"Here's what she's not telling you," Robert began. Khaat bristled, feeling protective of Atticus. Robert glared hard at her. "We will not protect him through ignorance, Khaat Karina. All we're doing, in all likelihood, is buying time. It will not stay secret forever." He looked back at Atticus. "Our attackers are werewolves. And they appear to be a notch beyond the norm. We are doing what we can to make sure that if they are targeting us that they do it on our turf. Its part of the reason we're trying not to be here. We do not want to lure them here.
"In all reality, though, if they do come, you want them to come when one of the two of us is here," he said. "Particularly her. If they do come, Khaat is the best defense you have. Stay close to her and stay behind her."
"And if they do come, you have every right to kill--without hesitation," Khaat said. "And you should."
Robert opened his desk drawer and used a wandless, nonverbal spell to open a wooden box in his desk drawer. He drew out a ring and closed the box. It was a simple gold ring. A small antique gold coin set in gold. He handed it to Atticus.
"Put this on," he said. "This is not an ordinary ring. It has a simple alarm charm on it. If you turn the ring a half a turn, clockwise, to turn the coin upside down, you will summon one of the fighters that has agreed to work with us. The charm summons them to the ring, so it is not dependent on where you are. I can't draw a protection ring from dark arts followers around the whole hospital. I can draw it around our offices on this floor. You are active enough that even that has serious limitations for you. You aren't exclusively at your desk. It only helps shield you when you might be more alone."
