((No worries about the length. It sets the scene well enough, and that’s really all that matters for starting topics))
Amelia checked her watch for what seemed like the tenth time since she had started her rounds only an hour ago. Somehow, the headmaster had roped her into doing the late night rounds, though why he couldn’t get James to do it was beyond her. James was more of a night person, and probably – if Amelia was being honest – made a better member of the imperium squad than Amelia did.
Although the headmaster claimed the Imperium squad was simply a replacement for the prefects, Amelia had since learned otherwise. The additional powers that were given to the prefects – like taking house points and awarding punishments for misdoings around the castle – seemed to undermine the system of respect that the prefects had been based upon. In theory, it was better to be reprimanded by a prefect than by a professor; this didn’t hold true as much when that prefect – now imperium squad member – could take house points and land you in detention.
Amelia wasn’t altogether comfortable with the power she had been awarded, so she had been treating her new title in much the same way she had always treated the prefect title. She did what she was told, but kept her power in check. In her opinion, being a member of the imperium squad was just another thing on her list that needed to be taken care of; just another resume booster that her parents had forbidden her to turn down, something she wasn’t passionate about but could pretend to tolerate long enough that no one asked questions.
Though it had seemed like longer, her watched showed that it had only been five minutes since the last time her eyes had strayed to her wrist, meaning she still had two more hours before midnight when she could finally go back to the dorms and tackle the mounting pile of homework she had. It wasn’t that she had procrastinated, but rather that she was a perfectionist. Assignments which took others an hour took her five because they needed to be absolutely flawless, even down to the handwriting.
As her feet hit the bottom of the staircase, Amelia turned right into the second floor corridor. As she did, her eyes made the customary sweep of the corridor, expecting to see nothing, as she had on every other floor, but instead her eyes fell on a figure walking down the hallway. Because of the shadows caused by the wall sconce, she had to move closer in order to see who she was looking at, but when his features were thrown into relief Amelia found that she recognized the face.
“Aden?” Amelia asked inquired, as if her eyes were tricking her. She had stopped midway down the hall, leaving several meters between herself and the Gryffindor boy she hadn’t seen in what seemed like ages. Not since the prefect’s bathroom incident, in fact.
((I assume you know that the prefects have been replaced by the Imperium Squad, but just in case you don't: Majere took away the prefects and head girls and hand picked a group of students to be his minions. Amelia got picked, and her parents wouldn't let her say no. Thus, she is a member of "the squad".))
