Its About Quality, Not Quantity Empty Its About Quality, Not Quantity

Post by Marcus Belby Sun Jan 12, 2014 8:58 pm

Marcus found himself in the unusual position of having a whole weekend off. It was ridiculously rare.  But then, his new employers were a rare breed themselves.

Marcus had spent years working as the personal bodyguard to kings, queens, ministers, and the like, and doing whatever espionage work that was too sensitive to give to anyone else.  He was good at his job, and he knew it. So did his first wife, Stelladora. She had gotten him the gig in Bulgaria because the pay was good, and at the time, he had sorely needed it because his second wife was busy not just spending every little bit Marcus made, but now they had four children to support. The first time had been an accident, and it had produced twin boys. The second time, she had promised him she was taking the proper potion to prevent such business, and she had lied. So, then came their third—their only girl. Marcus had decided to take the potion himself, figuring he couldn’t trust her, only to find out that she had switched his potion and managed to produce yet one more Belby heir. Another son.

He had been outraged. Not at the children, but rather at the deceit about how they’d come about. He had no intention of telling the children that. Evelyn had intended children to be the ties that bound him eternally to her. She knew nothing of love. She also apparently knew nothing of Marcus. He didn't play those games with human lives.  Not his own, and not his children.  He only ever told them they were conceived in much love and that they had been loved straight from the outset. For his part, it was true.  For Evelyn’s, not so much.

She had had the kids, spent every cent Marcus made, and then buggered off with some Hungarian playboy to continue her selfishness spree. Marcus had come home to find his children, small at the time, unfed, unclothed, unbathed, unsupervised.  She had just gone and left them behind.  He was somewhere beyond outrage. He had taken the children to his parents in their state of emergency and they had been there since. Marcus had closed all his joint bank accounts with Evelyn, sold their home, and had cut Evelyn loose to go do whatever it was she did.  They were married still in name only. He had no interest in her anymore, and, so far as he knew, she had no contact with the children and hadn't, in years. He doubted she knew he had taken legal steps to forbid her from seeing them anymore, ever. The very thought of Evelyn brought out the hidden bitterness Marcus still held for her for how criminally she had treated four tiny children.

She was a compulsive lover of all things impulsive and selfish. Early on in their marriage, she had mistaken Marcus for one of her own kind. It was true he could look that way on the surface.  He liked women, alcohol, gambling, smoking, the whole bit. The difference was that there was depth to Marcus. The selfishness was only skin deep. It wasn’t the whole of him.  The vices were only self medicating. They were only what he did to numb his own personal frustrations.

Still, underneath, Marcus was a relentlessly driven man, committed, loyal, a fierce warrior for the things he believed in. He had burned out with the potbellied, middle aged Bulgarians that he had found to be rather primitive behind closed doors.  So, when Stelladora had again entered his life and had put him onto a new job lead that placed him back in England, he had taken it.

It put him closer to his children, and he wanted that. And second, his client was a lady. Not an imitation. And that was irresistible. She was smart, tough, skilled, and he thought she was dazzlingly beautiful.  It also helped that she played an outstanding chess game. And right now, she really did need him. Her life was in danger. He hadn’t taken time off because, frankly, he didn’t trust her safety to anyone else but himself.

Her husband had chosen to take a weekend with her before the upcoming birth of their seventh child. Marcus believed it might well actually turn out to be seventh and eighth simultaneously, but he wasn’t speaking out on that.  Some things were better left unsaid. Still, it gave him a weekend off. He had sent an owl to his father, Jonathan, and had asked to see the kids.  Jonathan had said that the older boys were on a skiing holiday with schoolmates. Marcus was glad they could go. His youngest son, evidently, had bronchitis and was home ill. Marcus had sent the boy a “care package” to brighten his spirits.  Jonathan had said that Brooke wanted to come, though. Marcus was delighted. He had never had a whole weekend alone with his daughter.  He had taken the opportunity, before going to meet Brooke, to check into a luxurious hotel suite for them in London.

He was a good father. He provided lavishly for them, and, while he didn’t see them often, he had great quality time with them when he did see them.  They loved him, and he loved them.  He had told them he was a bodyguard for royalty. They knew that. But his kids had inherited his intelligence.  He strongly suspected that they knew that, in all truth, he was a highly paid, highly skilled intelligence agent.  He could never admit it to them, but he believed they knew.

This morning, he found himself in gray slacks, with a white v necked cashmere sweater, and a black wool peacoat, his hands in his coat pockets, waiting in the lobby of the Victoria and Albert Museum, and feeling comfortably patient as he waited for the strikingly tall figure of his father bringing Brooke.  A weekend just with her.  He was definitely looking forward to it.

Brooke was beyond excited about today, her grandfather told her she was going to spend the day with her father.  It was unfortunate that Ezra couldn't make it, but he gotten sick and was in his room resting.  It been awhile since she spent the whole day with her father, usually it was with her three brothers.   Seeing how she was raised by her older brothers when their mother left, Brooke gotten along very well with them. They very rarely fought, and they were very protective her.

"I'll tell daddy you said hi Ezzy."said Brooke softly hugging her little brother.  "Sorry you couldn't come, I know you wanted!"said Brooke.  "B.B it's ok, go have fun with dad!"said Ezra hugging her back.   "Bye Ezzy, I'll be back in a couple of hours or so feel better!"said Brooke softly as her grandfather called her from down stairs.  "Coming!"said Brooke as she ran downstairs as she turned to her grandmother. "You sure your going to be ok taking care of Ezzy by yourself grandma?"Brooke asked her softly.   "Yes I'm sure Pussycat, you been a great help, but you have fun with your father today me and Ezzy will be fine."said her grandmother hugging her before bundling her up against the cold weather.  "We don't need anyone else sick."said her grandmother as Brooke  nodded.

"Come on Pussycat, we must not keep your father waiting!"said her grandfather as he took her gloved hand and apperated into a small alley way behind the museum.  "I wonder what daddy has plan for today!"said Brooke excitedly.  "I don't know Pussycat, we just got to wait and see."said her grandfather.  As they walked into the museum Johnathan seen his son and walked over towards him.   As they did, Brooke broke into a run with a smile on her face.

"Daddy!" Brooke said softly as she hugged him around the waist seeing how she was so short.  She was the shortest out of the brothers, she was even shorter then Ezra which was sad seeing how she was older then him.   "I missed you Daddy!"said Brooke still hugging him.   Brooke couldn't remember the last time she had a day alone with her father, she was really looking forward to it. Brooke was wearing a blue and black trench coat with her Ravenclaw scarf wrapped around her neck with her ravenclaw gloves and a matching hat that went with her trench coat,

Marcus saw the charismatic figure of his father walking through the blob of tourists who had gathered to get into the museum. He saw his father first and had to wait a moment until his father had passed through some of the blob to see Brooke. It made him smile. Then she ran and hugged him. He hugged her back and kissed her.

"You get more beautiful every day," he said to her. "I have missed you so much, and it just so happens that I have the whole weekend off. So unless you have a hot date, perhaps you'd indulge your old man and spend the weekend with him."

"The weekend?" Jonathan Belby frowned. "We didn't pack a thing."

"I'm not broke, Dad," Marcus said. "I'll just buy whatever you need, Brooke. Not a problem."

"How did you get the weekend?" his father frowned.

"You mean how did I get more than one day off in a row?"

"I'm surprised you got a whole day, much less a weekend," his father said.

"It has been known to happen," Marcus shrugged. "What do you say, Kiddo?" he asked her. "You up for a little adventure?"

His father seemed to be looking now at something behind him. Then his father sighed, annoyed. "Go now, Marc."

"Johnny!" a shrill, loud call broke out from a woman's voice well behind Marcus. It was an old familiar voice, one that had the power to rattle Marcus's spinal cord and his father's.

"She always sounds like a harpy," his father rolled his eyes. He frowned, hesitating. "And now she looks like one too."

Marcus turned and looked over his shoulder to see his wife arrogantly just finishing a purchase of some sort of illegal potion or substance right out in the open. He didn't know what she was wearing, but it was some odd combination of green, purple and gold, with some sort of hat that looked like a whole crown full of feathers. She was enthusiastically waving at Jonathan, and "yoo-hoo-ing" him.

"That's because she is a harpy," Marcus said dryly. He was glad that Brooke had been spared ever having to meet her biological mother. Evelyn had turned into some walking, talking farce.

He directed his attention back to Brooke. "Sweetheart, stay with your grandfather a moment," he said smoothly, "while I tend to a bit of business. She's just someone who isn't quite right in the head, honey."

"Marc," his father began, with a warning tone in his voice. Marcus had no intention of ever allowing any of his children within a soccer field's distance of their mother.

"No, I've got this," Marcus said, as his father wrapped his arm around Brooke's shoulder. Marcus started to walk towards his wife.

"Is that little Brookie?" Evelyn fairly shrieked.

"Ignore her," Jonathan said to Brooke. "She's a nut."

"Oh come on daddy I'm only twelve, you know you'll always be my number one no matter how old I get!"said Brooke softly.  Brooke's eyes sparkled with happiness.  "You gotten the whole weekend off daddy, how you managed that?"Brooke asked him curiously tilting her head.  Brooke nodded and smiled.  "I say lets do it!"said Brooke before holding her father's hand.

Hearing a , screeching noise that sounded like a mandrake that made Brooke's blood turn cold.   What a minute, that voice, why did it sound so  familiar?  Like she heard that voice before when she was little.  No... it wasn't, it couldn't be her mother right?   Brooke's eyes turned a  dark green with anger at the thought of her mother.

Hiding behind her grandfather Brooke peeked out behind her  grandfather.  "Daddy, grandpa whoever this lady is, get her away from me she's scaring me with her Screechy voice!"said Brooke.  "I  daddy know you, grandpa and grandma told me not to say mean things to people,  but she sounds like a mandrake that I pulled up yesterday in Herbology, loud and annoy!"said Brooke honestly.  "I have to agree Pussycat."Johnathan murmured before Brooke giggled.

Although she was little when her mother would leave them to go shopping, but that lady voice sounded so much like her mother's voice. "What I minute, that voice, sounds so much like her." Brooke spat angrily. Brooke didn't call her mother her mother, she called her by her and only her so they knew who she was talking about. After all why would she? she wasn't there for her nor her brothers, she left them at home half the time to go shopping. Brooke hated her mother, she had nothing to do with her but then again, her mother never had anything to do with her, so she wasn't worried about it.

"I'm getting rid of her," Marcus reassured Brooke. He left her with her grandfather and went over to Evelyn. There was a young man she'd brought with her.  He smelled. Marcus guessed the kid was not even half her age.

He clutched his wife's upper arm hard enough to bruise her, not caring, and dragged her around a corner out of Brooke's sight and pinned his wife to the wall. He looked in her eyes and knew all too clearly that she was stoned out of her brains on a whole potpourri of illegal potions.

"What are you doing here?" he demanded.

"Nothing, Marky," she cooed at him. "Just a little business, that's all. You wouldn't happen to have a few extra quid, would you, Sweetie Pie?"

"No," he said coldly. He hated being called Marky. She only called him Marky when she wanted money and was trying to suck up to him. "What the hell are you wearing? Mardi Gras isn't until next month, and you're on the wrong continent, honey."

"Its the latest designer couture from the continent for witches...." she began to gush over her huge feathery headdress.

"Shut it!" he hushed her. She was too loud.  "Do you want everyone to hear?"

"Is that my daughter?" she asked, trying to push past him.

"No," he said abruptly. "You don't have a daughter. You don't have any children--I have four...."

"Oh, come on, Marky. Just for old time's sake...."

"You had no good times with her! Or any of them!" he said.

"I have rights, you know, Darling," she said arrogantly.

"Talk to your solicitor, 'Darling,'" he said. "You haven't had any rights for about ten years. They don't know you. You're going to leave them alone, and I'm going to tell her you're a drugged up old weirdo, and that will be that."

"You don't have the guts," she sneered at him.  He paused, reeling in his temper, and he cast an eerie glance at her. She had no idea who he was now or what it was he did. She had no idea what he really was very, very capable of in order to protect his daughter.

"Don't push me," he whispered threateningly in her ear.  "You don't know that half of it. You come anywhere near my children, and I will kill you."

"You aren't enough of a man to do that," she laughed bitterly.

"Oh, do try me," he sneered. "Please do.  Do give me just one reason to be rid of you once and for all. Now I tell you what you're going to do. You're going to take your boy toy here and you're going to leave now. You're not coming back here, and you're not going to ever try to see my children."

"You can't stop me," she laughed. "You don't have the strength or the wand skills to chase off a Cornish pixy."

"And won't it be fun to find out?" he found himself unable to stop an amused smile, thinking of how strong and toned and muscular he had become in the years since, and how accurate his weapons skills were. She truly had no clue.

She looked at him and paused, studying him. He saw a sudden bit of fear in her eyes.

"You're scaring me, Marky," she said, becoming serious.

"Imagine that," he whispered. He turned her loose and shoved her towards the unbathed boy. "Now, get out of here. Both of you. And don't come back."

He saw her take a couple of stumbling steps, and he sidestepped in her direction to block any chance she might suddenly take to go try to make a run for Brooke.  He was immovable. She scowled at him, and he stood frozen. She craned to look past him to get another look at Brooke, and he spun her around and shoved her towards the door.  She angrily swatted at him and headed out.

He regained himself and headed back to Brooke, reaching for her again to hug her and reassure her.

"Impressive," his father said, pleased that the harpy had gone.

Its About Quality, Not Quantity Empty Re: Its About Quality, Not Quantity

Post by Brooke Belby Tue Jan 14, 2014 3:30 am

Brooke watched the scene unfold between her father and the weird screechy lady in the corner.  She couldn't make out what they were saying, but by the looks of it, her father didn't look to happy to see the lady.  Noticing the lady was trying to get a glance at her, she hid behind her grandfather in fear as he put a comforting hand on her head and brushed her hair comfortingly.  "It's ok Pussycat."said her grandfather softly as Brooke started shaking.  She didn't like fighting, she was against it at all cost and by the looks of it that what her father and the lady were doing.

As her father walked back over towards her and hugged her she hugged him back.  "Who was that crazy lady daddy, and what she want from you?"Brooke asked him in a shaky voice.  "How did she know my name daddy even though she called me Brookie."said Brooke shivering at how she said it.   There were only a few people who called her that, and it was her friends and family. The lady scared her, she didn't want to see that lady again that was for sure.

Although Brooke wasn't going to let that creepy lady get the best of her though, she was going to have a good weekend with her father.  Although she couldn't help not to wonder why that lady knew her name though.  She never seen that lady in her life, but she seemed to know Brooke very well though.

Her grandparents, father and brothers told her about her mother, how she was useless and did nothing but party, drink and waste her father's money on useless things.  She always left them alone,  she basically abused them by leaving them alone in the house with dirty diapers and etc.  Brooke didn't remember anything about her childhood before she raised by her grandparents, but her life afterwards was the greatest memories of her life.

People often teased her and picked on her due to her being raised by her grandparents but she didn't let it bother her.  They didn't know what her father did,  she admired her father although she only spent quality time with her.  Although she had no clue who her mother was, and to be honest she really didn't care to know either. For all she cared, her mother rot in hell for all she cared. She knew it sounded mean and cruel, but that was how she honestly felt about her.

Brooke was happy with the way her life was now, she didn't need her mother to come in and ruin it for her and her brothers. She seriously doubt her father would let her come anywhere near them though either. Brooke was relieved by that, he was a busy man, he didn't have time to worry about a twisted women like her.

Post by Marcus Belby Tue Jan 14, 2014 4:16 am

OOC: LOL--I have an image stuck in my head of Ben Kingsley as Marcus's father. hahaha

Brooke's questions were bound to come sooner or later. Marcus knew that. He knew he couldn't keep Evelyn a secret from her forever, but he hadn't been ready to sacrifice her innocence just yet. Not for such an utter wench like Evelyn. And not this weekend of all weekends.  And Brooke was entirely too smart not to figure out the obvious.

He glanced up from her to his father, who looked at him, unseen by Brooke. The look on Jonathan Belby's face was a silent question to his son.

"Okay, so you had the harpy under control," the look seemed to silently say. "You sure you got this, now, Tough Guy?"  It took Marcus a moment to regroup.  Then he looked back at Brooke as he tried to be a father again.

"She," he said, deciding to make light at first and tease her to try to get her to smile, "is an entirely different species. A vicious Harpy Mandrake, outlawed at Hogwarts for their relentless nagging and screaming." He grinned at her.  Then he kissed her cheek.

"She wants what she always wants," Jonathan calmly told his granddaughter, giving her a bit more credit than Marcus's immediate need to shelter his little girl would allow.  "She wants your father's money--and she got the same answer he always gives her."

"Her running into us today was simply coincidence," Marcus told Brooke. "She came here to buy illegal potions.  She wasn't always this way, you know. You got a lot of good things from her that you surely didn't get from me.

"She was beautiful and funny and smart and refreshingly spontaneous. She was creative and generous, and there was a time when I loved her.  You surely didn't get all that beauty and that grace and all those wonderful things from me.  I'm not sure exactly what you did get from me," he laughed, not considering himself handsome and feeling quite sure the little blond beauty that was his had not come from his genes. "But I'm sure glad I got you."

"She got the important things--her real beauty--from you," Jonathan said, wanting to ease them both a bit. "She got your quick wit, her fighting spirit, her sense of honesty and loyalty, and her wonderful heart. She is a pure Belby, through and through."  He brushed his granddaughter's hair. "The important thing for you to know, Brooke, is that she has no right whatsoever to any part of your life again ever if you don't want it.  Your father saw to that a long, long time ago. Your father will not share you with anyone. He loves you too much for that."

"I love you so much," Marcus said to her gently. "I would do anything for you and your brothers. Someday I will tell you the rest of the story, and someday you might choose to see her. Hopefully, she's not involved in illegal activities then. When that day comes, I won't stop you. But for now, until you know the whole story, let me do this. Let me protect you. All you need to know right now is that she's not good for you."

OOC: hehe LOL for some reason I can totally see that! Razz

"What if I don't want to ever know her?"Brooke asked them softly. "If she hasn't changed in the last twelve years, what makes you think she's going to change now?"Brooke asked them darkly. Talking about her mother always brought the anger out of Brooke and made her turn into 'Dark Brooke' a cold hearted little girl who could care less about her mother. "She had a chance to be my mother a long time ago, she left me and others for stupid shopping and stuff!"said Brooke angrily. "I don't want to see her again, I don't want to see her ever!" Brooke.

"I remember asking Zane and Kai why we didn't have a mother, they always told me stories of how she always left us and spent all daddy's money, so they were right."said Brooke.

"I don't see anything I gotten from her, I don't want to be like her at all!" said Brooke darkly crossing her arms. "I'm a Belby through and through like grandpa said, nothing will ever change that even if you say I'm like her some before she went all crazy!"said Brooke.

Brooked smiled. "I know he does grandpa, and I won't share him with anyone but my brothers."said Brooke. "Maybe."said Brooke chuckling. "I was kidding on that, of course I'll share them with you!"said Brooke. "Maybe over time daddy maybe you'll find that special someone again, I know she's out there for you."said Brooke softly. Brooke never had a real mother, it was something she wanted ever since she was little and she knew her father knew.

"I love you to daddy and you two grandpa, no matter how old I get, you two will always be my number one."said Brooke softly before hugging them. "You know daddy, I don't think I care to know the rest of the story, you told me enough for me not to like her."said Brooke. "Come on daddy, lets go have some fun and forget about her!"said Brooke softly. "That's why were here right?"Brooke asked him smiling.

"You don't have to know any more about her if you don't want," Marcus said reassuringly. "I just need that to be your choice and not mine. And you're stuck with my acting like a father for the rest of my life. That's just the way it is. But you're right. Let's waste no more time standing here talking about unpleasantness. We have a lot more important things to do this weekend."

"Just one thing," Jonathan said. "Would you like to tell me where you're going to be? Just in case?"

"I thought she might like the Bulgari," he told his father.

"You have expensive tastes," Jonathan said.

"No," Marcus said. "Its just a special weekend. Perhaps some shopping in Oxford Street for Brooke...."

"Do not let her bring back those eight mile high shoes," Jonathan scowled at his son.

"Jimmy Choo's?" he asked.

"Are those the ones? At 12, she does not need them, and you'd buy them if she batted her eyes at you."

"Do you really think I'm that big a pushover?"

"When it comes to your daughter, yes. I do," Jonathan said. Marcus flashed her an amused grin.

"We'll make a mental note, shall we?" he asked her, teasing. "No Jimmy Choos until next year." He reached for her hand. "Let's go."

"I mean it, Marc," Jonathan said sternly.

"Of course you do," Marcus replied. "So what shall it be, Brooke? Breakfast? Shopping? Tea? Sightseeing? or something else entirely?"

Brooke giggled at her grandfather's remark, even if his age, he still made her laugh at his funny fashion remarks. "Oh come on daddy, they have boots that don't have any heels on them and there really cute!"said Brooke softly. "But if you say no Jimmy Choo's then I won't get them, but can I get the sunglasses please daddy?"Brooke asked him softly. "Is that ok with you grandpa?"Brooke asked him softly giving him her famous puppy pout with the puppy eyes.

Brooke thought for a minute. "Hm... breakfast, then shopping, tea and then sightseeing?" Brooke asked her father softly. "That way way we can do everything this weekend!"said Brooke happily. Although Brooke didn't care what they did, she just glad to have the weekend with her father. Usually it was just one day with him, not the whole weekend. Brooke didn't know how to react to having her father all weekend, it was a bit of her shock to her but she knew they were able to do more together.

"You ready to go daddy?"Brooke asked him softly grabbing his hand. She didn't want to get lost in the crowded place of London again. That happened before, but luckily her grandfather was able to find her somehow. Her brothers told her that they have must have a tracking spell on them or their necklaces their father gave them has a spell on it to locate weather they were in danger and where they were. Brooke was starting to think they were right about it although their grandfather and father wouldn't admit it.
