Fabian showed his credentials to the man at the gate, and the cars drove through.
"Right about now, they're scrambling like rats trying to leave a sinking ship, I'm sure," Fabian said. "It could be staging, of course," he agreed with Lucian. "Or, perhaps they really are hiring a legitimate nanny so they can show a paper trail of trying to do the right thing. And of course we're keeping records." Fabian had seen this type before, but not usually in Lupin's men. This new one, Fabian thought, he had limited trust in others that he did not know. That didn't particularly bother Fabian. If that was what Lucian needed, then so be it.
"Open the glove compartment, would you? Get out two of those tiny little boxes, give one to Aria, and take one for yourself. Open them. You'll find they are lapel pins with the French Ministry insignia. Put one on, each of you. But be careful. I honestly couldn't care less if you had one, except that they're miniature wizarding cameras. The wording at the bottom of the lapel pin is the shutter button. All you have to do is touch it. Make sure you use the same hand that you put the pin on because the actual lens and the shutter is in the red, white, and blue striping right above the words. Use the wrong hand, and all we'll see is the palm of your hand in your picture. Get a photo of anything questionable that you see. Make sure you have someone with you at all times so the Gelding's can't accuse you of planting anything, and they have a habit of that anyway. Not the first time I've talked with them, but it is our first search warrant.
"If I were you, I'd look for anything that shows them to be neglectful parents. That's one of three concerns we have. Or, anything that proves what they do to other's children, because that's our second concern, but I'm sure their attorneys have had them moving that stuff for days in case this actually happened. Be careful that you don't overreact to any dark arts paraphernalia you find. Dark arts paraphernalia is not illegal here, not by itself. However, if it is used to hurt someone else, then, yes, that could be. Anything that shows some sort of proof of Suzanne's mental instability might be helpful, but that, on its own, is no crime. We'd have to use it as proof of either her unfitness as a mother or her obsession with Angus and her desire to eliminate him. And her obsession with him and her repeated attempts to kill him is our third concern. Got the idea?
"Professionally," Fabian said, "I consider the concerns to have equal importance. Personally, I am concerned, first for how they make their money and who they hurt in the process. Secondly, I am concerned about her relentlessness in wanting Angus dead, because I've trained with him. I've fought with him in some of those middle of the night raids. He's damned fierce when he's on those raids, putting everything he has into getting those kids home. I don't want to see your boss lose him to a daft old cow like Suzanne. And I know this is not politically correct, but I am not as concerned, personally, for the baby, because I know she's in safe hands as long as she's with Angus and Ruby. I don't know Ruby well, but I do know Angus, and he's not going to take up with someone who wasn't a decent person." He parked the car and put the keys in his pocket and then he got out. When Aria and Lucian got out, Fabian locked the car with an enchantment.
His other workers came up to Fabian's car, and Fabian told them in French not to get rough and turn the house upside down. He told them to leave those dramatics to muggle television shows but to stick to the task and be polite about it so that there wasn't any sort of accusations of inappropriateness on their part. they nodded that they understood. He was firm that he expected their British allies to be treated well, and he introduced them to the team by first names only.
"Lucian," Fabian said, "you might be a good partner for my second in command." He gestured to a young man with cocoa brown hair and glasses. He was well dressed. "This is Aubert. He has an eidetic memory, and that makes him particularly gifted on tasks like this. Aubert, you and Lucian look for the little details, yes? You're good at that, and I have a feeling Lucian is excellent with details too. I dont' think he misses much. I'd like the two of you to double check to make sure that the rest of the boys don't miss anything."
"Bonjour, Lucian," Aubert said. "I look forward to working with you."
"Aria, you're welcome to come with me if you like," Fabian said, "or anyone else you might like to go with. I want to start by finding where all the members of the household are, including their guests and making sure they're on the premises. Can't have them popping out, can we?" Fabian gave her a bit of a grin that he did have a plan in mind. He honestly did want Lucian and Aubert looking for any tiny little thing that Tom and Suzanne might be hiding. Something that might help Diamond or Angus, in particular. And he was hoping that Aria and he could find out perhaps what Priscilla was up to by coming here instead of being in New Orleans.
