GENERAL APPEARANCE:
Lyle will be the first to own up the fact that he is not the most handsome man to ever grace the Earth. He is fully aware that Jane is the attractive one, Béatrice is the cold and distant one, and Lyle? He's the ambitious one, clever enough to stay out of trouble in the eyes of most and bright enough to be a professor, which he's very proud of (See History). But he has a sort of charm to him. His smile, though, sometimes too much or too ridiculous, is infectious, he gives the best looks - though only those closest to him can work out what they mean. He sometimes prefers to have conversations without words. This is partly because it proves how well he knows the other person, but it's also to do with the fact that, as smart as he considers himself to be, he can't always say exactly what he's feeling. But an eyebrow lift and a glance at Jane or Kasey, and they always know what he means.

He has dark brown hair, matching eyes, and a bit of a funny nose. It's a little rounded at the end, but it works, he thinks, as much as it can. He has parentheses around his mouth when he smiles, though one could argue that he sort of has dimples too if he's smiling quite widely. His eyes are the most expressive part of him, as he rarely uses his hands or the rest of his body to accompany his words.

Lyle does have his scruffy moments, but on the whole he looks a bit better when he's clean-shaven. It makes him look younger, as well, so he often goes for that. Now that he's past being 30, he jokes that he has to look as young as he can. Next to his youngest sister Jane, though, that's nearly impossible.

PERSONALITY:
Vine wood owners are said to seek out a higher purpose, and Lyle is no exception to that rule. He wants to invest students with the love of his chosen area - Literature - and is looking to get his third degree, this time with a focus in historical fiction and the research done to provide accuracy to the work. He floos down to Eastbourne five days a week to teach at the local college. So, although he isn't working in the world of magic, per se, after leaving his post at the Prophet, he still finds it incredibly helpful to have those abilities.

When corrected, Lyle can sometimes change track really suddenly. He thinks it helps him save face, even though he is perpetually caught in his act. He's known to hold grudges, but only against those who hit upon touchy subjects. Equally, he will rant, rave and rail against someone who was once his friend but has since betrayed him. His mannerisms and habits are very like his youngest sister and their friend Kasey. It's surprising, really, considering their middle sister Béatrice doesn't really fit into that puzzle very well.

Lyle takes to people who share his passions, who show him kindness when he is being awful, and who can understand those moments when he keeps quiet. He more often gets angry with himself than with other people, and often for failing to keep to the self-imposed deadlines he creates. He despises when people compare each other, and hates it all the more when people use him or his accomplishments in order to tear someone else down. It works particularly well when used against Béatrice and he'll tear into someone right back if they try it on her or anyone else.

The majority of the time, though, Lyle is funny and vivacious, and basically the excitement to Kasey's panic, and the spontaneous to Jane's focus on the future. It's generally something like this:

SPEAKING:
01. When Lyle really, really doesn't want to do something, he speaks more quickly, and repeats words over and over.
02. As stated above, he sometimes prefers not to speak, especially when he's in a sour mood. He doesn't stay in one for very long, admittedly, but he finds it difficult to find the right words to express why he's upset. He could go on for days about something he's passionate about - and will if he isn't stopped - but negative emotions aren't his favorite.
03. When just having a casual conversation, he's generally relaxed no matter the topic, and talks fairly slow. His voice isn't deep, unless he's angry. He doesn't like to do the whole shouting thing unless someone refuses to listen, so he usually just lets his tone get darker and darker until something snaps and he feels he has to yell at them.

He has less money than his youngest sister but that doesn't really bother him, as the majority of his spending goes towards education while hers goes towards material things he doesn't care so much about.


EARLY YEARS:
Lyle is the eldest of three children, and definitely has always stuck to his father's side. Simon taught at Beauxbatons, which Lyle was quite taken with the atmosphere of it all. His mother was often away to film for her television program, meaning that he trailed along to his father's lessons and although he didn't pay much attention at first, he became the watchful eye over Béatrice once she was old enough to come with him. He loved seeing people get excited to ask questions, and his father was incredibly good at engaging his students in the lectures.

Béatrice hated going, though, because Lyle knew information from sitting through the same lecture every term, and he prided himself on knowing all of the answers the students didn't. The students would start off seeming amused, but eventually it would irk them. In the end, though, it made them work harder and do better, so a few of them probably remember him fondly.

BEAUXBATONS YEARS:
It is embarrassing, sometimes, to admit that he went to the French school. But it wasn't only for girls, and he had basically grown up there. It is like an old home to him now, since he has no desire to teach magical subjects. It helped that his father taught Muggle Studies. As much as Lyle could appreciate the other subjects, and although he is proud to say that he can do certain spells with wandless and nonverbal magic, he doesn't necessarily feel the need for it. He can get on just as well without it. He kept up with his studies anyway, though.

Lyle didn't fully fit in at school, but he didn't care very much about that. His siblings followed him to school after a time, and in his sixth year he took his OWLs, only to be given fairly disappointing results. They weren't bad enough to prevent him from continuing on in his studies, but it did give him the kick he needed and helped him decide on the path he wanted to take after graduation.

ADULTHOOD:
Lyle started with a degree in English Literature, and took up writing for the Daily Prophet while working on getting his masters in the same subject. He took the classes part-time and took much longer than he wanted to to complete it. He never worried about whether or not he should be finding someone to settle down with. He looked after Kasey's kids so often that it hardly made a difference that he was technically alone. He's Uncle Lyle, and Auntie Jane seems him almost every day, so he's never been lonely.

He did grow tired of writing for the prophet after a little over six years, and had been considering leaving. About six months ago, he applied for a teaching position at Eastbourne college and was accepted. He's incredibly busy because he's working on earning his doctorate, which he intends to focus on entirely during the summer months. Recently, however, he met someone he is actually rather curious about. It will sound cliche, because it is, really, but Lyle met James at a pub one night, and although the younger man seemed a bit unsure of himself at first, the smooth finish is what really won him over in the end. So Lyle isn't sure what the plan is, and feels guilty for being so busy and complicated, but he likes the idea of it so far.
