Okay, so here's my thought about a redesign. There's no question that we need it. Classes, as they have been structured, don't work here, and for multiple reasons.
So--see what you think of this...
I'd like to keep school professors staff to the headmaster and 3 other HoH. Other positions, yeah, well, lets discuss them in a post or two from now. I'm thinking about a serious redesign for that. Classes first.
Instead of the current class structure, I'm thinking that we need, at least in part, to go to the grads for "guest lectures" on subjects that they are interested in. For example, perhaps Robert would do a class on healing. Not a whole term of classes. One class that would be more geared not only for interaction for characters, but also, perhaps, to do some education for players that perhaps need to know more about how those things work in order to hold jobs/use those magical specializations.
My personal thought is that we could do perhaps 4 of those classes at a time, let them run for perhaps a month or so, in RT, and then in the next month, run another/different class. Grads could apply to the admins for the class, a proposal on what they'd like to do, and then the admins would put it on a schedule. The grad who is teaching the class could be responsible for coming up with creative reminders for members about the class.
If you think about it, across a 12 month year, that gives characters a potential opportunity of 48 different learning experiences.
And, I think we should also offer tutoring/mentoring/extracurricular activities from the professors/HoH.
Perhaps somehow extend those class lectures into some apprenticeships/internships to earn class credit. For example, (I'll use Robert again). If Robert teaches a class on restorative potions, then perhaps some of the healing interns could work with him in the St. Mungos potions lab making some of those potions or working in the ER with him to actually use what they've made. Then the student could, IC, earn credit for that class. Again, more rp opportunities for a student to talk to their HoH about.
