Welcome to Potter's Army

We have been a Harry Potter Roleplaying site since 2007. If you're an old member we hope you come check out the discord link provided below. And if you're looking for a new roleplaying site, well, we're a little inactive. But every once and a while nostalgia sets in and a few of our alumni members will revisit the old stomping grounds and post together. Remember to stay safe out there. And please feel free to drop a line whenever!

What’s Happening?
Since every few months or so a few of our old members get the inspiration to revisit their old stomping grounds we have decided to keep PA open as a place to revisit old threads and start new ones devoid of any serious overarching plot or setting. Take this time to start any of those really weird threads you never got to make with old friends and make them now! Just remember to come say hello in the chatbox below or in the discord. Links have been provided in the "Comings and Goings" forum as well as the welcome widget above.

Teaching Styles Empty Teaching Styles

Post by Jess Potter Tue Aug 09, 2011 7:36 am

So, like I said in my PM which I'm about to send you all (This had to come first so I could embed a link Razz ) we want to avoid having 5 versions of the stern teacher, or five versions of the evil teacher.

To avoid this, I'd love it if you all were to just discuss your teaching style here. While I don't want to see anyone changing their characters completely and making them something you no longer wish to play, it'd be great if you were to just discuss how you may make your teacher not be a carbon copy of someone else's.

Of course there's gonna be overlapping, and you might all ignore this. I'm cool with that, but keep in mind that this is a job, and if you're not working at a satisfactory level, we may be forced to request your resignation. (Don't worry, we'd try and work out any problems with your first, you wont just receive a "You're fired" PM completely out of the blue.)
But I don't like doing that, so you've little to worry about there.

There's also some changes in Hogwarts this year which will be discussed further in this forum, so make sure that if you come on and see that there's new replies here, you at least pop into a topic and say "I understand." or "I don't care" just so i know not to chase you up with 1000r7985832d PMs.

Yes, that is a number, thoust shalt not question thy admin!

Razz

So yes, post here and tell us about your intended teaching style, what sort of ways you plan on running classes, and what activities you have planned. Remember that the wackier the class is, the more fun it will be. Sitting down and taking notes has been found to be dull. If you're strapped for ideas, or aren't sure how to make your classes fun, i know for a fact that Damon Ambrozje posted a brilliant guide last year for staff members, worth a read from each of you.

I mean, if Hogwarts was filled with Snapes, you'd hate it (until the last book... *Tear wells in eye*) so that's why Rowling had a mix of teachers, the imbecilic Lockhart, Abysmal Quirrel, Stern but kind hearted McGonagal... trelawney, can i even think of a name for her? You get the picture, and if you can't think of your own teaching style, maybe even look at taking aspects (not copying -_-) of their teaching styles and incorporating them into your own.

Hope you're all well, and I look forward to seeing your classes!
Jess.

Teaching Styles Empty Re: Teaching Styles

Post by Amelia Lyons Tue Aug 09, 2011 1:51 pm

Amelia is mostly going to be trying to be stern and earn respect, but she's going to have to struggle against the fact that she is so young, and that most of the people who knew her when she was in Hogwarts have become her students in only a 4 month turnaround time. She also gets nervous easily, and her public speaking skills aren't always the greatest, so I will probably play on that. I am going to try to work on her confidence as she takes on this teaching role.

Amelia is a brand new teacher, and a control freak, so she is going in with the mentality that she can and will have order in her classroom. She will probably struggle a lot when this image does not parallel reality, so essentially, Amelia will be the teacher that is still coming to terms with herself and trying not to get pulled under the tide, while simultaneously trying to share her knowledge and be a foil to the 'holier-than-thou' teaching style of the last Potions Master.

Is that enough of a description?

Ginny's gonna have a strict but fair teaching style. Since her time at Hogwarts, she has somewhat hated Slytherins so that'll be something to show when they're misbehaving. She is quick to take points away and give detentions. She does not allow any back talking. She kicks kids out for doing things like that and doesn't count them in her attendance. She is always willing to help her students with anything. Not just classes; problems etc.

I guess I am the fossil amongst these people. I do hope I do not have to describe my teaching style as it it always the same and I have a 3 year archive to prove how I teach, but if necessary... do give me a info about that and I shall, well, write something Smile

i fully intend to for michael to be michael. quirky, wise, nicknaming every student he has, humor, fun, but he will be insistant that they learn. He is much more interested that they have hands on experience rather than classroom or book learning. i look for him to have them outside, on the grounds, and since part of the cirriculum calls for him to do apparating lessons and portkeying lessons, they will need to be permitted field trips off grounds in order to accomplish this. either that or some lackey of grindlewalds will need to chaparone. one or the other. either way, it promises to be anything but traditional. Make sense?

Grindelwald's men will have to accompany you, particularly for Portkeys, they're very Ministry operated.

Ummm... this may be off topic, but can Wilson kick those people out? And can he be arrogant and House/Doyle-like to him? Very Happy
