DEPARTMENT FOR THE
REGULATION AND CONTROL
OF MAGICAL CREATURES
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to you to inquire as to whether you wish to request a position within the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. Here at the Department, we have many positions worth taking up - everything from Beast Specialists to Magical Creature Healers and Personal Assistants. We wish to take full advantage of the great skill that has emerged from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry this summer.
We are offering a salary of roughly 4,000 galleons a year - twenty-thousand pounds in Muggle currency. The department is also offering places to those already established in the Wizarding World that are looking for a career change but more importantly, the new graduates that have emerged from Hogwarts.
There department is led by one of the best Magical Creature Specialists the Wizarding World has to offer - Zoe Gould. She is a credit to the department and soon, we hope that every employee hired this year will be as well. One of those employees will be you.
We hope to receive your owl no later than the 31st of July.
Yours faithfully,
Mrs. M. Hopworth
Secretary to the Head of the Department for Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures
Graduates!
The letter above has been poked through the letterbox of every graduated Witch and Wizard in the United Kingdom. The Department of the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures is now open for business! This new addition to the Ministry here on PA is not how you'll remember it from the books - in fact, it is more than a little bit different. Admittedly, the PM that I sent out was vague but that is because the majority of it was IC and Mrs. M. Hopworth isn't one of the brightest bulbs in the bulb box in fairness. Here, though, I will explain the different aspects of the Department and hopefully help you all understand what it's about.
Now, the first thing you'll probably notice is that there are no Divisions, but instead Specialists. This is simply because we want to draw everyone in together. The Department is incredibly large but we don't want an activity lull because one person is in the Beast Division and all of the others are in the Being Division. Instead, we have specialists. All of the specialists are together, helping with the cases that the Head of Department sets. This is to maximise activity and take members out of their normal rp-ing situations and perhaps get them rp-ing with people they haven't necessarily rp-ed with before.
The first specialists on the sign up sheet is the Being Specialists. What we've done with these is also mix the Misuse of Magic office in with them which means that the Being Specialists will be keeping tabs on all of the little students and sending them letters (IC PMS) if the Trace lets them know about a Misuse of Magic. Mainly, the Beings will deal with any creature that falls into the Being category - so Humans, Werewolves [in their human form], Hags, Vampires, Half-Giants. You know the drill. They will do everything from counselling to going to visit Half-Giants up in their villages.
The Being Specialists are also something of Wizard-Being relations officers. They are always striving to improve the relationships between the Wizards and the Vampires, Werewolves etc. and so when the Being Specialists are granted promotions [more will be said about this further down] they will get to choose what type of Being to specialise in. As a normal Being Specialist, they will work with all of the Beings but as they gain experience and promotions, they will become more proficient in a particular area of their work and this applies to all specialists.
The second set of specialists are Beast Specialists. Now these people are the Hagrid types. They like the weird, the wacky and the dangerous. They arrest Basilisk breeders, tangle with Dragons and run around after Three-Headed Dogs that want to eat people. They're the type of people that often come back to the office charred after a hard day at work. But the thing is...they love it. They love the danger and they love the excitement.
Now, the Beast Specialists are part of the Werewolf Capture Unit. But in some ways, so is every specialist as they are the No. 1 concern for the Head of Department. These Specialists - when they're not being set on fire by dragons - are looking to improve Werewolf-Wizard Relations and also find ways to sedate the werewolves they're sent out to catch. They also spend a good deal of time tracking Werewolf packs, tracking their movements and what they're up to.
They are also in charge of dealing with Merpeople and ensuring that the Centaurs don't harass everyone. These Specialists are brilliant at dealing with all of the issues that the Beasts of the Wizarding World have to deal with. They also help the Head of Department - along with everyone else - decide on the classification of every Magical Creature in the Wizarding World.
Spirit Specialists are next! They are the thorns in the sides of Peeves, Vito (or if they're not they should be) and other Poltergeists. They deal with the Spirits of the Wizarding World. They capture Boggarts and welcome Ghosts to the afterlife! They also do a lot of research into Horcruxes and the idea of the soul. They are the bookish people that also come in charred after some sort of incident with Nymphs. There are always new little spirits to discover and these Specialists do a lot of field work, watching how the Spirits interact with the world around them. They want to find out what it is like to exist in between life and death. They want to understand what it is like to just exist.
With the Spirit Specialists, we start to see similarities to the Department of Mysteries Unspeakables. They work quite close with the Unspeakables, looking at life and death, and explore different parts of that. They are incredibly interested into the death side of things. They want to understand why Ghosts come back as they do and why some creatures are never born at all - i.e. Poltergeists - yet exist anyway. Personally, I love these Specialists. I think there is so much depth here and there is so much plottage to be had.
RIGHT! Nearly done, promise. ;D
Next we have another favourite of mine...the Healers that belong to the Department. They're vets in short! They work with everyone in the Department but more specifically, they hang out in the areas that different creatures are kept. They come in charred with the Beast Specialists and wander in after being harassed by Nymphs all day with the Spirit Specialists. This lot are quite a bit like the Spirit Specialists because they do a lot of magical explorations. But these guys are the strawberries to the Spirit-S's cream because these ones look at life.
The look at Magical Diseases, work on new potions to cure them and are constantly studying Lycanthropy. They also get up close and personal with all types of creatures. They get to peer into the mouths of Dragons and bandage up the poorly Giants. They are lovely and they are the best friends of every specialist in the Department because although the Specialists know the animals inside out, they're hardly trained to help them when they're hurt so these guys are incredibly useful!
I mean, who doesn't want to be surrounded by animals all day...helping them get better? :D This lot also wander around the globe, observing different animals in their habitat. They go in search of new Magical Creatures and re-look at the ones the Wizarding World already look at. They are both the researchers and the Healers - two for the price of one!
Now, last one - I promise. These ones are incredibly important! Secretaries! Woo! They send
junk mail those paper aeroplanes around the Ministry with notes on them. They make sure the Specialists are where they need to be, organise meetings and keep the whole Department up to date. The secretaries have the opportunity to make their way through the Ministry at an alarming pace. In a year, the secretary to one of the Spirit Specialists could become the Personal Assistant of the Deputy Minister!
They are incredibly important to the whole Ministry and they have a lot of time on their hands so not only do they aid the Specialists date-wise but they also do a lot of research themselves so they're not entirely idle! In fact, some of them don't even stay secretaries. If the Specialists see potential then they have the opportunity to be trained to specialise in a certain field - Spirit, Beast, Being or Healing. So there is always potential here with these lovely people and a lot of plottage!
PromotionsPromotions can be achieved easily enough -- through activity and achievement within the Department! Your character can get a promotion at any time and once that is given, you can choose which direction your character would like to go in. Mostly, the promotions will go as follows.
Start - Spirit/Beast/Being Specialist.
P1 - Junior Spirit/Beast/Being Specialist.
P2 - Senior Spirit/Beast/Being Specialist.
P3 - At this point, your character can choose which direction they can go into. So, for example, if they're a Being Specialist, perhaps they decide to explore the social stigma directed towards Muggles and Muggleborns. If your character is a Beast Specialist then maybe he or she becomes a Use-of-Dementor Regulator or a Centaur Support Worker. If he or she is a Spirit Specialist then maybe he or she forms a Boggart Capture Unit, deciding to head it herself/his self. Or perhaps, he or she could specialise with Nymphs!
For the Healers, it is the same sort of structure.
Start - Magical Creature Healer.
P1 - Junior Magical Creature Healer.
P2 - Senior Magical Creature Healer.
P3 - At this point, the Healer can decide whether to specialise with a certain group of animals - so for example Werewolves or Dryads. Or perhaps they could even dedicate their time to disease research in both animals and humans - both Wizard and Muggle.
And again, for the Secretaries and PA's it is much of the same.
Start - Secretary/Personal Assistant - the secretary/PA for the specialists.
P1 - Junior Secretary/Personal Assistant - a secretary/PA for one or two Junior Specialists.
P2 - Senior Secretary/Personal Assistant - a secretary/PA for a specific Senior Specialist.
P3 - By this time, the secretary can/will either be chosen to become the Head of Department or he/she will work through another Department. They may even decide to become a specialist of sorts after all of the research they themselves have done.
Now, this Department needs to be as active as possible and the best way to get a Promotion is to work through the subplots the Department has. It can be anything from capturing werewolves to discovering why Borely Rectory is haunted! Don't feel daunted by the Promotions because I cannot stress how achievable they are!
So why not join the Department? Your characters will be working under the guidance of the fabulous Zoe Gould and in the Wizarding World right now - there is no one better! Send a letter to Mrs. Hopworth (PM me -- because IC pms are the way to go. ;D) if you're interested and hop over to the
sign up sheet and pick out your characters speciality!
