Welcome to Potter's Army

We have been a Harry Potter Roleplaying site since 2007. If you're an old member we hope you come check out the discord link provided below. And if you're looking for a new roleplaying site, well, we're a little inactive. But every once and a while nostalgia sets in and a few of our alumni members will revisit the old stomping grounds and post together. Remember to stay safe out there. And please feel free to drop a line whenever!

What’s Happening?
Since every few months or so a few of our old members get the inspiration to revisit their old stomping grounds we have decided to keep PA open as a place to revisit old threads and start new ones devoid of any serious overarching plot or setting. Take this time to start any of those really weird threads you never got to make with old friends and make them now! Just remember to come say hello in the chatbox below or in the discord. Links have been provided in the "Comings and Goings" forum as well as the welcome widget above.

Word Limits in Classes... Empty Word Limits in Classes...

Post by Alexander Greengrass Sat Apr 14, 2012 1:26 pm

Okay so most people do not post in the classes and i am not saying there is only one reason to this or that i know them all but i know my reason. I'm a very busy person off of the site thankks to work and school and i don't exactly have the time to read the 1000+ word post people love to post and then three more after the first. So i was thinking that i would be in the best intrest of everyone on the site if there was a word limit of like 100- 300 words per post in the Classes alone. I know that it would make it easier on me to post when i cant be on for multipule days in a row because of rl. I have already talked to Jess and he told me to post my ideas here and see what everyone else thinks about this idea. So please comment with your oppinions..

Word Limits in Classes... Empty Re: Word Limits in Classes...

My own opinion is that it's a sound idea, if kept only to classes. Overly excessive posts are quite unnecessary in the classroom, and it would make life a fair bit easier when it comes to replying in them

However, I also don't want the long posters to just say "Well sod this" and just not post in the classes. Of course it shouldn't be the choices of a few that limit many, so nothing will happen until some sort of agreement is reached here.

Also, remember. If you hate this idea, but don't tell us that, then you've no right to get angry if this goes ahead, similarly for anyone who supports the idea but doesn't show it. The only way to really have the right to be miffed about the way something swings is if you get involved in it.

I will say yes to this when people begin bringing their personal plots into the classroom. This is something we all need to take note of because we treat the classes as something different to actual rp and if you read, we all conduct ourselves a little differently and some of us - myself included - fail to post there because of the boredom the classes bring. Nothing happens to forward our plots so why bother, right? Wrong, I think we need to start bringing the plots in more than anything. I think you're a bloody genius if you can spout out a grand about a class because they really do bore people. I don't actually think we should limit the posts, especially not if the reason is that it takes forever to read. I don't read everything in big massive posts if they don't directly appeal to my character, or at least I used to not. I've learnt that it is important to read all of it lest you want to miss something. I think if we put a word limit on posts in classes because of the fact that it takes a long time to read then it promotes laziness that will leak into normal threads. So, I think no, I don't fancy this. We should post to what we are comfortable to, regardless of whether that's 150 or 1,500.

I agree with Eli.

We should be able to post with however long we are comfortable with. Some posts may be too long and even if they take forever to read, that really isn't a good reason to put a limit of what we post in classes. Like Eli said some of us incorporate our plots into our posts in the class replies, but that's to keep it from being all that boring. I'm one of those people that don't post in classes because of the boredom they cause. I don't think this would be the best idea.

Word Limits in Classes... Empty Re: Word Limits in Classes...

Here is my thought, from my experience as an admin, i've noticed some folks prefer longer posts and some prefer shorter ones. I see no fault in either, really. each player, as long as they make the minimum, have the right to make their posts whatever length they want. I see absolutely no reason why we need to make word maximums.

So, from my position as head admin, I do not want to create word maximums. Minimums seem to be necessary to keep the site from having a lot of spamming, but I do oppose a maximum.

From a player standpoint, I try to honor, as best I know how, the player I'm rp'ing with. For someone to say they dont want to take the time to read my post would suggest to me that perhaps I am not the right player for them. If the player you're interacting with makes posts, generally, that are either too short or too long for your own personal preferences, then my thought is that you do have the right to seek out a player with a style much closer to what you're looking for in an rp experience.

So, no. I do not want to see word maximums imposed here on PA. Bottom line.

I don't really have a problem with long posts unless there is like 3 or 4 in a row that i have to read before i post.. then if i do no read the whole thing i have no clue whats going on in the thread this was just a sugestion for classes to make it less time consumeing.

I have read all that has been said and I agree with Khaat, minimum word count is good maximum is a bit silly if your in class and rping with that person make the time to read it I'm sure the other person or persons will understand. Classes are not there to be rushed each person waits on the next.

But, Cecilia, I guess that's my point. Some people who write long posts don't like shorter IC posts. Their style is making longer ones, just as yours might be making posts that are not that long. It doesn't make either of them wrong. Just a difference in style. Much like, perhaps, your favorite color and mine might be different. And if thats what they do, then it isn't a matter of a post length that is an exception. Its more of knowing the style of the person you're playing with and being able to deal with their styles, whatever that is.

If you're rp'ing with someone who makes long posts and it just isn't something you like, you honestly don't have to continue rp'ing with them, unless theyre one of the professors in a class your character is taking, or an employer in a job he or she might have. No one deliberately writes to make their fellow players uncomfortable or perhaps feeling disrespected, so I don't think, if you're writing w/ a long poster, that he or she is doing anything different than they would do anywhere else. And if that is an instructor, sometimes a longer post is necessary for a professor to use. You also always have the option of attending a different class with a professor who writes shorter posts, if that is the issue.

Or--perhaps your character needs to do an internship? Might provide you with more action and less classroom time. Perhaps that might be a thought for you. Just a suggestion.

I don't think i made my self clear enough a moment ago.. I don't mind Long post ins a 1 on 1 thread or even if its 3 people in a thread but when its a mass thread and some posts a long post then 3 or more others fallow thats when it gets harder to beable to post there.
