Dragon Defense Empty Dragon Defense

Post by Clementine Lovegood Tue Oct 09, 2012 3:53 am

Jamie practically ran to her classroom, believing that she was absolutely late and that all of her students would have arrived already. But to her amazement only a few were camped outside of the classroom doors waiting for her and they didn't seem particularly angry about it. So she swung the doors wide and propped them open with a small stack of textbooks. Heading to the front of the classroom she threw her bag on top of the messy desk and retreated to the back room as students settled in. While in the back she grabbed the only robe that was there for the taking - a brilliant powder blue one. The color was unfortunate but it covered her sweatpants and pajama shirt, which she was still wearing due to her unexpected conversation with Milo in the teachers lounge. She might look like an Easter egg but at least they couldn't tell she hadn't really gotten dressed yet.

With her robe secured she pulled up her hair in a long ponytail and fastened it with a hairtie. What she had planned for today's lesson wasn't one where you wanted stay pieces of hair to get caught on. She moved to a covered cage on the other side of the room and pulled off the cover to examine the contents. Yes. They were beautiful creatures. For the first time Jamie had had fun when making lesson plans for her class. She was pleased with the excitement level of her presentation compared to rule making and taking notes. Jamie covered the container again to calm the creatures down and lifted it up to carry into the classroom.

While she had been admiring her acquisition more time had passed than she thought and when Jamie re-entered the classroom she saw that the majority of seats had already been filled by students who were now chatting amongst themselves. Jamie lugged the cage to the table at the front and set it down as gingerly as she could. She strode over to the chalk board and picked up a piece of chalk, writing DADA Class Two across the top. "Good morning everyone." Jamie spoke loudly and clearly to the class to get their attention and stop the conversation. "Today you're going to need your wands out." She turned and faced them, offering a smile. "We are going to be practicing manipulating a situation to your benefit. Where this would mostly apply when confronted with a magical beast, it may also come in handy when in a duel with a fellow wizard." She pulled the cover off her cage and revealed the creatures within.

The miniature dragons snorted and puffed. Some flew around the cage in a fury and some slept comfortably at the bottom. "Turn to page 237 in your books. Scamander covers how to increase your odds when fighting a dragon. Look it over and when you're ready come to the front and pick a practice partner from the cage. I'll be coming around with individual instruction when needed. Remember these guys are small and don't even come close to rivaling it's full sized brother but they're the best thing to practice with unless we wanted to tear half the school down."

OOC: Because I've never acted as the teacher before in RPs I'm still working to find a good way to run classes. This time I'm saying that by the time Jamie comes out everyone who is not late will be in their seats already. Feel free to write your entrance when you reply but I am going to skip waiting for everyone to individually post their arrival so we can get to actual class activities quicker. Feel free to PM me if you have any other suggestions.
Some methods for disarming a dragon:
- transforming/removing teeth
- transforming exterior skin
- stopping fire-breath
- transforming/removing spikes

Dragon Defense Empty Re: Dragon Defense

Post by Chad Taylor Tue Oct 09, 2012 10:46 am

Chad was one of the students, who were for once early, he wondered if this was going to be a good subject today, probably not. He hadn't bothered looking at the Syllabus, he liked surprises, and hope din this class today, that's exactly what he'd get.

He walked into the classroom, and immediately sat down, he'd usually hit on the teacher, to get her stirred up, but for DADA, he thought he'd better be on her side. He was wearing his parkour clothing, not that he usually did the action sport, just the clothes were comfy. What were they going to learn about today? He hoped maybe dragons, but highly doubted his wild imagination, letting dragons into Hogwarts, so not on.

He told everyone to pipe down, when he saw her re-entering with a cage and something playfully snorting, please not be a baby, chameleon, he knew it was a muggle animal, but the things scared the bajeebees out of him. She lifted the fabric, which was originally covering the cage, and a baby dragon appeared, he gasped in amazement, and laughed giddily, this was awesome.

"Turn to page 237 in your books. Scamander covers how to increase your odds when fighting a dragon. Look it over and when you're ready come to the front and pick a practice partner from the cage. Is all he had to hear her say, and he was off, he opened his book, and skimmed read, probably not his best quality, and he quickly went up to her.

"It stays here, that to increase your chances, we'd need to transform or remove teeth, how would we get so close to do that, and also how would we be some advanced in transfiguration to transform a dragon?" he said, looking at her in awe, this was his new favourite subject.

Dragon Defense Empty Re: Dragon Defense

Post by Saoirse O'Connell Wed Oct 10, 2012 2:48 am

Saoirse arrived at her Transfiguration class to find, somewhat to her dismay, that the door to the classroom was still resolutely shut. She hadn't thought that she had arrived quite that early to class, but she wasn't left to wonder for long, because Professor Prophet showed up right behind her. She appeared to still be in her pajamas, but the professor had moved so fast past her, that Saoirse couldn't be sure. Perhaps Professor Prophet had received one of those obnoxious owls from Professor D'Eath last night as well.

Stifling a yawn, Saoirse followed Professor Prophet into the classroom and found a seat near the middle of the class. In her experience, the children in the front and the back of the class seemed to fall under closer scrutiny by the teachers. Those in front, merely because of proximity; and those in back, because of potential behavioral issues. Yes, the middle suited Saoirse just fine.

Being called to attention by the professor's voice, Saoirse straightened up slightly in her seat, then produced her wand with a slight trepidation. She was still far from confident in her wandwork, and she nearly groaned aloud when the creatures they were to be working with were revealed. Dragons? Even in miniature they were foreboding beasts. Saoirse couldn't help smile slightly, however, as when she was much younger she had been slightly obsessed with the creatures. Going as far as to wanting one for a pet, but that dream had been dashed when she had finally met one of the creatures in the flesh. It had been terrifying.

Saoirse turned to page 237 and began to read in earnest, though she was doubtful that she'd be able to find any spells within her capabilities to perform. Her doubts seemed to be solidified as she read the first passage on using spells against dragons:

"While dragon skin can resist most spells, such as the Stunning Spell, some spells can affect dragons if aimed at the right spot, or if cast by several people at once."

Saoirse rifled through the spells offered in the chapter, however she did not believe that she could manage any of them as she looked each one up in her spellbook. She could perhaps perform the Conjunctivitus Curse after some practice, however Saoirse continued to rifle through her first level spells, even looking through books for her other classes. She didn't want to hurt the tiny animal if she could help it. Any animal in pain was a terrible thing in her book.

Saoirse's finger lingered over a spell that she finally found in her book on charms. She supposed it could work, if she could manage to catch the dragon in the mouth. Its hide would most definitely repel the curse, and she'd have to be quick to use the charm before the little creature could breath fire, but she was sure she could do it. The charm wasn't exactly simple, however it was the best she could find to use against a dragon without hurting the poor beast while using it. The downside was that she needed a second party for the charm to work, so she wouldn't be able to practice it on her own. She would need to practice on the dragon, so she was sure she'd be dodging some flame today.

Shaky plan in her mind, wondering whether or not the professor would approve of the magic she chose to use, Saoirse stood from her seat and approached the cage of miniature dragons. Choosing a relatively calm beast, which resembled the common welsh green she knew a bit about, Saoirse gently retrieved her chosen vassal and cradled him close to her body to keep him calm as she returned to her seat.

Dragon Defense Empty Re: Dragon Defense

Post by James Wake Sun Oct 14, 2012 1:55 am

James Wake sighed as the Professor arrived. He had not particularly relished the thought of waiting further for a class he arrived fifteen minutes early too. While, in part, it was due to his poor timing, he allowed a modicum of guilt to lay with the professor. He politely, silently, took his seat, listening to her lecture with mild interest. Dragons, huh? Cute idea professor. Next up, match the students with ogres. Maybe the first years would get lucky and read Harry Potter's biography three hours before class began. Skimming the pages of his book for a moment, James stared at the dragons for the most dangerous of the group.

His eyes settled on a particularly feisty Norwegian Ridgeback, scales blood red and maw snarling. The young man shrugged, ready to get the class over with, and that dragon secured. The thing jumped from bar to bar, snorting and screeching as it searched for an out. The boy began by assuring his own safety from the snorting little beast. He fitted his fleshy, bleedy hand into a leather glove he fashioned from an inkwell and spell, and approached the professor pointing out the craziest snapper of the bunch.

"I'll work with that one. The snappy one,"
James pointed to the creature as it flapped away from his accusatory finger.

Dragon Defense Empty Re: Dragon Defense

Post by Anabelle Mulciber Sun Oct 14, 2012 2:56 am

Defense Against the Dark Arts had quickly become her new favorite subject, it even made Transfiguration her second favorite subject now. Usually the professors for this class were snippy and rude, something she had a hard time coping with, it really irritated her, but she actually liked Professor Prophet. She wasn't snippy and rude, at least not like the others, and even when she was, Hitamé could actually tolerate it from her. Not that she would ever lash out at a professor anyways.

She listened as the professor said they would be working with dragons and her eyes widened slightly at the amazement coursing through her of being able to see a dragon up close. Even if it was a miniature dragon, she loved the creatures and always wanted to see one. This was awesome. She turned to page 237 in the book and she read through the page. It was the only time she'd ever actually read through anything completely. Once she read through it, Hitamé got up from her seat and went to the cage where she looked at all the dragons inside.

Her eyes darted from one dragon to the next before they stopped on one of them that was apart from the rest. She tilted her head to the side and pointed to it, "I think I'll go with that one." She told the professor. The dragon tried to nip at her hand before shrinking away from her altogether.

Post by Saoirse O'Connell Wed Oct 24, 2012 9:12 pm

Upon returning to her seat, Saoirse settled the miniature beast onto her desk. She set her books up around it, so that it would not be able to get away easily. Saoirse practiced the incantation under her breath for a few minutes, making sure that she would get it right, then she began to provoke the dragon.

Saoirse wiggled her fingers at the dragon's tiny mouth, and it snapped at her fingers. She was waiting for it to breath flame, however, so she continued to poke at it; never getting her fingers too lest, lest she be bitten. Finally, the small dragon reacted how she was hoping. It opened its mouth wide, preparing to breathe flame.

"Slugulus Eructo!" Saoirse cried, pointing her wand at the unprotected inside of the dragon's mouth.

There was a green flash, and instead of breathing fire, the little dragon began to make thick gagging noises. The reason for this became clear when a small slimy slug came dripping from the dragon's mouth. What with slugs coming out of its mouth every few minutes, the tiny dragon was too preoccupied to worry about biting or flaming anymore.

"Professor," Saoirse said in a small voice, "I believe my dragon has been temporarily disarmed."

Post by Amelia Macmillan Sat Oct 27, 2012 5:02 am

Amelia tried not to groan when she saw the dragons. She had a feeling she was going to end up getting bitten by one or burnt because she wasn’t watching it. She also didn’t want to hurt them; she had a soft spot for animals despite not taking Care of Magical Creatures. She grew up on a farm, what did people expect.

Amelia sat her dragon down her desk. She jumped when it spat out flames at her and swung its tail at her. After a few tries she was able to remove the spikes on the tail. The dragon was now chasing its tail trying to figure out what happened. After it stopped it started spitting out a lot of fire so Amelia after several tries and nearly burning her hand she was able to stop the dragon from fire breathing. The dragon gave her the saddest eyes she had ever seen. She careful stroked the top of the dragon’s head. She knew this wasn’t the safest thing to do ever but she didn’t care. She felt it press its head up against her hand.

“Professor, I think my dragon is disarmed and subdued,” said Amelia raising her hand as her dragon curled up into a ball and fell asleep.

Dragon Defense Empty Re: Dragon Defense

Post by Asuna Mitchell Tue Oct 30, 2012 11:19 pm

Wow! We get to handle dragons today. Mini dragons but still...dragons. Asuna had never seen a real dragon before. After getting to see other magical creatures like hippogriffs, she had wondered if she would get to see a real life dragon too. She had loved learning about fictional dragons from her parents and her grandfather before she knew real ones existed. Thinking of her grandfather sent a pang of sadness through her chest. He loved explaining to her why certain cultures worshipped certain creatures by telling her about the myths from those cultures.

The sad thought of her grandfather shrank away at the sight of the first year hexing her dragon. Poor little beast. The girl did good work. Her solution was very original. Now to think about what to do with her dragon.

She ran ideas through her head as she went and picked a simple brown dragon with a tan underbelly. As she brought it back to her seat, she murmured, "Hello, little one. What should I do with you?" It snarled back at her and tried to bite her fingers.

Post by Alice Longbottom Sun Nov 11, 2012 1:51 am

Alice flew across the hallway, almost stomping on a small first year old in the process. "So sorry!" she shouted as she gave the scared little girl a quick apologetic smile. Usually she would stop and see if the girl is alright, but today she had no time whatsoever for any of that. She glanced at her clock and sighed once more. She was late, terribly late. Stopping herself just in front of the Defense against the dark arts classroom, she noticed that the door was already closed. She absolutely hated coming in late, when your late entrance always has to capture the attention of the whole class and the scrutiny of your professor. But today she had no other choice. It was better than skipping the whole class all together at least. Although she would be lying if she said that the idea of skipping this class didn't fall on her mind a few times at least.

Taking a deep breath, she opened the door and quickly found an empty seat. She flashed the professor an apologetic smile, in hope of not receiving any punishment for her tardiness. Surprisingly, it took her almost a whole minute to notice the cage inside of the room. When she did however, she reflexively jumped back a bit. Not because of the fear or size of the dragons, they were a lot smaller than their adult size, but because of the shear shock of their appearance. At least now she was sure that it wasn't going to be a boring class at all. She looked around and opened her book on the same page as everyone else did, trying to read about the assignment for the day.

Dragon Defense Empty Re: Dragon Defense

Post by Derry Flanagan Tue Nov 20, 2012 1:43 am

Derry was sitting in the back of the class, drumming a beat on his desk as was his habit. He smiled when the Professor finally entered the classroom, wondering in excitement what they would be doing today. He was not disappointed when the Prof uncovered the cage, revealing a pack of feisty little dragons. "Whoaaa!" he shouted happily. He noticed the girl beside him (Alice) jumping back in surprise and said:"Cool, huh?" He smiled broadly at her, before opening his textbook. He stared at the indicated page blankly for half a second before jumping from his chair to pick his dragon.

Derry chose a little copper-colored one - who was jumping around excitedly in the cage - and figured that was the dragon for him. But before managing to get back to his desk, he received a tiny little bite on his thumb. "OOOWW!" he yelled, making his way quickly back to his desk. "Okay..uh..which dragon is this?" As he watched his thumb swell double its size in less than a minute, Derry decided that maybe he should have read the instructions first.

"Aha! You little critter are a Peruvian Vipertooth..I think," he said, still holding the little devil in his hands. Dropping the dragon on his desk, he took out his wand from his back pocket, trying to remember what he was supposed to do about a poisonous bite.

As he read through his textbook, his thumb kept increasing in size. Suddenly deciding this was probably serious, Derry turned towards the brunette next to him. "Hey! Do you know what to do about this?" he said, smiling sheepishly, showing the girl his bleeding and horribly swollen thumb.
