"You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart"
Founded by Godric Gryffindor, the common room of this house can be accessed via the Portrait of the Fat Lady on Hogwarts' seventh floor.
Many Gryffindors value their courage above other traits, which can lead them to showboating and pointless bravery. However, students are also sorted to Gryffindor for being noble and daring, and for believing in the ideals of knightly chivalry.
The house crest of Gryffindor is a golden lion rampant on a scarlet field. Gryffindor corresponds to the alchemical element of fire.
Gryffindor's house ghost is Nearly Headless Nick.
Notable Gryffindors of the past include:
- Albus Dumbledore, Headmaster of Hogwarts, Supreme Mugwump, Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot, Grand Sorcerer, Order of Merlin: First Class
- Sir Cadogan, Knight of King Arthur's Round Table
- Peter Pettigrew, traitor to the Potter family & dark wizard

"You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true,
And unafraid of toil"
Founded by Helga Hufflepuff, this house is notable for allowing anyone into its ranks.
An under appreciated house, often disparaged by others for being "the leftovers". The main attributes of Hufflepuffs are loyalty and being willing to put in hard work to achieve their goals. Hufflepuffs are often humble and friendly unless roused, which can cause people to underestimate them.
The house crest is a black badger rampant regardant on a golden field. Hufflepuff corresponds to the alchemical element of Earth.
With a common room in the basements, Hufflepuffs have direct access to the kitchens. They also have the largest common room in Hogwarts and the only one that isn't password protected. Instead, students must tap the barrels near the entrance in the right sequence and rhythm with their wands.
Hufflepuff's house ghost is The Fat Friar.
Notable Hufflepuffs of the past include:
- Newt Scamander, world authority on magical creatures
- Artemisia Lufkin, first female Minister for Magic
- Nymphadora Tonks, Auror & metamorphmagus

"Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
If you've a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind."
This house was founded by Rowena Ravenclaw. While many believe only the smartest students are sorted here (including Ravenclaws themselves) Ravenclaws are sorted for their "love of knowledge", meaning that this house is filled with students with a variety of abilities and accomplishments.
The house crest of Ravenclaw is a bronze raven rising on a blue field. Ravenclaw is corresponds to the alchemical element of air.
The Ravenclaw common room is accessed via a spindly, circular stairwell from the fifth floor. Students can only get inside by answering a riddle posed by the door knocker and often younger Ravenclaws crowd up the top of the stairs until someone comes out or an older student answers the question for them.
Notable Ravenclaws of the past include:
- Ignatia Wildsmith, inventor of floo powder
- Garrick Ollivander, of Ollivander's wands
- Quirinus Quirrell, former Defense Professor and Dark Wizard

"Or perhaps in Slytherin,
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folk use any means,
To achieve their ends."
Although founder Salazar Slytherin valued blood purity above all else, Slytherins are mostly sorted according to qualities such as cunning, ambition and shrewdness. Many Slytherins have cynical or Machiavellian outlooks toward life.
The Slytherin house crest is a silver snake with tail nowed on a green field. Slytherin corresponds to the alchemical element of water.
The entrance to the common room is concealed down in the dungeons, and is accessed through a password that changes each fortnight.
Notable Slytherins of the past include:
- Myrddin Wyllt, otherwise known as Merlin
- Lord Voldemort, He Who Must Not Be Named
- Severus Snape, Former Headmaster of Hogwarts
