Robert got home just while they were setting the food on the sideboard, and he had gotten Andrew's note about Angus's mishap at the pub.
"I'm going to pop over to Angus's quick," Robert told Michael. "I'll be straight back in a few minutes."
"Take your time. There's plenty here," Michael told him. Robert snatched up his bag and apparated over to Angus's front door and knocked. Andrew answered the door.
"Oh, come on in. I was just setting supper out," Andrew said. "Ruby just brought the tray over."
"Well, I won't stay long. I got your note," Robert said. He went over and sat next to Angus. "So I heard you've got some magic abilities back."
"Yeah, but they're all buggared up," Angus replied.
"So what happened?" Robert asked. Angus recounted the tale, and Robert didn't seem a bit surprised. "Well, so the system is still working on regenerating. As it continues to heal, those wonky bits should decrease. Try it for me just once. Try to repeat your shield spell. Let's see if it works any better if you don't have to be so quick about it. Take your time."
Angus cast his shield spell with wandless magic, but the spell cast a lightning bolt that went both up his arm and also out from his hand and blew a hole in the floor.
"Alright," Robert said quickly, casting his own spell to nullify Angus's spell. "Well, that's enough of that. Let's be sure you weren't hurt."
"I'm fine, I think," Angus said. Robert touched his forehead.
"Same hand you used earlier?"
"Yeah," Angus said, a little rattled from jolting himself. Robert cast a couple spells to calm his body's escalated pulse and blood pressure from the jolt. He didn't find any real additional damage.
"You were lucky," Robert said. "I stopped it before it hurt you. I'll take care of that burn on your hand." He took Angus' hand in both of his and held it a moment while he healed the burn. "There. Better--unless you do it again."
"Well, now we have an extra entrance to the basement," Angus sighed, looking at the sofa that was hanging on the sagging and scorched floorboards at about a 45 degree angle, towards slipping into the hole, down to the basement.
"Yeah, that's not attractive, is it?" Robert said. "Let me help."
"I'll lend you a hand, Robert," Andrew said, drawing his wand. The two of them together cast a reparo spell to repair the hole in the floor and take away the burned floorboards. It soon looked as good as new.
"Much better," Angus said. "Thanks."
"Any time. So, you can stand, and your magic is starting to work, not well, but it works a little. Keep up the good work. Don't push it. Don't overdo yourself, and keep up the nutrition plan. It'll come."
"Before I have grandkids?" Angus asked.
"Patience," Robert cast him a smile. "You're actually healing ahead of schedule. Most people don't heal nearly this quickly from having an entire bodily system nearly obliterated. I think you should rest tonight."
"Andrew and I are going out for awhile," Angus said. "I won't be long. A couple hours at the most."
"Ah. I remember now. The calling hours for Ruby's and Jessie's father. Should I remind them?" Robert asked.
"Jessie may not know," Angus said. "And I don't know if Ruby remembers or not, but I am not going to force either of them to go. They may be better off if they don't, but someone from the family should be there, and I could be the closest they'll get. Even if I was the reason that he's in that casket."
"No, no. Don't let that get screwed up in your head. He's the reason he's there now. He tried to kill you, and you responded in self defense. That was entirely his own doing. And that family doesn't deserve any more explanation than that. Now, look, I don't want you going without a guard or two. I'll send Marcus with you and maybe one of Lee's men just to be on the safe side."
"Robert, the more I think about it, the more I think we should not remind Ruby. She's been upset enough lately. Let's let her enjoy working in the kitchen with Michael and the rest of them. That will steady her more than going to do this. This is something I can do for her that will close the book on that asshat."
"I understand. Alright, I'll send Marcus over in about 20 or 30 minutes?"
"That's fine," Angus said. Robert went back over to the main house and saw that supper was laid in the dining room.
"Thank goodness," Robert said, sending his bag to put itself away. "I'm starving. I was thinking of gnawing on the furniture."
"Well, it would be fiber, but not much for flavor," Michael laughed. "Come tuck in with the rest of us."
"Marcus," Robert said, "come see me after supper."
"Certainly," Marcus replied.
