"Of course," David replied. Angus went to the pantry, got the strawberries and the rest of the baking supplies and took them to the kitchen counter. Then he transformed one of the chairs into a counter stool for Abbey.
"Ready to help me make cookies?" Angus asked her. She raced to him, arms wide open and he scooped her up laughing and swung her around in the air before he landed her on the stool. "You, my girl, are getting almost too big for me to fly you like that anymore."
"Then, maybe someday, I fly you," she said, stretching up to kiss his cheek.
"I just bet someday you will," he smiled. "You wanna scoop flour or you wanna cut strawberries?"
"I cut berries," she nodded. David was a tad concerned about Angus letting a kid not quite four to cut strawberries, so he went over to the counter. Angus gave Abbey a little cutting board, and a plastic knife and the pint of strawberries, along with a clean bowl for the cut berries. Abbey took straight to task, cutting the green tops off the berries and then cutting the berries in half. David was amazed.
"You wanna berry?" she asked David.
"No, thanks. I'm just curious at how you cut berries," he said.
"I show you. You gotta cut this off," she pointed to the green stem. "That yucky. Then cut 'em like this. And that's it."
"You're doing a wonderful job," David said.
"I know. I a big kid now," she said. Angus just smiled at her, scooping flour and sugar into the big mixing bowl. When Angus got out the eggs and cracked them, a piece of shell got into the little bowl he cracked the eggs into. "Aggie," she scowled. "that no good. Right there." She pointed the shell to him. It amused him to no end.
"I probably ought to take that out, huh?"
"Yeah," she said. "I gots no more berries, Aggie." She heard Ruby come down and tell her her bed was ready.
"Not now, Roo Bee," Abbey said. "It not even night yet. And I cook now. Aggie need me to make the cookies."
"I certainly do," Angus said, barely able to keep himself from laughing. She was working so hard to look and act grown up when she was no bigger than a minute herself. "Good. Good job, Abs. Let's cook them into the puree we need. I'll cook the berries if you can gently stir the dry ingredients. Just keep it all in the bowl."
"I think she's about four going on nine," David told Ruby quietly, just watching at how much she really could do. "My kids couldn't begin to do half of that at her age. God, she's smart for her age."
Abbey nodded to Angus, and Angus made a puree from the strawberries to add into the cookie dough with a wee bit of food coloring, and before long, they had pink cookie dough. Abbey helped him roll the dough out and helped him use the cookie cutters to end up a few trays of pink, strawberry kitty cookies, and the house was smelling like warm, sweet cookies. She helped him make the icing and even helped him clean up the mess while they waited for the cookies to bake.
