Without waiting to see Cecilia’s response, Amelia had shifted herself off of her desk and moved behind it to sit in the chair designed specifically for that purpose. From this distance, Amelia felt a little bit more calm, but the tension that had been building in her since the beginning of class and which had heightened considerably since Cecilia’s entrance was still not dissipated. From her peripheral vision, Amelia saw Ambrosa stand up and move over toward the younger Ravenclaw girl, supposedly to give her the instructions Amelia had denied.
Well at least that’s settled, Amelia thought, grateful for the more understanding student who could deal with the situation with more grace than she had. Amelia still didn’t believe she was wrong to ask Cecilia to fix her own problems – afterall, she had created them by being late – but she did acknowledge that the stress of the first day of class had made her more snappish than perhaps she should have been. And her natural personality had probably had a bit to do with it as well…
To give herself something to do, Amelia pulled out the attendance list and began checking off the names of the students that had arrived. The class was well-attended overall, though many who were there were not participating, but there were still several empty boxes when Amelia had finished the list. With a quick glance up to check that her students were still working, Amelia pulled out a stack of parchment and a quill to write notes to those students who had not attended class, reminding them that their class standing would be in jeopardy if they did not elect to attend class regularly.
Just as she was finishing the last letter, Ambrosa announced that she was finished with her potion. “Just a moment,” Amelia said, taking a few more seconds to sign and seal the letter and place it with the others in a pile in the outbox on her desk. Then, pushing back from the mahogany desk, Amelia stood and crossed the room to Ambrosa’s cauldron.
Amelia hovered over the potion, taking in the scent. She could identify many of the ingredients, even though they were now one swirling blue concoction, and Amelia nodded approvingly at the sight of the potion. Pulling a flask from the pocket of her jacket, Amelia extracted a sample of the potion with her wand and corked it into the flask.
“I trust you kept record of the ingredients and their purpose?” Amelia inquired, fully believing Ambrosa capable of following her instructions. “This potion looks to be satisfactory, and I commend you on your use of Valerian and Moly. They are lesser-known ingredients, but you used them appropriately. 10 points to Ravenclaw for a successful finished product, and there will be 5 more if your potion creates the desired effect when we test it at the end of the period,” Amelia added, slipping the flask back into her pocket.
