Jack followed Vito, and even though she was walking by him side by side, it felt as though she was following his lead, following his cue. She was not sure what she would have done if he had said no, he would not leave, she had to fend for herself... She probably would have apparated and become a full-out hermit, right then and there.
Fortunately, one thing had gone right that evening and she found herself relying on the man next to her as she walked towards a car. He was about to sit in the passenger seat and realized that there was no longer a driver. He took the driver's side and it looked incredibly awkward to see him do so. So awkward that Jack almost offered to drive, although in the emotional state she was, there was the possibility of her parking the car on some train tracks somewhere and driving the car off a cliff... Too bad it was not a Thunderbird... That would complete it.
She slipped into the passenger seat and ignored his comment about the man, nodding as though to acknowledge his existence as she buckled her seatbelt. She faced foward and let out a long, calming sigh.
She could make it.
At his words there was a faint flicker of a smile. Had he said it teasingly or even cheerfully, it would have probably made her storm out of the car. But the fact that his words sounded empty and fake made her feel like he had read her mind. She nodded and said in a light voice, "We should do this again..." The smile faded off her face... Because really, it was not all that funny...
