Hogwarts Houses and Applications

Hello Everyone,
In the character application it clearly states, that unless your character is a canon, you need to state two houses that you would like your character to be in, and then we'll choose which one is most appropriate based on your character.

I just looked through about the first 20 or so apps, and about 4/5 only stated one choice of house, the sample excluded canons, by the way. And in a lot of cases, characters aren't suiting their description, people are just choosing the house they think is the best.

As such, here is a new, little rule.

If you only list one house preference for an original character, I can promise you that that house will be the one it's excluded from, with no second glance.

So, if you just write in another house, then all will be good, but if you're lazy and leave the 15 keystrokes out, you'll be in all sorts of trouble.

Just FYI for anyone who reads this, whenever I do an app, I do take in the writer's preference for house. But how they have designed their character is far more important to me and what house that character fits into is not always the same house they ask for.

If someone wants to be a Ravenclaw, but their character is really a Hufflepuff by personality, I'm going to make them a Hufflepuff.

If someone really has a strong perference, they generally indicate that to me and we work with it on a case by case basis. But in general, it is far more difficult to, for example, design someone who is specifically a Hufflepuff or fits specifically into one house or another. It is really approaching the creative process entirely backwards and I do not recommend it. It does not create the strongest of characters, and most of the time, when players do that, they end up with "cookie cutter" characters.

Personally, I encourage players to develop their characters as completely as they can and let the "Sorting Hat" do its job. LOL
