“Uncle Charlie?”

From the wrought Goblin iron cage that held a particularly grumpy Romanian Longhorn dragon, Charlie Weasley looked up, unfurling his arms from where they had been set on his chest, glancing around to see his nephew, James Potter, loping towards him with an easy, genial smile on his face. Opening out his arms, Charlie met James half way, wrapping the young man up in a tight hug that he embraced brightly in return. It had been far too long since James had made the effort to go to the Romania Dragon Reserve. He could remember much of his time spent there, no doubt because the majority of that time was pleasant, not marred by upset or difficulty. Often, he could remember going to Romania to avoid all of that – and he was doing the same now.

After falling most spectacularly off of the sobriety wagon, James had woken up in St. Mungo’s rehabilitation wing not for the first time with fussing Healers all around him, badgering him with potions to get the drugs out of his system. Once he’d gotten that far it was a case of sitting through three days’ worth of counselling before they let him go, the Healers determined to figure out the why before giving him something to help him – ironically another drug, coffee. After loading him up with that and the potions he’d need to take to ensure he had everything out of him outside of St. Mungo’s, they sent him home and immediately James booked off time from work to go away. He needed Romania. He needed his uncle.

“What’s up little man?” Charlie inquired affectionately, ruffling the dark Potter hair atop James’ head.

“The worst,” James muttered, ducking out from underneath Charlie’s hand. “I crashed out again.”

Charlie’s face fell a little bit. “Oh, I’m sorry,” he said, falling into step with James as the pair made their way over to the fireproof tents that were erected a little ways out from the clearing where the dragons were kept.

The tents were set away for obvious reasons and they were slightly ramshackle structures that were larger on the inside. Some were a little charred around the edges where some of the dragons getting treatment had gotten fussy or one passing one had decided to have his revenge on some of the workers. The one that Charlie led James to, however, was fairly new especially for those coming for the summer and Charlie hastily tried to explain to James that there wasn’t going to be much opportunity for alone time if that was what he was after because all of the single tents had been taken, he’d be sharing with someone else.

That was, actually, the last of James’ worries and Charlie promised to have dinner with him before excusing himself to go back to the Longhorn. This left James to his own devices in a tent that appeared as though he was the first one to arrive. So, in typically British fashion, James abandoned his bag on the sofa and strode into the kitchenette, rolling up the sleeves of his shirt before putting the kettle on the hob, turning on the flame. Then, once the water began to boil, he turned the hob off, put a tea towel around the handle and lifted it off of the top of the stove, pouring some of the hot water into the cup. Then, having added a dash of milk he sat himself down on the sofa next to his bag, kicking his feet out of his shoes and up onto the coffee table. For now he’d have a break before indeed going out in search of his uncle for dinner.

Matt, for some reason or another, had grown particularly interested in dragons as of late. His fascination stemmed from their raw power yet strong intelligence. He had encountered a few dragons during his great wand quest; he'd even ridden one. When he had received word of the Weasley get Summer Dragon Quest he made it a point to at least visit the place and speak to Charlie Weasley; or at least to get a glimpse at some dragons. At first he was hesitant because lately the great Lestrange curse as he called it had come back. His name was getting him into trouble where he didn't want it. But he'd done enough work in The Order and around the light side of the force that, should his last name come up, Charlie Weasley wouldn't hex him on sight.

When he arrived at the grounds he was confused. He was sure that it the camp had started several days ago. Yet there were barely anybody walking around the camp grounds. There were plenty of tents though so perhaps they were all in their tents. But why? It's such a nice day out and there were dragons around! And just as this thought left his brain he spotted his first dragon locked in a cage. From the distance he couldn't make out what kind it was. Not that he really knew what dragon's looked like what. He knew what a Hungarian Horntail looked like but that was about it.

He walked up to the dragon and looked at it with awe. It was a beautiful creature. It's green scales were shining in the sunlight. He wanted to see it use those powerful muscles it had. It was a very bulky dragon and the horns were a bright gold. Digging deep into his memory trying to remember what he was ignoring during Care of Magical Creatures.

'Green Scales. Golden Horns. Green Scales. Golden Horns. The Romanian Longhorn horns are an illegal item. Many of the dragons were hunted and killed due to the demand. THIS IS A ROMANIAN LONGHORN!"

"Hello beautiful," he said as he moved closer to the cage. He was far from afraid of the dragon. But out of the corner of his eyes he saw a tent rustle slightly. No doubt they were magic tents. It was strange that one would rustle like that one did. He looked at the tent then back to the dragon. He made the decision. He started to walk towards the tent. Maybe Charlie Weasley was there and he would help Matt learn more about the wonderful beasts. Maybe he'd even give him a dragon. He reached the entrance to the tent and poked his head through the fabric.

"Hello?" he asked out loud.

“Potter, you need to take some serious time off,” one of the burly healers had grumbled at him. “Never mind the job – take the dog with you if you must. Just, get some time.”

So it was time that James had gone after. Fred had been more than understanding. In fact, James was more or less certain that Fred believed James’ sabbatical would bring back the real James and not the shadow of the man who had been his partner in all things who now wandered around in pastel jumpers worrying about ethics and trying to keep his head out of the big, black addiction hole. The real James wouldn’t have cared. The real James would’ve played Quidditch, chased after girls and drank until he couldn’t move. This particular James didn’t know what was so great about his former incarnation. It made him feel pretty rotten to consider it, anyway. Why bring that man back when surely this one was better, when the only fault was lapses in sobriety not honest badness?

The tea was helping somewhat. The healers had been specific about it because evidently James didn’t have as much of it as he should have and that was a real issue in health terms – though he highly doubted there was anything lying beneath that which qualified as real legitimate health advice. He could feel the strain begin to ebb away though and as he relaxed into the sofa, his toes twitching to music from a nearby tent, he felt as though maybe there was something good in what they were prescribing and maybe, just maybe, he could get past it. It was all sunshine outside. Inside it was pretty, though not as natural and pure. The fact of it was that he wasn’t home. He wasn’t living in a world that he had constructed to cope. He was in a tent in the middle of nowhere. For a minute he was someone else.

“Hello?”

At the sound of an unfamiliar voice, James looked up, pulling his glasses down from where he’d pushed them up on top of his head. The dark hair that was so very much like his father’s sprang out at all angles as though on cue and James slowly got to his feet, twisting the mug into one hand down by his side. He licked his lips absently, tugging at the cuff of his t-shirt sleeve, before raising a smile to his mouth. It was weak and awkward. The man was a stranger but time had served to prove that strangers were rarely strangers and often presented further problems to James who could never seem to answers they set about looking for in him. He was afraid that maybe, just maybe, this wasn’t a stranger but someone he should’ve known. That said, why anyone would go all the way to Romania just to find him and inquire about his misdemeanours was beyond his abilities of comprehension.

“Hi,” James returned hesitantly. “I’m Jim,” he introduced himself, parting from the company of the sofa to make his way over to the man. He extended his stray hand, his smile a little more genuine this time. “The kettle’s just boiled if you want a cup of something. Beautiful day, isn’t it?”

Matt saw an unfamiliar face peek up as he spoke out into the tent. It seemed to be a friendly face as he quickly smiled at him. The giveaway though was the lack of a wand in his face however. He kept his eyes on the man who was greeting him. He looked oddly familiar to him. He felt as though he'd seen the man before. The nagging sensation in the back of his head was something he would be able to subdue for the time being. The man would introduce himself and then he would surely figure out who he was. And as if he was reading Matt's mind, the stranger made his way towards him with his hand outstretched.

Jim

If Matt were a bit less polite he would have thrown his arms up in exasperation. How was "Jim" supposed to help him decipher his new acquaintance. He looked the man over once more before taking his hand and shaking it. He decided it was best to ignore the nagging sensation for the time being. He would find out who he was eventually. As he was shaking Jim's hand he smiled back. "The name's Matt." he told him brightly. "I'd love a cup, actually. I haven't had a fresh cup in a while, blimey." he trailed off as he let go of Jim's hand.

"It's been a while since I've seen a day so sunny. But I suppose that's what you get when you spent most of your time in London." he laughed as he began to explore the tent. Of all things magical he could never get over magical tents. If the Muggles could get their hands on anything magic this would definitely be one of the most popular. Matt had been muggle camping before and it was horrid. Of course he'd survive if he'd ever have to again he'd prefer not to.

"So you're a fan of dragons as well then?" he asked Jim as he made his way to the kitchen.
