Description:
The Basilisk is a monstrous serpentine creature., also known as the King of Serpents. It is a creature bred by Dark Wizards. The first basilisk is believed to have been created by a Dark wizard and Parselmouth named Herpo the Foul. He accomplished this by hatching a chicken egg beneath a toad. Basilisk breeding was banned in Medieval times.

A basilisk kills both with its powerful venom from its fangs and its eyes, which are immediately deadly to any creature (except for a ghosts) who looks at them directly. To anyone who looks at it indirectly, such as through a mirror or in a camera or behind a fog or a smoke, it creates a penetrating state of petrification.

Since the Basilisk is still a serpent, a Parselmouth may place a Basilisk under his or her control. This depends on the loyalty and relationship between the Basilisk and the Parselmouth.

Since a boggart changes shape upon sight, no one knows what one looks like in original form or when it is alone. Some wizard's who studied their behaviour proposed that when you plan to face a boggart, it is best to have someone else along, to try to confuse it.

They have no free will, and cannot think for themselves; their purpose is merely to serve as puppets under the control of the sorcerer who reanimated them, similar to voodoon zombies.
