Rumors Known About Character:
- Whenever anything goes wrong, there tends to be a rumour that Johnny was somehow involved. Fourth Floor corridor flooded? Someone saw Johnny leaning on the bathroom pipes last night. Giant Squid in a mood? Could just be a coincidence, but Johnny was wading in the lake when it kicked off. Ancient Runes Professor off with food poisoning? Now I can't be sure, but hasn't Johnny been given a few detentions for sneaking into the kitchens after hours?
- Got hit in the head by a bludger when he was a First Year and has been failing classes ever since (it was his shoulder and he was failing before that)
- Kicked out of Gobstones Club for losing all the stones before a tournament (he did offer to replace them)
- Homeless (it was one time and it wasn’t even a whole night.)
- Honestly, people probably think he’s a lot dumber than he actually is- the stories of his many failures/catastrophes are much more amusing and numerous than his achievements. Just once, he’d like to do something impressive enough that people take notice and forget the noise.
Bio: John and Nicola Murray's marriage hadn't always been troubled, but by the time Johnny came along it had been on the rocks for long enough that they probably should have set about getting a divorce rather than having a child. No-one really expected Johnny to save his parents' marriage and indeed he didn't, instead becoming just another territory over which their war was waged, the battleground expanding to encompass all the little decisions and sacrifices involved in raising a child. Never mind that they'd already had one and fought those same battles over her, old ground was covered and old wounds re-opened with relish. One thing Johnny had that his sister had not was an older sibling to bear the brunt of the distracting and peacemaking, leaving Johnny mostly to his own devices, uninvolved in the drama that punctuated his childhood.
That's not to say that he disliked his parents. On the contrary, when interacting with them separately (and occasionally together) he got on with them very well, anticipating the mini-Quidditch matches with his dad and savouring the movie nights with his mum. They shone as individuals, and when the going was good it was very good. For the most part it was not good. He learned to create a circle of friends at school and among neighbours with whom he could spend his time when the house was too loud or tense, whiling away the days outside or in town.
One thing uniting his parents was their allegiance to Hufflepuff house, and though they never pressured either way, both were happy to see him follow in their footsteps. The Sorting Hat didn't hesitate over him, declaring him a credit to the spirit of Hufflepuff and sending him off the table to loud cheers and wide grins. It was a home quickly settled into, a family easily adopted. Unfortunately, Hogwarts took a bit longer to take to
him, as he found himself falling into a number of scrapes and falling behind in a number of subjects. Despite his best efforts, order and success continued to elude him through the years and he remained doggedly average, though he was well-liked among the student body and even by some of the teachers he failed to impress. Coming into his OWL year Johnny hopes to improve all his grades in time for the exams and find something he may actually be very good at. It might be hard, but it has to exist. Doesn't it?
