As Tris stared out the window at the lake, she wondered what would happen if she went in it. The idea absolutely terrified her, but her curious nature still allowed her mind to wander. The first things that popped into her head were horrible monsters that would kill her, but the rational part of her brain told her that there was almost nothing to fear. Unfortunately, the rational part of her was very small.
Tris did however want to go outside. This far into Spring, there were very few days when it was not raining. The grass was still wet from yesterday's shower, but the sun was shining and fluffy white clouds covered the sky. She threw on her ankle boots, grabbed a book from her bag, and jogged out of the tower.
Tris avoided eye contact with others as she passed them in the hallways. She wasn't too terribly fond of the smile-at-eveyone-who-passes-you approach to navigating the school, and preferred to keep her distance. She reached the the entrance to the Grounds in 10 minutes, and slowed to a walk. She watched the lake warily, making sure to keep a safe distance. She sat down against a near-by tree, and opened her book to the page she had folded down. The occasional droplet of water brushed her skin, but she soon forgot about them as she became absorbed in her book.
