“Pacing will get you absolutely nowhere, Kiddo. You’re just wearing out my carpet.”
Keiran looked up only briefly at his mother before frowning and dropping his gaze back to the floor. Finally, he stopped. Lifting a hand to his chin, he ran his fingers over his lips as he thought. This would either go very well, or very poorly, and he couldn’t tell which. He could hear the footsteps of the first two to have arrived as they made their way around the rooms upstairs. His father’s study had been cleared of excess furniture, leaving the shelves and lamps, the area turned into a sort of dormitory for the boys. The two guest rooms had been turned into rooms for the girls, though he was embarrassed to say that neither of the rooms were particularly impressive. Nothing like the Hogwarts dormitories.
The two Ravenclaws were in the first guest room, situated over their living room. Neither of them were even the ones that the Ministry tried to send away; the younger hated the law because her friends were affected, while the elder had apparently left for her own reasons. Keiran understood Adrienne’s husband better than he did the girl herself, as the boy had been in his House while Keiran was Head of Slytherin. Trisha’s husband, he didn’t know at all. She shouldn’t have had one. The girl was barely sixteen. She shouldn’t have to be pulled into any of this, nonetheless a secret school that could get her into trouble if the Ministry didn’t like it.
“Keiran.”
His head turned again to look at Bridget as she leaned over the back of the couch, resting on her forearms. His hand fell to his side before he finally spoke. “This may not be safe. They probably won’t be safe. They’ll need somewhere to go if something happens.” Pausing briefly, he crossed his arms over his chest. “I’ll ask Jack. Or, just… suggest it.”
“It’ll be fine. You’ve got quite the team behind you.” Bridget assured him, standing up straighter. “Avery is watching the Ministry, you can ask Millie and Elliot to keep an eye out around Diagon Alley. It’ll work out one way or another. If they can’t stay here, you can ask Jack. Or Robin, for Merlin’s sake.”
“Mum-“
“You have to work it out eventually, Keiran. You can’t avoid him forever. And you clearly can’t avoid Avery. What happens when she asks him for help? When you need someone looked into and he’s the man for the job but you won’t ask.”
“I’ll ask Audriana.” He replied immediately. Bridget pursed her lips at Keiran, silencing him.
“Not the point, and you know it.” She said after a moment, clearly chiding him. “Don’t do this while the kids are here. If you want to panic about something, do it while Rivah is here and you can talk to Jack without the possibility of kids walking in while you’re talking about-“ Bridget dropped her voice to a whisper, “-the Ministry barging in here and attacking them.”
“I’m not trying to scare anyone!” He returned, voice as low as his mother’s. “I’m trying to protect them.”
Voices upstairs cut him off, especially when he realized the girls were laughing. Granted, they weren’t the half-breeds he was meant to look out for. But they were also in danger now, but they seemed determined not to think about it. Sighing, Keiran looked towards the front door. “They’ll be here soon, the rest of them. Let’s just figure it out when Jack gets here, yeah?”
“I just said that.” Bridget remarked, turning and heading into the kitchen. She tossed a knowing smile over her shoulder at Keiran as she went, though, showing that she meant no harm. Her son just rolled his eyes and went into the front hallway, heading into the yard to check that the wards were still up. If he and his mother had done them right, only those they expected to show up would be able to. It wasn’t until he had turned his back and walked a few steps that he heard the next person – well, he thought it was just the one – arrive.
