"As I understand it," Khaat said, "existing marriages won't be broken up, or at least I haven't heard anything to that effect. However, the Ministry is still matching couples, and they aren't about to allow a muggleborn to be matched with another muggleborn. So the likelihood of a squib happening should really be a bit less. But--without purebloods being, to some extent maintained, the genetic gene pool will surely dilute over time.
"My best guess is that whoever is behind this has some axe to grind with some witch or wizard the wronged them or has some weird way he or she plans to get an advantage on less powerful wizards. I'm not sure."
"Its a plan that surely is designed by someone with patience," Marcus said. "A plan like this for power takes time to design, time to set up, time to execute, and even more time to wait for results. The fact that they managed to kill Thaor Elldir, as powerful as he was, use him to nearly kill Robert, and to launch all of this tells me that whoever this is is immensely patient and methodical. This has been planned with great detail."
"And that sort of detail means someone intelligent. And most likely dangerous," Khaat said.
"Without question," Marcus said.
"What I can use your help with, Mari," Khaat said, "is more eyes and ears at St. Mungos. I need to know what James is doing. If you get injuries or deaths from werewolf scratches or bites, I need to know about that. The hungrier they get, the higher the risk is that someone might get hurt or killed. I also need you to keep your eyes and ears open about any odd curses, potions, or anything that we don't typically see."
"And, if I might suggest, any rumors of anything new or odd at the Ministry," Marcus said.
"Yes, please," Khaat said. "Mari, you do know how to be stealthy. If you or Jess see or hear anything, do please send me word straight away. Don't put yourselves in jeopardy if you don't have to, but I'd appreciate knowing."
