Maybe have him walk into a werewolf fully transformed at the full moon without any wolfsbane potion having been ingested the week prior. They often kill their victims rather than turn them....

Yeah, no one would know that Marguerite is actually a muggle-born since she was born so long ago. She tells everyone that she is pureblood. I hope you find someone. I don't have any characters who fit the bill if you want it to be a student, unfortunately.

I'm offering you this idea: Avis is widely known thanks to her potions. They heal, take pain away etc. Perhaps Nathaniel wants to get rid of his drinking habit and Avis decides to help him. In the end he may overdose and eventually die. Therefore, the blood shall be on Avis' hands, but I dare to say that she won't feel much of the guilt. She'd warn him about the side effects if he'd drink too much.
But while recovering, maybe you'll re-think the idea of killing him and you'll actually end up with sobering him up.

But then again that's your choice.
