“Yes, of course. That’s fine,” Avery nodded, shifting only slightly in the chair to force herself to relax. It wasn’t like she was going into surgery or anything. She would be fine. It was funny, she thought, that although Avery herself was to end up a mother, Sophia seemed to be almost mothering her in turn. She hardly minded, though; she had never exactly had someone like that. Not since she was very young, anyway.
As Sophia said, it felt a bit cold, but it was hardly a burden or a problem, so she just smiled at the other woman and nodded slightly once more, as if saying that she was all good to go. “Right, sorry,” Avery replied quickly, blinking a few times. “Bad wording. I just meant- I remember going into the meeting with Mrs. Levski and the spell she cast didn’t actually, you know, show any image of the baby. Because, of course, there wasn’t one then. I just thought it would be interesting, even if it’s not a very good picture.”
“Don’t worry,” she added softly. “My husband wasn’t supposed to tell me it was a girl, but he kinda let it slip.” Avery smiled fondly thinking on it, a near-laugh falling past her lips. “So yes, that surprise can at least still be. I mean, usually I’m not a huge fan of surprises, but…” She shrugged, knowing that she was talking far too much.
As she tried to relax so Sophia could run the test, Avery tilted her head to watch the screen. “You must be getting a lot of people in here. You know, with the law and everything. It must be hard for most of the girls,” she added, thinking aloud. “I mean, at least I knew my match before the letter came, you know? Some had never met, nonetheless got along.” Shaking her head, she sighed before leaning her head back against the chair and returning her gaze to the screen.
