Khaat had started to get warm again as they talked, and that was making sleep hammer at her brain again. Abbey seemed comforted by both the beautiful Christmas lights and by being in Khaat's arms. The tiny girl curled into her, laid her head down on Khaat's chest and closed her eyes, cudddling into her mother.
"Chase," Khaat smiled, "That's the best strategy for dealing with them I've heard in a long time. And since Brian takes his job so seriously, all is well." She started to slip into sleep and then woke again, well, sort of. "You know, you're already part of the family. You really don't have to work at it. You just have to accept it. That's all it takes. It really is that easy." She slipped back into sleep again.
Brian looked at Chase. "That, my dear, is the look of trust. It means she is relieved and feels safe here with us. I'm just going to let her sleep. I'll take her up to her room later this morning. It looks like Abbey has decided to stay with Mom for awhile. And that? Well, that's just a nice, full tummy. Thank you. That helped for Khaat to be able to see Abbey right away--that was all that relief we just saw. That was the best thing that could have happened today. I was about ready to take the risk to take Abbey to her, but this is so much better for both of them. How'd you get out of having to feed Dakota too? They're usually on about the same schedule. You either have a magic touch or you were just plain lucky." He laughed. "Oh, don't let me forget. Robert prepared all Khaat's care instructions and wrote them out and sent a whole bag of supplies. I'll go over them with you at a more humane hour. Robert would not have begun to even consider releasing her yet if there really was another choice. So, we still need to deal with that. And i am quite positive Robert will be in and out.
"You're welcome to go back to bed if you like I'll be up now. And Angus should be up any minute. It really is very early." At that moment, he heard the distinct sounds of Dakota waking and fussing, but it only lasted a moment. Brian frowned. That was definately not the character of the little redhead. He started to take some rather quick steps towards going upstairs when he heard Angus's voice. He was talking to somene as he approached. An instant later, he walked into the room, carrying Dakota, who had stopped her fussing and was giggling. Angus was tickling her gently, and the fussing had stopped.
"So that's why the fussing stopped," Brian said in a hushed tone so he didn't wake Khaat, visibly relieved.
"You worry..." Angus began.
"Shh," Brian hushed him, pointing to Khaat on the sofa. Angus's frown became deep and severe. He walked over to Brian.
"What the hell..." he began.
"New from Paris during the night. Gelding and Burke are moving again."
"Retaliation," Angus sighed. "Does Robert know?'
"Of course. I'm sure he'll be around sometime this morning."
"She looks like hell," Angus sighed.
"She looks better than she did a couple days ago. Much. I'm letting her sleep for now, and I'll help her upstairs later."
"She may well be better off with her family for now than to be shut up alone in her room anywa," Angus said. "It would be healthier for her. Alright. Chase, can I ask you to please feed Dakota while I go take care of the stables? I'll make some fresh coffee and tea before I go outside."
"
