Can't Hide Forever

Audrey grinned and laughed at Penny's small rebellious gestures. Penny couldn't fool anyone that she was a rule breaker, but her small jabs were important, and Audrey just loved them. She couldn't help but feel excitement flare when she thought of shopping. She had just been dying to go, and she had so much to shop for. And seeing Penny out in the world when there was any sort of test coming up was a sight to behold.

She felt her skin itch when Penny began speaking of her sister's "betrayal" and thought of what she would do if she knew about Audrey's more hidden life. She didn't think Shadow was that bad, and she didn't blame her for wanting to rebel. If Shadow was a blood traitor, then what was she? She shifted uncomfortably. "Everyone deserves to make their own choices. Shadow is a smart girl, and she won't get herself into a bad situation. You just have to realize that Shadow isn't you. She's going to make her own choices, no matter what you do to try and change her mind." she sad, with an understanding smile.

This is always where things got strange. Penny knew, deep down, that Audrey was better than the society they had found themselves placed in, just as she felt wrong for subscribing to their beliefs. The difference was, Audrey was more rebellious, and acted as though it were okay for someone to break free. Penelope couldn't believe that - she had heard too much of the Malfoys. Out of terror, she did her best to belong to the pureblood society before someone figured out her reluctance and she was turned out into the cold. And she was fearful for the same fate for her friend.

She squirmed a bit. "But, if our parents find out, she'll be completely disowned. Our whole family will suffer, our gold will dwindle, my parents will struggle, and who knows how she and I will have to compensate for it. I'm just trying to show her the practicality of her situation. Is expressing herself really more important than staying alive and comfortable?"

Audrey sighed and let the conversation slide, compensating with understanding nods and the quite reply, "She'll come to her senses." And then searched for something else to discuss.

"so anything else you want to do while we're out tomorrow?" Audrey asked, smiling. She knew that was one of the more off limit subjects between her and get best friend, and she wasn't in the mood to press the issue. They had their own opinions. Audrey had always been the rebelious one, and she didn't expect a huge change.

Penny wobbled her head, letting out a small breath of relief as the subject was allowed to fall to the wayside, and she felt much better now that it was over. her heart beat slowed and the pulse deep in her skull relaxed. She was really tired of these problems causing a wedge between herself and her friends.

"Um, lunch, obviously. Shopping. We should probably look into accessories for the debutante ball coming up." She nodded.

Audrey smiled thinking about the ball to come. But then, an equally important topic came to mind. "Penny," Audrey asked with enthusiasm, "what on earth are we doing for spring break?" She remembered, smiling widely.

Audrey hoped that Penny didn't have something else to do. Audrey was in serious need of a vacation, and she couldn't think of anyone better to come with her. Most of the reeason behind that is because vacations are meant to be relaxing, and anyone besides Penny would annoy her before the week was up, she thought humorously.

Audrey suddenly lit up with some sort of inspiration and Penny thought about it. "Hmm... I don't know yet. I'm sure my parents have some sort of plans - dinner with the elite, shopping, social calls, visits to Gran, you know, the usual." She sighed, but then sat up a lit, brightening. "But I'm sure there will be some time for ourselves! Perhaps Mum will apparate us to the beach or something. That'd be really wonderful - some time to actually relax on vacation!"

Audrey smiled at the thought of the beach. It sounded wonderful. Audrey loved winter, but the thought of tanning and warm weather brought a smile to her face. She yawned and stretched. "Sounds fantastic." She said, dreamily. "Maybe we should head to bed. Long day tomorrow, you know." She said, with a tired smile.

Penny nodded, pleased to have given a suggestion that seemed worthy of attention. She was always afraid she would be much too boring for her wilder friend. So, this small success was important to her. The thought of sleep was wonderful - she nodded, the yawn catching to her too. "That sounds brilliant." She smiled. "Thanks for the girl talk."
