few of your schoolmates have ever seen. Now, go tuck into some breakfast before you go." They nodded, and they picked up their bags and went upstairs.
They put the bags near the door, checked out the terrarium, and then they fixed their plates. Angus followed them back upstairs and went out long enough to get the papers, and then he whistled for Finn to let him out. While Finn was out, he filled Finn's bowls and then fixed his own plate. He had no plan yet, except for breakfast. He was hungry.
