It was his first day on the job. Byron figured that a part-time job at the Leaky Cauldron would do him some good, especially during the summer holidays. And so, when he read the hiring notice, he thought that to be trained in bartending would be a pretty interesting skill. Sure, Byron had musical talents, primarily on the guitar and a bit of vocals, but he was shy when it came to having to perform. He could definitely be brave, but when it came to music, he was uncertain, as if his modesty robbed him of confidence to share his talent. Bartending would be fun though.
An hour ago, Byron had entered the bar, only to find one man sitting in his lonely corner. He was then told what he had to do. Today, on his first day, he would pour the beer into their mugs and wash them, and that was all he could do. Once he passes today's tasks, there will be more to be taught and done. If someone should order something that did not involve beer, he should approach the resident barman to do the drink. Fair enough, very easy first day, it would seem.
Byron settled himself behind the bar, and felt drawn to the smell of the beer. Too bad he was not allowed even a drip of it. Roxi could always get alcohol, somehow. And his only tastes of them were thanks to her and his father. After a few minutes if standing behind the bar, people began to enter the Leaky Cauldron, slowly but surely. The manager nodded to Byron, and he put on a friendly smile. At least he tried to. It felt weird to just stand and smile at strangers who did not seem keen to smile back.
Suddenly, the entrance of someone caught Byron's eye. Smiling genuinely now, he watched Melissa Finnigan settle herself on a stool in front of the bar, and found himself taking a few steps to her, stopping when the senior barman went to take her order. Byron waited for the guy to walk away before proceeding to his friend.
"Millie!" Byron definitely knew her. Besides being in the same year in Gryffindor, this girl was a friend of him and Roxi. It felt good to see a familiar face on the first day of work. He was starting to feel bored from the ruddy faces of mundane-looking wizards.
