GENERAL APPEARANCE: Howl's hair is shoulder-length, very scruffy-looking, and generally kept in a pony-tail. His most notable feature is that he is missing his ring finger on his left hand. He has dark circles under his eyes and his nose is very slightly but noticeably crooked. He appears to be a little jittery, as though he's constantly on edge. His voice is very raspy and hoarse-sounding as a result of downing very hot liquids, screaming, shouting, and purposely doing other things that would damage the way his voice sounds.

Thievery/shoplifting (though, he is still prone to getting caught from time to time)
Fairly talented on a broom (although, fairly reckless as well, given that he tends to value speed over control)

He actually has to work very hard to excel in his magic classes as he does not seem particularly magically talented, and his wand is prone to the occasional harmless mess-up/mix-up
He is persistently nervous and jumpy; tends to be fearful of others (particularly other Dark Followers and Death Eaters) which causes him to act like a "Yes Man"
Suffers from loneliness and some existential/identity issues
Reckless in that he's pretty much willing to do anything to maintain his lying/deception and in trying to cement his status as a cool kid but also cautious so that he CAN maintain his lying/deception

GOALS:
He wants to become an Animagus, so he spends a lot of time studying it and Transfiguration, sometimes at the detriment of his other classes (namely Defense Against the Dark Arts; although, he does exceptionally well in A History of Magic class).
He would like to become well-off or rich someday, and of course, famous/infamous. How he is going to accomplish that, he doesn't know.

PERSONALITY: Howl is notoriously deceptive, clever, acts very cocky (but is actually very insecure), prone to exaggeration (only when it comes to his various "misadventures", he keeps his lies about his heritage and his home life realistic), is a very nervous person, extremely distrustful of others (he literally trusts no one, and this is probably the root cause for his loneliness), and can be mean-spirited or friendly depending on whatever suits the situation at the time but he is a very extraverted-type character. He is not a particularly violent person and will only engage in violent acts by necessity (self-defense or by "orders"). He is well-known to be reliably hard-working and helpful to his various "contacts" and the Dark Followers.

FATHER: Unknown (but most definitely a muggle)/claims his pureblood father was John "Boy" Blishwick (a real pure-blood wizard who was not terribly well-known or significant, a small-time criminal constantly traveling from place to place and eventually died upon stumbling into a troll)

MOTHER: Amanda Young (a muggle, of course)/claims his pureblood mother was Celeste Gamp (another real person who was actually a half-blood witch who worked as a waitress; she is currently missing; presumed dead)

He "owns" a very small abandoned shack in the wizarding world. It is basically one-room with a cot and nothing else (not even bathroom facilities).

CHARACTER HISTORY

Early Years: Howl was born Richie Young to Amanda Young who told him that her boyfriend left her shortly before she realized she was pregnant. She worked hard to support herself and him, and she didn't necessarily abuse him or neglect him. She was, however, largely disinterested him and seemed to be caring for him merely out of obligation more than anything else. She didn't even seem to really care much or notice whenever he performed small acts of accidental magic, and she certainly didn't care much when she was told he was a wizard (although, she was surprised). As a child, Richie was curious, kind of a nerd, but a little prone to getting into trouble.

Hogwarts Years: From the time Richie learned he was a wizard, he became obsessed with magic and the wizarding world and would read voraciously of everything he could get his hands on about it. He had been very excited about attending Hogwarts. However, when he got there, he was picked on and tormented endlessly by a student for being a "Mudblood" (this could be someone else's character or an NPC, whichever works). His first year was the worst year, but he returned his second year, still as Richie Young, hoping it would be better. It wasn't. At the end of the first semester of his second year, he dropped out of school, and Richie Young disappeared.

So, what happened? Richie had started planning during the summer months before his second year. He did not want to be a "Mudblood" or "Muggle-born" any longer. He did not want to live in the boring and unmagical muggle world. And so, he decided that he would do something about it.... he decided he would need to craft his own "pure-blood" wizard identity. It was not nearly as difficult as he thought it would be, though it required extensive research about the wizarding world (which he thoroughly enjoyed) and developing a few unsavory contacts to get things or do things for him (which was the most difficult part and required him to form less-than-ethical "favors" *no killing or hurting anyone or anything like that*). By the start of the second year, he had everything planned out, but he thought he would give being a Muggle-born at Hogwarts one more try. When the torment started up again, Richie left at the end of the first semester and worked on assuming his new identity.

He decided to use "Muggle" means in which to change his appearance: i.e. physically dying his hair, pouring very hot liquids down his throat and screaming a lot to change the sound of his voice, he got himself into a lot of fist fights which helped roughen up his appearance (giving him the slightly crooked nose and darkening the circles under his eyes)... and because he decided it wasn't enough, he downed as much of an alcoholic beverage as he could (the first and ONLY time he's ever drank alcohol) and cut off his ring finger on his left hand. And then, he moved into an abandoned shack in a very poor (and well, bad) wizarding neighborhood and bided his time.

He rejoined Hogwarts half-way into the second semester of his second year and was met with a lot of questions (particularly from the staff), which he answered with some difficulty and consisted of answers like "Owls get lost, and I live in a bad neighborhood," "Was hiding out from a crook I pissed off," etc. Ultimately, his answers were satisfactory enough (though, he has been marked as a potential troublemaker to watch out for), and he was sorted (it is unclear whether the Sorting Hat actually recognized him or not, but it had told him that he seemed very familiar).

Naturally, he made his status as a pure-blood wizard known (and can produce his "pure-blood" family tree on demand), which eventually attracted the attention of a Slytherin or two that's composed of The Dark Followers. He did not hesitate to join them, mainly because he agrees on some of their policies (that the wizarding world is far superior to the muggle world and that non-human beings either need to be stamped out or stripped of all rights and made slaves) while he obviously does have some reservations regarding "exterminating Muggleborns and such" (you know, given that he is one), he does not ever speak up about it and maintains his pure-blood wizard identity always. It is also a self-preservation issue. He'd rather be against the side that has the possibility of showing mercy rather than against the side that shows none.
