What can the backstory for them being victims be? Also would there be a scene where we manage to scare the dark wizard off then all go back to the castle, or the dark wizard could apparate away with Carly and then when he wants to meet Hallie/Maura to bribe them he can bring her back to use as a hostage then when it's at first just Hallie he gets mad to has her hostage etc?

We could do, unless Vivianna's evil character (is it Rivah?) wanted to do it?

The Dark Wizard modifys the victims memory so they don't know who it was, then they all go back to Hogwarts. The Dark Wizard sends Hallie & Maura and owl to meet up as a way to modify their memory so they wont be able to blab what he/she has done and there is no daily prophet article and ignore that bit?

I think an NPC dark wizard would be more fun, at least for this, that way no PC gets beat by a bunch of teenagers. As for why they are there? Just some thieves or something who are hiding out and don't want to be identified so they kidnap someone.

well seeing how there close to Maura/ Hallie maybe they take them due to them being friends! Maybe the dark wizard spies on them without them knowing and knows who there friends are!
