Welcome to Potter's Army

We have been a Harry Potter Roleplaying site since 2007. If you're an old member we hope you come check out the discord link provided below. And if you're looking for a new roleplaying site, well, we're a little inactive. But every once and a while nostalgia sets in and a few of our alumni members will revisit the old stomping grounds and post together. Remember to stay safe out there. And please feel free to drop a line whenever!

What’s Happening?
Since every few months or so a few of our old members get the inspiration to revisit their old stomping grounds we have decided to keep PA open as a place to revisit old threads and start new ones devoid of any serious overarching plot or setting. Take this time to start any of those really weird threads you never got to make with old friends and make them now! Just remember to come say hello in the chatbox below or in the discord. Links have been provided in the "Comings and Goings" forum as well as the welcome widget above.

Weighing of the Wands - Page 3 Empty Re: Weighing of the Wands

Post by Headmistress Anais Benoit Sun Nov 28, 2010 5:28 am

Anais went to Selene, who appeared to be having a bit of a mini-meltdown over her wand. She laid a gentle hand on Selene's shoulder. "Mon Petit, all will be well. Wait and see. I am sorry. I did look over your wand, and I did not see anything. This is precisely why we have a wandmaker to do the weighing. We certainly do not want you or anyone else to be wounded from a faulty weapon. These things to happen in the course of the natural performance of wood. We will simply get you a new one."

Anais looked to the wandmaker. "What have you found, Mr. Elldir? Show me what I missed when I looked at the wand myself only this morning. This wand has sentimental value to Selene. I trust you are a wandmaker of sufficient skill that you can either repair the wand or make something that meets my satisfaction, Oui?"

Weighing of the Wands - Page 3 Empty Re: Weighing of the Wands

Post by Thaorson Kam Elldir Sun Nov 28, 2010 5:48 am

Thaor felt insulted when Selene threatened him of damaging her wand. He would never harm a wand, even if it was made by some no-name. If you look here, he said, pointing to the hairline crack on the wand. You can see a very small crack, if you look to the top of the crack, you can see a very small hole, consistent with a bowtruckle beak. They like to defend their home trees when someone comes to take wood from it. The damage to this wand is no ones fault, except the maker, whom ever made this wand ignored the bowtruckle hole, and therefore, gave you a bad wand. Thaor said, with a look towards Selene.

I could make a new wand for her. But fix this one, I will not do. I did not create this wand, so I do not know it's strength, not to mention, it would never be fully fixed, just temporarily. Thaor said looking at Anais.

Thaor turned to Khaat, Mrs. Lupin, I'm sure you are aware of my, for lack of a better term, "status" policy? Thaor asked Khaat.

Weighing of the Wands - Page 3 Empty Re: Weighing of the Wands

Post by Khaat Lupin Sun Nov 28, 2010 2:55 pm

"I am," Khaat looked at Thaor quietly, suppressing her rage at the man. "Status policy" was his windowdressing for not wanting to make wands for anyone who wasn't a pureblood. She hated prejudice about such things. It was one of the things that had made her so eager to fight for the elimination of the dark arts. Perhaps someday Thaor would make a misstep and find himself before her in the Wizengamot. She would welcome a chance to incarcerate him amongst all the other prejudiced witches and wizards, even if it meant every dark wizard in England.

"You also remember that you were contracted to provide wands, at reasonable payment, for any champion who needed one. It was part of the agreement you made with the Minister for your well compensated services for this tournament. If you feel unable to fullfill your duties to their full completion, you say so now! I will void your contract so that you will be free to leave."

She wasn't giving him additional funding above and beyond the standard cost of a wand. She'd be happy to take the wand to Ollivanders herself and ask them to handle the matter, just as they had done for centuries. Thaor might be good, but he wasn't that good that it merited blackmail. And as far as she was concerned, inflating the cost of a wand because Selene wasn't pureblood was outrageous. No, Khaat was the chief official here, and she was holding her ground.

"I will take the wand myself, Mr. Elldir," Khaat ordered, holding her hand out for the wand.

Thaor took a step closer to Khaat, and whispered into her ear so no one else could hear, "Have a talk with your father, before you get to angry with me." Thaor took a step back, and said I am fully aware of my contract, and I Will abide by it. Thaor said with a non-sincere smile. Your new wand, what wood, and core would you like it to be? Thaor asked Selene, taking out a notepad and a quill. I shall make it for you, at regular prices. Thaor said, with a glance towards Khaat.

Weighing of the Wands - Page 3 Empty Re: Weighing of the Wands

Post by Selene Brun Sun Nov 28, 2010 8:26 pm

Selene sniffed, and stared at the man who the healer Khaat obviously disliked. She watched as they fought over the wand for a bit, something about a status policy? So what, this man wouldn't make her a new wand because she was a halfblood? That made indignation rise up in Selene like never before. What kind of man was this? She was half afraid for him to even be touching her wand, it was probably true, he HAD broken it, all because she wasn't a pureblood! What of these other two? Were they purebloods, is that why there was nothing wrong with their wands now, but there was something wrong with hers?!

Selene glared at the man for a long moment, keeping her eyes level with him. "'aven't you already looked at my wand? I want eet to be just like zat one. Ze tail 'air of a Unicorn zat eez found in ze forest behind my house in France. Ze wood eez made of the vine of a rare tree in Africa." She said glaring at him. "I wouldn't 'ave needed a new wand.. but 'as it eet eez. Ze Vine you can get anywhere I suppose, but ze tail 'air 'as to be from ZAT Unicorn." She smiled slightly at him. "'e doesn't like to get caught." She stared at the man, and then returned to her headmistresses side, staring forlornly at her now broken wand.

Weighing of the Wands - Page 3 Empty Re: Weighing of the Wands

Post by Jess Potter Sun Nov 28, 2010 8:44 pm

"Thaor," Jess piped up, choosing to ignore the annoying headmaster. "Forgive me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the wand choose the wizard?" He asked in a clearly insincere tone, he knew wandlore, he'd partially taught it in Charms, and he'd learnt it through his time at Hogwarts.

"As such, doesn't it seem foolish to ask her for wand material and core, when most certainly she'll be disappointed?" He asked, his opinion of the man's credibility disappearing almost immediately. "Unless of course you've found a way to bend the laws of magic, forgive me, in that case," He said, this time the sincerity, though just as fake, sounding slightly more apparent.

Weighing of the Wands - Page 3 Empty Re: Weighing of the Wands

Post by Khaat Lupin Sun Nov 28, 2010 9:18 pm

"Jess," Khaat frowned, "this is not the time nor the place for wandlore. It seems as though as Selene's wand worked well for her prior to this hairline crack. And it is a reasonable question to ask the champion what her interests and preferences are in a wand if it is going to be made especially for her, as this wand was. The rules of the cup surrounding the wand is that they are permitted the wand of their choosing. She can specify what she would, ideally, like in a wand. It is up to the wandmaker to tell her whether or not a wand can be made to suit her to that specification."

She looked at Thaor. "I presume you will let me know what you end up doing for her. As well as when the wand itself is finished. Madame Benoit and I will work out the costs."

OOC: you are correct, jess, according to canon re: wandlore. however, we have, on this site allowed players to specify the kind of wood they want, the core element, the length, etc. thaor was correct, technically, in how we have allowed players to select wands here.

(OOC- Thank you Khaat, yes Jess, I know this. But on PA everyone just chooses. so i was continuing with that theory.)

Thaor listened to Selenes description of her new wand. This wouldn't be easy, but he was up for a challenge. With your permission Ms. Brun, and yours Ms. Benoit, I can use Leglimency to look into your mind, to see exactly what the unicorn looks like, and where the forest is, and I can do the same for the tree. Thaor said with a smile.

Thaor ignored Jess as Khaat already answered him. I shall have this wand finished by the end of this week. Thaor said with a nod towards Khaat.

[OOC: You all are correct on wandlore, except for one important fact, Ron breaks his wand, and gets a new one made... it happens many times throughout the book, that when a wand is broken, a new one is made.. often times, if it is at all possible, with the same elements in it that the prior wand had]

Selene glared at the man for a long moment. Again it was a, Adults know best moment, and she just hoped that it wouldn't be that way when it came to the first task. She would like to have a say in how things were run anyway. If not run, then at least let her have a say in SOMETHING... she was getting more and more angry with the adults because they were talking at her, not to her. And not even the others, her own headmistress hadn't said a word in her defense, but now.. this man, who didn't like her because she wasn't pureblood, wanted to look into her mind?!

Selene stood her ground. "I may as well take it to Olivanders..." She said suddenly. "I think I would like his services better. And besides, they are right.. the wand chooses the wizard.. and for all I know.. the same combination may not like me eh?" She said with a long glare at the man. "I appreciate you trying to do business with us.. and I thank you for your help in finding the crack, but I don't think that my wandmaker had anything to do with it. If I may please have it back so that I may mourn my old friend." She said holding out her hand for her now broken wand.

OOC: I never questioned that, Selene. If that could not occur, there would be no wandmaker in the first place in Rowling's realm. There really is no issue here. You will be allowed to specify your wand, as all the other players do.
