Cherries Are Ripe Empty Cherries Are Ripe

Post by Hallie Cooper Tue Aug 05, 2014 5:49 pm

Two weeks. They'd been apart one week and Hallie was already deeply missing her husband. She missed coming home from work to a cooked dinner, being affectionately kissed on the forehead as she sat down at the table. She missed the smell of cigarettes, sure she would chastise him for it but the smell reminded her of him, of her dear husband. Of course she'd never admit that part to him, after all if they were having a child together Hallie hoped their son, or daughter, didn't acquire such a nasty habit from their Father.

Hallie had agreed with Theodore that she'd be away for only a week, but after a week Hallie was still at a bit of a lose end as to what to do about her marriage. She loved him. She hated to love him. His family was everything Hallie thought wrong with the world, the name Rookwood made her blush shamefully whenever she signed a document at work but the fact was no matter what her name was, no matter what his name was she loved him. Unconditionally? Hallie wasn't sure, but she was in love with a man who she was always arguing with. Since they re-did their vows after their last argument the pair had been civil with each other, to anybody it would appear the perfect marriage, but of course it wasn't long before the pair hit turbulence. Turbulence in the form of Hallie becoming a step-Mother.

She couldn't believe he hadn't told her, maybe if they'd met in a natural environment and not something engineered by the ministry they would have had a proper relationship. One where things would build up, there would have been early excitement and electricity as opposed to early mid-marriage arguments. Either way his child would have eventually become a part of her life and Hallie only had one option: to love her as her own. Regardless of her biological mother she would become her child's sister and she knew everything it mean't to be a big sister.

Saturday they'd agreed to meet. Theodore was the last in the restaurant and had agreed to close for the manager allowing him and his wife to have a little private chat on neutral ground. Not that it was neutral, it was Theodore's work place after all, but it was a place one could leave without many repercussions if necessary.

Hallie's belongings were still at Maura and Ryo's. They had told her to stay as long as she needs and Hallie felt it best to sort things with Theodore then move her things out as opposed to the opposite. What if her and Theodore decided for a divorce? She would have simply had to move all of her belongings back into their house, unless she went to Grimmauld Place or her Mothers. Most likely that would be her decision if Hallie was walking out with a divorce on her hands. Already she felt as though she was overstaying her welcome, invading the newly wedded parents privacy. Ryo and Maura were raising a child, they didn't need another one popping out in a few months time to overcrowd the house.

'Hello?' Hallie called out, entering Babbity Rabbity, her hair in a bun atop the back of her head and her wand stashed into her handbag - she'd chosen to wear a summers dress and there was hardly any place to store her wand there.

Cherries Are Ripe Empty Re: Cherries Are Ripe

Post by Theodore Rookwood Tue Aug 05, 2014 9:32 pm

One week had collapsed into two in the midst of juggling work and bringing up a child. It wasn’t something that Theodore had ever felt he’d be good at – both subjects, in fact – but he’d somehow managed to get his act together and he found he’d neither mucked something up nor killed his child so, for all intents and purposes, he’d been doing well. Nevertheless, there was one aspect of his life which had gone unattended in the space of the fourteen days and that was his marriage which had suffered with the sudden introduction of the latter of the aforementioned subjects. For you see, the child which Theodore was raising was not theirs. Esme Carolynn Rookwood was his, in fact. In this marriage, solely his – both to his detriment and elation.

If there was one thing that Theodore had been surprised about in the two weeks that had passed then it was how easy it had been to look after her. She wasn’t a high maintenance baby – being as she was quite a bit older than the infant that would all too soon enter his life, borne out of his marriage. She had certain desires, certain preferences, but Theodore learnt to dance to her tune and in turn she found her even keel and moved in his peculiar circles also. The two had come to understand each other and they’d gathered themselves a routine. Theodore had never gotten around to building up the nursery. Instead, once Esme was snoozing she was set down in his bed and he’d join her eventually after a few more drinks. Then, the pair would slumber away, wake up at Esme’s behest and their day would start with breakfast and then she’d be taken off to her auntie’s house before he went to work.

Adriana had been the biggest help of all. Theodore still hadn’t entirely gotten out of her what had precipitated her rapid change of heart on the subject of things less than pure. She had fallen in love with the little girl, though, and anything that made it easier for Theodore to juggle his life and his livelihood would do him nicely. Adriana had recently, however, upset the apple cart with whatever had created that change in her and Theodore found her, within the last week or so, taking up residence in the spare bedroom on the upper floor. Then it had been a case of making three breakfasts and once again dealing with his sister in the mornings. He didn’t mind it. In fact, he was grateful for the company. In truth, they’d never had a better relationship.

Work had never been better, either. Theodore had been thrown into the role of head chef when the former went onto paternity leave with no showing of returning and he ran the kitchen methodically and, needless to say, well. There wasn’t much to complain about in Theodore and it was truly something he’d begun to love. Still, he felt as though all of the apprenticeships he’d done in his late teens were beginning to go to waste. There was part of him that was beginning to miss the Ministry – and the law unto it. That was part of what made his steady relationship betwixt the Order and the Death Eaters equal parts terrifying and enthralling. He was weary though. Weary of the fight. Part of him just wanted to go back to basics, go back to law. Retrain.

Hallie was meant to be coming though, after closing. Theodore hadn’t had chance to make up any dinner for them by the time closing came around, either. There was part of him that was still a little irate. Nevertheless, he was willing to have dinner – or meet, whatever it was – and that was a start. He brought dessert, at least, and set it out on the table. Something within him was making him feel a little bit impatience. He supposed that, looking at the clock clicking away on the wall, it was because at this point in time he would’ve been home making dinner with Esme while Adriana read her magazines or the newspaper, beginning to make her way through her first bottle of wine for the evening. Even if he was lingering on to see Hallie, he still didn’t like it.

“Hiya love,” Theodore called out to Hallie as he made his way into the restaurant. “How’s your week been?”

Cherries Are Ripe Empty Re: Cherries Are Ripe

Post by Hallie Cooper Wed Aug 06, 2014 5:55 pm

(OOC: Figured i'd refer to the title of the thread. Can cherries even be unripe? I'm not really an expert with food hah!)

Her blue eyes caught sight of a table quite close to the kitchen door. It was laid with two saucers, each home to a slice of cherry cheesecake. The biscuit base looked light and the cherries just ripe, exactly how Hallie liked it. In fact that is the only way she enjoyed the dessert. Hallie was more of a strawberry person, always had been, probably always would be but her sweet tooth would willing extend to cherries. Ripe cherries.

'It's been okay.' Hallie began, dropping back onto the floor allowing it to lean against the table leg before she too sat herself down. 'It's been busy, what with working extra hours, doing work for the Order and then having to do the cooking and laundry at Maura's. Oh, and I also found out that Sophia Granger has been letting Henry Yewbeam stay with her.'

'I don't know what she was thinking. He's a death eater, no doubt trying to snoop around for things, not to mention he'll probably have her leg cut off-'

She glanced to Theodore as an after thought, 'Sorry', before continuing and digging a fork into her cheesecake.

'But it's ridiculous. Apparently he's changed, he's trying to be good, he is leaving the death eater.' She emptied the fork into her mouth, crunched on the cheesecake then swallowed. 'Is she stupid?'

When she'd heard the story that Maura had walked in on Sophia and Henry having a deep conversation Hallie had erupted into a rant, much like the one she'd just repeated to Theodore but with a lot more detail. Yewbeam was still a touchy subject when it came to her husband, perhaps it shouldn't but the fact that it was Theodore's Father whose orders Henry had been acting on haunted them still.

'Anyway.' Hallie sighed, dressing her face with a wide smile and looking up at Theodore. 'How have you been?'

Cherries Are Ripe Empty Re: Cherries Are Ripe

Post by Theodore Rookwood Wed Aug 06, 2014 6:30 pm

(OOC: You don't want to try unripe cherries. They're unbelievably tart.)

Sitting down to dessert, Theodore didn’t think he’d be presented with the information that he’d been looking for since Christmas had come and gone. He had wanted to get even with Henry. As it turned out, it appeared his wife would be the one handing him over the tools with which to dispose of him. Theodore shuffled a little in his seat, beholding Hallie gently as she complained to him. He couldn’t help but feel his lips twitch but as he looked at her, he found that he almost wanted to kiss her – and thank her for making it his business, suddenly, again, to look after her. Whether she’d realised it or not, though.

“It’s been going well then,” he replied with a smile, cutting off a piece of cheesecake. He stabbed at it with the prongs of his fork and brought it to his lips, taking it onto his tongue and feeling for the sharpness of the cherries, followed by the sweetness that came with it and the slight saltiness of the biscuit base. He’d given up smoking for the last week. He hated the strange interlude of unseasonable weather and the draughts he let into the house didn’t sit well with him given that he knew his daughter was there in amongst it, playing on the rug in the living room or wandering around, waiting for him to take her up and give her a bath. She was in the way of that. So, with little ceremony, he stopped.

It was driving him mad, mind you. He’d gotten the works, having not realised how dependent on them he’d become over the years. Irritability was at the maximum level but being focused on the job and replacing his breaks with shorter intervals so that he didn’t have time enough to have a cigarette, seemed to ease the symptoms. It was when he was cooking at home that he missed them most. That had seen him move from beer to red wine, however. Adriana drank it by the bucket load and though you’d never remove the alcoholic from the Rookwood and vice versa, you could take the smoker away and whilst temporarily the drinking had increased, Theodore was at least taking a step in the right direction.

“Oh, um,” Theodore set his fork down. “My sister is living with us, at the moment. Adriana has had a row with the firm so she’s bunking in the spare. I’d love to know what is going on but she’s not budging on the subject. I hope it’s alright. I’m waiting for one of my bonds to come out and then hopefully I’ll be able to lend her money and she’ll have her independence back. That’s the plan at least but she’s no bother. The only trouble she makes is for the bottle men.” He smirked a little.

“The thing is with Henry,” Theodore broached carefully. “No one ever stops being a Death Eater. If you stop being a Death Eater, you die.”

It was part of the reason why Theodore stuck so strongly to what he felt was his duty in that faction. He didn’t cheat for love of them or for love of the Order. He was with the Death Eaters to protect his cousin and in turn he was with the Order to please Hallie. He had his choices. Ultimately he made them both to save two women he loved. He didn’t trust Augustus and certainly he didn’t trust Kendall. To leave Athena alone would be to kill her. She didn’t have any love for the Death Eaters. He had to protect her. Henry, however… he’d happily through Henry to the wolves.

Cherries Are Ripe Empty Re: Cherries Are Ripe

Theodore's sister was staying there. That's all Hallie needed, another Rookwood, but at least Hallie would be on her home territory. No dark magic, no pure blood supremacy. Hopefully Theodore would be able to get clear of her quickly, the last thing Hallie needed was yet another person in her house along with Esme. None the less she couldn't help but smile at her husband. Behind the rigid Rookwood looks there was a kind heart there, a kind heart that had put himself out when his sister was in need. Maybe their families weren't that different after all?

The blonde gulped. Henry wasn't going to be leaving the death eaters, he wasn't going to change, he was dark through and through. Whatever happened to him Hallie didn't know, a part of her blamed herself for giving up on him, causing him to head into the realms of dark and dangerous antics. Maura had told her time after time Hallie hadn't caused anything. He was born that way, it had only been a matter of time before he headed over to the dark side. Not that this helped Hallie either, it made her feel naive to have ever loved and trusted the man.

'But. But that means, that means Sophia's in danger.' Hallie sprang from her seat and began to pace the length of the table back and forth whilst she spoke. 'If he's tricked her, fooled her into caring for him then she's in danger. He could be working for the death eaters, trying to sneak information of the Order out of her - heck she may even become a target for the death eaters!'

'We need to do something! We need to stop Henry!' For a moment her passionate blue eyes stared deep into Theodore's hoping for an answer but she was far too impatient and only seconds later Hallie continued to pace, thoughts racing through her mind completely distracted as to why she was here in the first place.

'I was supposed to arrest him. I was mean't to go to Eeylops Owl Emporium - he works there thanks to Sophia-' Hallie added, '-The file was on my desk. There is a warrant for his arrest, he'll be sent to Azkaban for not following the marriage law.'

Hallie's breathing slowed and she stopped walking, her hand resting on the head of her chair. 'It'll be fine.' She told herself more than Theodore. 'I'll get straight onto that tomorrow. I'm not supposed to be working but I need to do this, I need to protect Sophia. It'll be.'

'It'll be fine.'
