"Introduce me to your friends, my dear," Edward said to Khaat. He had something in mind, she was sure.
"James, you know Jack and you know my friend Marcus. You don't know my friend, Jess, and my other friend. You may know his name. This is my very celebrated friend, Edward Donohue."
"Donohue!" James said. Even he knew the name and the legend of werewolf slayer Edward Donohue. She felt James' fear at the mention of his name. From where he stood, Edward saw the color drain from half the people in the room.
"I think there may be some people here that would like our discussion to be more private. So I think anyone who doesn't want to be caught up in our business should feel free to leave," Edward said. At that dismissal, Khaat and Marcus and Edward saw over half of the customers get up and quickly leave the pub. Even the mysterious Eve gathered up her tarot deck and put it in a drawstring pouch hanging from her waist.
"Who are you working for, James?" Khaat asked.
"Myself!" he said. "I work for no man. Why would you think so?"
"Because word on the street says you're desperate and you had to hook up with a real loser to feed yourself and the ones with you." James guffawed loudly.
"Well, you need better sources," he said. "And who am i supposed to be working for?"
"Supposedly you took a job as the brawn for a man in Paris who can't tie his shoes without help."
"I work with him, not for him. Let's be clear," James hissed at her angrily. "I work for no human. And if he doesn't mind his p's and q's, I'll eliminate him. Mark my words."
"I don't know," Khaat said. "Neither of you are smart enough to get much of anywhere. What makes you think he's worth your time?"
"He isn't," James said. "However, the payment is something I'm interested in."
"And what do you have to do to earn it?" she asked. "What does he have that you could possible want?"
"You, Sweet Cheeks," he said, taking it upon himself to swipe a prolonged, forced kiss from her. She was completely disgusted. "He gives me you."
"You'd have to get past my father first, and my husband, and a whole line of others," she said.
"Not a problem," he said, much too satisfied for her liking. They now knew his plan and Gelding's. Gelding had hired James to eliminate Robert and the rest of them, and in return, Gelding would give Khaat to James. It was exactly as they had surmised. Edward looked at Jack and Jesse. This was not the time for them to lose control. They were still outnumbered.
"Let me be clear, then," Edward said to James with complete fearlessness, "You lay one hand on any of the Lupins, and we will kill you and your entire pack. We won't have enough ash left of the entire pack to stuff the whole lot of you into an envelope. And we do have the manpower and the firepower to do it. Would you like me to demonstrate? Perhaps on her?" he leveled his wand at Eve.
