"Yes," Robert said, all business now. He and Brian were gowned up and ready. They had assembled a whole room full of healers very quickly who were all preparing for this. Brian had never seen so many healers in one room for any procedure in his life. He wasn't sure what Robert knew, but Robert looked like he was prepared for just about anything.
"I'm coming to get Khaat right now," Brian said. He came into the prep room where Khaat was. She looked at him in surgical scrubs.
"So you're staying?" she asked. He frowned at her in disbelief.
"Where the hell else would I be? God, Khaat, they're my kids too. I was here for Abbey, and I'm here for these kids too," he said with a note of finality in his voice. "Let's go get 'em. Come on, Jess. Showtime."
"Are you ready for this?" Khaat asked Brian softly.
"Yeah," he smiled confidently. "I really wanna see my kids. Our kids." He kissed her and then he moved the bed into the surgical room. The healers began preparing her for the C-section as her father continued to prepare himself and the equipment.
"Now, I know you've done these before," her father told her, "but its always different when you're the patient and not the healer. Shall I talk you through it? The pain potions will make it difficult to focus on what I"m saying, though."
"Where's Mom?" she asked
"Right here, Dear," Kate said, coming in, almost unrecognizable because of the surgical scrubs. "Brian, we're counting on you to be the coach."
"I already thought we'd decided that," Brian said, sitting down beside Khaat's face and taking her hand.
"Are we ready, Everyone?" Robert asked, looking at the large network of healers around the room.
